I thought the guys here were saying the problem riding the smoker vs. the thumpers was supposed to be in the mud? Wink
Smoker or thumper, mud races bring about mayhem and sometimes staying upright is more important than pure speed. In that race there were some big names that got bitten by the mud and finished way back if at all. This is not to diminish his 9th place in the least. It's just there are other factors involved in motocross other than the configuration of a particular motor.

I think he will remain in or around the top 10 even when it dries out. He's obviously fit.

Yep. My comment was just a jab. Conditions didn't matter a whole lot to RC when he was riding the 250 and the other top riders progressed to the 200cc advantaged 4-strokes. Sure, a tweaked 250 smoker trying to get every fraction of hp out of it will do better in some conditions than others, but that's true of every bike. If a rider's smart, in great shape, and is patient, he can win on a lot of bikes.

It is funny how competitive Robbins is on a bike he's had so little time riding (that's what shocks me the most...not how old the bike is), against guys who have trained on, and are riding, the latest and greatest. Heck, the biggest disadvantage I see about the bike he's riding are the brakes. Thank god the front's at least a disc!

So many things are impressive with the '85 and Robins' crew. It's impressive they have been able to keep the bike together all year. It's impressive they've been able to set it up to work well on today's tracks. It's impressive he's been able to haul the mail on it. What seems most impressive to me, and this is what will take him a long way in mx, is his ability to go fast on what he's been given. No matter what that is. To step off a 28 year old geometry bike and onto a current bike, '85 brakes to '07 brakes, all of these things, added to riding in the mud tell me the kid can flat out ride. He doesn't seem to care what is under him, he's going to ring it's neck and get all he can out of it.

Good job Jerry and keep on keeping on.

yeah, i'm thinking theres a few guys that would give him fits... but 90% of the vitards seems awful low.

closer to 98% i would bet. he would smoke me.

start throwing the cost of the bikes around also and he'd really make a lot of people here look stupid

I couldn't beat him on any motorcycle ever made. I'm also amazed at his ability to adapt so quickly to the different ergos and handling traits between the two bikes.

I bet that a bunch of mini Dad's are rethinking their Kid's need for the latest bike or aftermarket part right about now.

Holy crap - that's a wicked move at 0:43 for Jerry to avoid a downed rider! Kid has skills. I would have been over the bars.

Nice ride, from last or nearly last all the way to 5th. Would have been nice if he could have gotten the 4th but with a 5th, he still has a shot at the overall.

I'm guessing there was a first turn or early lap 1 crash?

His lap times were a few seconds faster than 2,3,4
Its my understanding that the motos were shortened by 5 minutes today.
If that's the case he really could have used the extra 5 minutes.

Yea, I noticed it was only 8 lap race..... He could have gotten 4th I think. Even with another 2 laps, 3rd+ was out of reach I think. They were like 20+ seconds ahead.
