Just look at the crowds back in 1980 when the Motocross des Nations was held at Farleigh!

My old man was a Mod in the 60's and used to ride his scooter to Farleigh to watch the likes of Jeff Smith, Vic Eastwood, Dave Bickers, Arthur Lampkin etc.

He tells a funny story of when him and his friends were arriving through the top entrance by the farm one year and his mate slid off right in front of a group of Rockers (the arch rivals at the time). Put scrapes all down the side of his immaculate Lambretta TV200 Smile

Now that I'm home looking at these pics on a PC instead of a fucking I Phone, that looks awesome. The English countryside. 2 thumbs up. I've got relatives in Blackpool I haven't seen since the late 70's, a coincidental visit about this time of year would work nicely. Silly Then again, I was supposed to meet up with DrSweden for the MXDN this year. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

That's how you get the result from last years MXdeN.

LOVE Namur!!!

Damn shame it will likely never see another GP but I've often wondered what Red Bull could do there with a downhill mountain bike competition. I'm saying the course would blow people's mind! I will be the first to say it needs to happen since dirtbikes won't ever be seen there again & the fact Red Bull downhill is the next best thing to MX/SX. Let's make this happen, Namur needs to be more thana tourist site with its racing history.

Been trying for three months to get a price and a print of that from Roddy McCleod. Wanting that to be the focal point at the top of my stairs in the man cave. Starting to get a bit depressed.Sad

Hell 3 months & no response basically means its ok haha. Right click, save to a usb flash stick and with a trip to staples, boom problem solved. Just joking and hope you're able to find a solution to your depression soon.

Newmann what do you of the idea of a Red Bull downhill mtn bike race @ Namur?

The first 5 pics are the steps that run parallel to the road by the castle , the last is the veranda in the trees after the big downhill. First pic is Malherbe at the 1980 MXDN. The others G.P's over the years.

I visited this place when they had the MXoN at Matterley Basin.

it was an excellent experience, no race was going on, We walked the ledges and what we could tell of the track, it's almost like the feeling you get when you Visit Arlington in DC.

Also the Pub near the Castle , the side walk is only a few feet wide then the road. You could have a pint and take one step out the door and get ran over , LOL

Thats cool that you took the time to visit. Such a sleepy little place eh!

Most people who happen drive through or visit the castle on a Sunday afternoon wouldn't have a clue that the surrounding fields have hosted some of the most significant events in our sports history. You're right, there is a strange feeling about the place when you know it's background.

Pumped. Heading off for the weekend in a couple of hours.

More track prep photos:

That'll be the beer tent then.....

Last year:

Mr Thorpe senior with David's '89 RC.
Same start gate as was used for GPs across several decades.

Very short but sweet video: (Embedding disabled sorry)

http://youtu.be/YeMEnkCf5sQ

Check out at 20 seconds. Noyce actually pops a little double jump. That's early....

And right at the end there is a good view of how gnarly the downhill steps used to be.

Top to Bottom :
André Malherbe, André again (both times #5)
Gerard Rond (I guess #6)
Graham Noyce of course (#4)
Not sure of this one (Suzuki #2)... looks like a Brit'... Steve Beamish ??
Bottom : "Rolls" Noyce again... superb style, partied as hard as he was riding, active vintage rider too nowadays !

But, sorry to our British friends....
the French Team of World Champions (JMB, Demaria, Vimond, Bolley) is just going to kill it this week-end at Farleigh.

It looks like the Event may gather much more spectators than the recent GP in Matterley (which is also a great MX track BTW)...
How ironic if this happens !
