Don't be that guy!
I would suggest getting an entry level All Mountain bike such as a Specialized Enduro or Santacruz Nomad. Look for a minimum of 5 in of travel and you won't regret it. MTB is similar to moto where once you get into it you will seek out more and more challenging terrain to conquer and once get hooked you are hooked!
i picked up a Specialized Stumpjumper 29er last year, i'm not a hardcore mtbr like some of the dudes that have posted in here. i usually do a ride of 8-14 miles with 1000-2000 ft. elevation. the Camber style bike is not quite what i would consider perfect for my style of riding because of the technicality of the hills. for you, paved and some dirt, the Camber would be perfect in my opinion. you still get great components, full suspension for a comfortable ride, but not too overboard. as Visser said, a hardtail with front suspension would also be a great buy. just remember to buy some clipless pedals and shoes too for the best results.
the beauty of mtn bikes is that there is literally a perfect blend of technology versus price for everyone out there. pick your brand and there are literally 10-20 bikes to choose from.
Road
-Do enough of it and your legs can become as strong as tree trunks
-Excellent for endurance training (aka, long motos become much easier)
-You can do it just about anywhere
MTB
-Far better for getting your heart rate up (for the first 15 minutes of a moto)
-Like off-road riding, it teaches you to adapt while still maintaing good line selection
-Full body workout
If you have a chance to ride friends' bikes, do it. You'll find that one bike will fit you better than another. Then you'll know what to watch for on CL.
Have fun!
In Utah most (not all) cross country mountain bikers consider themselves environmentalists...and fight to keep Dirt bikes out.
i consider myself an all mountain rider... a few weeks ago i was riding my usual trail, minding my business. it was a nice warm day so it was pretty crowded with bikers and hikers. i'm the kind of person where if i'm going up or down i will usually yield to oncoming traffic as to not cause any problems. well towards the end of my ride i'm going up a tough climb and i usually have to stop halfway to breathe before continuing. i was feeling good so i kept at it. a group of 3 douchebag XC guys come around the corner in their full spandex and are clearly not slowing down to yield to me, the uphill rider. i take my sweet ass time slowing down and slowly getting up on the side-hill to let them by. as the first one comes by he doesn't say anything and i blurt out "any fuckin' time dick" and the 2nd guy goes by and the third guy stops and apologizes for his buddies. he say's they're always doing this and he usually leads the group to avoid this type of deal. some people are just assholes.
downhill guys and all-mountain guys are pretty rad for the most part. it's been the XC guys that i for the most part could do without on my local trails. that said i talked to a cute XC chick on the trail a few rides ago and ended up going for drinks after. she looked better in her mtb garb and spandex than she did "ready to go out"
On a funny note, I'm better on the MTB then my 13 year old son who is just getting faster then me on his supermini. So I got to talk thrast to him all the way home. Ha ha ha ha I'm sure it will not last long but I'm enjoying it while it last.
Also, I agree with peelout's mtb suggestions. Go with a 120mm travel trail (29er) bike, good all-around bike.
While this one is only a 100mm bike, it does everything I ask of it.

I Bought my 2012 Spec. Enduro Comp at 2300 and with anything you get what you pay for and I would consider that entry level for the type equipment that is speced on it. I have followed suit when I made the jump to a full DH rig with Spec Demo 8ii... you can see it in my avatar pic behind my KX250. I still have both my Enduro and DH bike and as soon as the snow melts here in Northern Nevada I will start using my Enduro through the winter waiting for NorthStar to open in the spring so I can hit the mountain.... I cant wait!
And I agree with Peely.... Spandex wearing XC and Hikers are all a bunch of snobbish A-Holes!
In case some of you haven't noticed every type of activity has its share of good and bad people, all sports are what you make of them, I enjoy all of them and have great friends in all sports
I'm very luck as I can ride trails from my house or drive 5 minutes away and have 100++miles or so of awesome XC/downhill trails. It's difficult now with the snow but during the summer it's great to go pedal for an hour or two after work. Improves everything from form, line choice and of course fitness. It's great.
