So I crashed almost a month ago my injury is broken clavical, scapula and 8 ribs all to my left side also contusion to lung and nerve numbness to my chest having a tons of nerve like pain ( burning, tingling, sensitive, very painful when I move like sand paper on my skin) this is all from my mid chest to around my arm pit area. the fractures seem to be healing fine but nerve stuff seems worse. Have any of you had anything like this and have any info that would be helpful?
Thanks Dustin

nerve damage can take up to 2 years to get better. emg test can tell you how bad it is. they do have meds to dull nerve sensation. good luck

Yes. Some in my lower back. It takes much longer to heal than the bones, if it ever does. Mine goes through cycles where it flares up. Keeping the affected area exercised and loose helps. If I sit at a desk or in a car for a long time, it's not good.

If you haven't talked to your doctor or a physical therapist, maybe even a neurologist, about it, you should.

Just expect it to take a while, and be persistent with whatever course of therapy you're given.

I've had nerve pain on the bottom of my foot after my initial ankle injury and it comes back after each surgery - and in my case it always goes away.

It takes a while for that stuff to calm back down, like several months, but my tingling and pain did eventually go away.

There are over-the-counter painkillers that you can rub on the affected area. It definitely helps.

My father had a pinched nerve in his back for like 2 years. Caused immense pain shooting down his arm into his bottom 2 fingers. Spent tons of cash on doctors and MRI's and all that and nothing helped at all. Except one he day he went to the biokineticist at the gym and he spent an hour with my dad and then gave him a workout plan and loosen the muscle on his back and then within a few months everything was fine which is weird because he has been in the gym his whole life. But i guess thats why biokineticists cost so much money, because they know their shit. Except now, 6 years later, he still has a constant numbness in his left little finger.

You need to see a specialist. An EMG is a test designed to determine the activity of a nerve or nerves. Your ortho should have no problem finding you a specialist that can handle this. Nerves take up to 2 years to heal and at times they do not heal to be 100%. The EMG will determine the activity of your issue and will help identify what the next step will be. Nerve transfer surgery is available but very difficult and takes a specialist to perform it.

I crashed in 2007 and broke my humerous, scapula, and anterially dislocated my shoulder causing damage to my axullary nerve in my deltoid. It took a month of healing followed by about 6 months of physical therapy to realize that I had damaged more than just bones in my shoulder. I saw a shoulder specialist that reffered me to a Neurosurgeon/Plastic specialist to have a nerve transfer procedure. The doctor took two nerves from my tricep and graphed them into my deltoid. I then followed that with more rest and physical therapy. My shoulder has improved tremendously but it is still not 100% and never will be.

All of this was available to me due to being young and covered by my fathers very good insurance. I recommend that you discuss this with your ortho and get a recommendation to a specialist.

Mine was Dr. Susan Mackinnon from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo.

i had a fractured rib that never healed properly. it bothered me for years and got progressively worse. eventually the fracture would kind of pop like a knuckle and be very painful. eventually i went to the doctor and the xray showed a tumor had developed around the initial fracture and i had to have immediate surgery for fear of cancer. they removed that rib and another one above it and shortened one of my floating ribs. the tumor was cancerous, a chondrosarcoma, and when they removed all that bone they took a lot of muscle and sections of the major nerves that run along the inside of your ribs. so i have two sections of nerves missing and i suffer from chronic nerve damage and always will.

i have an addictive personality and i don't do well with pills. i have been living and riding with this issue for ten years now (cancer free!) and the only thing that really helps me is stretching and yoga. a lot of people will trash on yoga but to be honest it is the best thing for my nerve damage. whenever i get all itchy, deep throbbing pain or the sharp needle poking pain from the chronic nerve damage i do a lot of stretching and yoga and it helps.

this post wasn't to scare you, i've broken over 12 bones, 4 of them being ribs, and only one fracture turned into a freak issue. good luck with your injury and give yoga a try. focus on the breathing and torso areas of yoga and it should help.

dustinb333 , im 36 raced moto my whole life, one day I woke up and and had electric current (nerve pain) going down my arm to my fingers acrossed my chest n back, it was unbearable! I got an mri and found out I had disc herniatiions in my neck c1 threw c 7. no big crashes or anything I can think of that did it. I ended up getting a epidural in my neck. relieved the pain for about 4 yrs! this past summer, it came back, went for the epidural, this time no help, got a second one, no help, couldn't take the pain and was refered to 2 of the most recommended surgerions in my are( ny /nj has the best surgions in the country imo) one recommended surgery the other recommended me to try his friend who is a chiropractor/ accupunterist. long story short, its been about 7weeks with no pain or symptom! I do chiro n accu 3 times a week. had to change my diet and trying to loose wait, 1 day at a time, but anything is better than that pain, and surgery! p.s. pain meds don't work, and is not the answer

Thanks for all the info. I'm going for an MRI tonight they think I might have a herniated disc by my scapula. My scapula broke down the middle and I broke two ribs behind it that attach to my spine. They keep going back to that saying it has to be the problem. I been racing my whole life turned pro at 17 and now at almost 40 I crash my worst one yet. Go figure!!

This one is making me want to quit but I love moto so much it's killing me just thinking about stopping..

Mines the same way D, it was 9 weeks ago Sunday and I still have no feeling to the touch in my shoulder and tricep muscle.

The burning pains stopped around the 7-8 week mark, but I almost went back for an MRI because the burning went from my shoulder up through my neck.

I crushed my leg in a crash in 2010, which broke my L fibula. The fib healed fine and I was out of the boot in a matter of weeks, but the nerve issues lasted months. It wasn't so much that the pain was unbearable, but I really felt like I had limited muscle control & the unnerving feeling of shocks whenever my was impacted (like jogging). It took a while, but it fully healed and is no longer an issue. No real rehab for it... just using it daily as needed and being patient.

Had a similar operation, I don't remember the specifics since I was only 11 when it was done. But I do believe Dr. Mackinnon did my operation as well. Shoulder definitely is not 100%, but there is nothing that can really fix it correctly.

I crashed in 1989 and landed on the side of my left hip three times as I bounced along the hard pan. Take the advice of others to see a specialist. I didn't; now, 24 years later, my hip is still numb. Doesn't hurt but there is no feeling at all in the area I landed on.

X 2 on the yoga. My daughter turned me on to it after being in a chair for 19 months. It really helped with my recovery after my big get off. It helps with my nerve pain and i believe it helped with my phantom pains as well. Stretching is vastly underrated in injury prevention and healing imo. Hope your mri helps you get it figured out. Good luck with your recovery.
