Completely sweet machine. Can you imagine how fun this bike would be on a regular MX course. The Carbon Fiber would probably crack after 1 moto, but it would be a blast until that happened.

How do you figure the carbon fiber would crack after 1 moto? Are you high?

That 787 Boeing has caught on fire, had exterior panels come off in flight and who knows what else but it still hasn't cracked open. It might be just fine. There are quite a few ideas I've had about dirt bikes that seem to be on that bike. Parts that serve double duty and everything else that has been simplified and minimized. I like it. I would have made the silencer serviceable and as part of the airbox/subframe/seatbase. Rear suspension would have been air too.

It would be cool if it didn't. You remember that super light CR125 some years back that was all carbon fiber? The fenders and number plates started chipping on the first couple of rides.

If I remember correctly they tested it for a magazine at Red Bud and it was muddy. As soon as some mud built up under the fenders the added weight caused them to snap off. First ride.

I think if there were problems it would be from impacts, steel against the cf.

Yeah, I would think that would happen here in a full on MX moto. I couldn't see carbon fiber holding up, especially the shock mounts and swingarm.

Cf can be as strong or weak as you'd like; that's not the problem. The issue is it being brittle, and "shearing" forces that go against the way it's laid up. The only problem is the one they're having in bicycles; it just isn't durable. All it'll take is 1 time hitting the dirt or a rock, and that frame will have holes in it. FMX guys are known to hit the ground, and when they do, it's VERY, very hard. Mix in brittle carbon fibre, and it'll be a catastrophe.

I wonder what the deal with the silencer is....

Give it ten years. Those pieces of shit are gonna be hitting the ground like lawn darts.

at least they didn't scrap the entire look of a light badass machine by throwing a farm-tractor-turd motor in it

I am pretty sure that it would survive a real race. I mean, it was built to be a very light FMX bike. if it would crack after a small jump, they would not present it to the media. It has a KTm enige, frame probably even build by ktm too

250 I'm guessing. Either way, it'd be fun to throw it around a little.

Comparing the two is funny. Any one part on the 787 has more engineering than that whole bike.

Carbon fibre just isnt the material for this , is has zero compliance and first crash , the subframe will be toast..

Sure it will be light ,but its a about a crash proof as a goldfish bowl .

And MX would kill it , any application where high shock loads are the norm will render it useless in no time , and without the correct kit to crack test it , you have no way of knowing if its cracking or not.

Looks cool though

Ever had a carbon fiber 4-stroke exhaust? They don't last long. Works pretty good for the hood on my Bimmer though.

Yeah , that's why they build so much of a F1 car out of carbon fiber, because it wont hold up.Woohoo

What is the purpose of routing the front brake line on the outside of the fork leg?

I guess. It would be cool if it would. It would be cool even if the frame and swingarm was alum and everything else was carbon fiber, with the weight around 180 lbs.

Are they gonna get an fmx rider to do a demo or at least a few jumps on that thing? Or is it just a useless ornament?

They've been using CF subframes in the GP's for years.

have you seen an F1 or Indy car shatter when it hits something ,,,, the aluminium honeycomb composite frame will be fine but all the rest will shatter like a light bulb.... i have worked in F1 , and i have thrown more carbon fibre parts away than you can ever believe.. and thats stuff that LOOKS fine but fails Eddy current tests.

last time i looked , F1 cars didnt have to jump 40Ft in the air..

MX subframes out of carbon fibre is daft too , same as fuel tanks , Dean Ferris had a small crash in front of us at the GP and split his carbon tank .... i have never ever seen a plastic tank fail.

Last time I checked MX bikes didn't go 190 mph and bounce off curbs on hard pavement.you can't really compare the two as they do completely different things. You can make carbon fiber as flexible or as ridged as you need it to be but now cost is a whole different story. F1 cars are made to shatter and dissipate the force of the crash that is why they shatter. Lightspeed makes tons of cool carbon fiber and I have never had anything split or shatter not even a glide plate. Now as that free style bike is concerned I think that is more show than go as I doubt any of the carbon fiber on that bike is worth doing , but it does look cool.

MotoGP teams don't use carbon fiber wheels because they were collapsing at speed....something to do with harmonic vibrations.
