Ryan Dungey is a class act...fact. On the bike he may be a tick off Ryan Villopoto but it's a VERY small tick. As far as putting a chain back on...in the old days of floppy chains and wimpy to non-existent chain guards it was pretty easy...on todays bikes if you toss a chain it usually means some new parts or at least a pry bar to get things right. I'd say he got real lucky....which I've heard is better than being good at times.

I was going to start a thread- "when was the last time you threw/de-railed a chain".... My last time- hard to remember but I would guess 93'... And I am a massive slacker and rarely work on my bike..

Yes impressive dungey got it back on... The bigger deal to me is- in this day and age, how in the world did it come off to begin with..?? Yet another mysterious ktm problem?

Dungey has very seldom been the fastest, most aggressive guy in any moto...but he has two things going for him: consistency & the ability to stay calm and focused when faced with adversity. A lot of guys would've thrown the bike down in disgust and stomped off over a derailed chain...RD didn't. He salvaged maximum points.

Ryan Dungey IS a badass!

Is there video of this? From what I saw, his chain got jammed with a rock and didn't come off?

It's not so much that he was able to get the chain on again.

He has huge stones of steel to ride it like he did after that happened. He had to have been expecting it to come off again at any time - they usually don't go back on that easy without there being increased risk of it coming back off. If that thing had derailed again at the wrong time it would have been a world of hurt.

That's bad ass! Has anyone else ever stopped during a moto, out their chain back on, then kept charging to still beat their main rival?

EVERY SINGLE YEAR, win the title or not, The Dunge always does something completely awesome!!! Cool

Gimme a fucking break, Bob. How many times have you put your chain back on? Trust me, folks, it's about a twenty second fix. BFD, he put his chain back on! LOL!

Wow we have a bunch of haters on here. If your chain derailed, would you feel comfortable putting it back on and hitting huge jumps and whoop sections with faith that it wouldn't derail again at a worse part of the track? It takes balls to do what he did.

I think there's going to be a natural difference in reaction based on generation. For those of us from the generation when the countershaft was closer to the front axle than the swingarm pivot and chains got tossed all the time, especially once people were cutting frames for long travel mode, losing a chain and popping it on was pretty routine.

On the other hand, I see the point about hanging it out on a modern bike when chains usually get lost because something is an issue. But I'd be willing to bet that RV and any of the others would do the same thing; well (I guess Reed didn't that one year at Red Bud).

I was leading a moto the only time I had a chain derail. I put it back on and raced until it derailed again. That was 1982, and knowing then what I know know, I would be very afraid of hitting any modern jump in that situation.

Funny...

I remember when he was 16 & gettin' all shy & embarrassed by the presence of the Rockstar girls back in the day.

Now, he's a man making the sport of Moticross look good.

Am I missing something here or is it really that big of a deal to put your chain back on? Im serious because i know i can do that shit in my sleep are these riders really that inept at working on a bike? If they are they should be forced to learn some basics I dont give him props for that thats some shit he should have learned to do on his own when he was on 60's
You can "do that shit in your sleep", sure, but have you ever been fighting for a National Championship, AHEAD of your main rival in the moto, heart rate is high, lots of adrenalin, and you throw your chain? You'd be cool as can be and put it back on, cause you can "do that shit in your sleep"?

Gimmie a frickin break, jmb, your post is bullshit. You have a to LEAST give the guy a little props and respect for what he did, considering his situation. Stop being a douche.
