Red Bull KTM Signs Mike Brown for WORCS Series
- press release -

Murrieta, CA – The Red Bull KTM Factory WORCS Team is proud to announce its newest rider, Mike Brown.

Brown, the former 125cc Supercross Champion and British 125cc Motocross Champion, has signed a one-year contract with the factory team. Brown will race the series aboard the KTM 450 XC race machine. “We are fortunate to bring a rider with Brown’s experience to the WORCS Series and are looking forward to many top finishes in the coming season,” commented KTM’s Director of Racing Kurt Nicoll.

“I feel that the WORCS Series is a challenging Series that fits my riding skills well. I look forward to competing in this series against old and new rivals,” commented Brown. He continued, “The KTM 450 XC is a great bike and I believe it will hold up well on the off-road sections while also providing more than enough power on the motocross portion of the course.”

Brown will warm up for the 2009 series by competing in the eighth round of the current 2008 WORCS Series scheduled for August 30, 2008 in Monticello, UT. He is then set to compete the entire 2009 race season. Brown will be joined by teammate, Justin Soulè, who will be returning for his third year as a member of the Red Bull KTM Team.

I'd say the 200XC would suit Brownie's riding style better, but I smell a Championship plate nonetheless.

Do not care if Mike Brown decides to ride the little motorcyles at the fair that turn around the carousel. WORCS racing is not exactly off road it is fairly open if he wins I will not care, if he looses I will not care. Either way Mike has enjoyed a long time in the sport. I just get irritated when riders during interviews lie to themselves and to his or her fans about the potential success of the upcoming season. Mike should have been more realistic about his chances in the AMA nationals so any talk about how much of a contender he will be is just hype so I really do not care much for what he does, but if he were to admit he is ready to retire or to take it easy and race for fun (like other dignified professionals who retire do) I would have a higher level of respect for him.

We'll see, won't we?

I think Brownie is far from washed up.

Right a 200XC will hang with 450's especially in the wide open WORCS series. Uh huh, sure. He will probably be on a 450. Hey maybe KTM can dust off one of Alessi's old 125's, hahaha. and I think what you smell is not a championship it is just a side affect of hitting the bong.

Didn't Brown win the 3 hour moto at Day in the Dirt one time? I'll bet he'll do real well.

Tell that to Shane Watts, Crackhead. Brown's strengths have never been with the big-bores.

That's weird, I thought Brown won the Japanese round of the MX1 World Championship last year. Seems to me like he goes pretty well on a 450.

Pretty well on a 450, yeah, but my point was that Brown has always been a small-bore specialist, OK? You don't agree? That's fine.

Watts did well in GNCC regardless of bike size and won championships on all of them. That was my second point.

WORCS is not GNCC. That should suit Brown even more.

Agumentative this morning?

You people are a bit misguided. The races Shane Watts won on a small bore were a different type of racing and Shane is a different type of rider. The GNCC's are a bit different from the WORCS series and when Juha Salminen raced a WORCS series race he said he should have brought a 450 because the 250 was a tad too slow. Hense Caselli raced it on a 300 not a 250 and certainly not a 200. The game of off-road is changing: gone are the days of good old fashion harescrambles that required nimble light weight machines, instead the courses are a bit more open than in the past and the WORCS is one of the most open. The riders only use brush guards and not Bark busters because the series is not that tight. I do not care if he were the best rider on earth on a small bore a 125 or a 200 in the woods during a WORCS race will not be competative and if you ask shane Watts who actually switched to a 250 yamaha for a while before he started doing riding schools full time back on the 200. I have raced against (well one row behind him) on the same track as shane watts and can tell you back when he won most of his races the tracks were different the other riders were different and intensity was different.

I understand what you are saying I am just pointing out the fact that on a motocross track a great 125 rider is not going to hang with really good 450 rider and the WORCS series is pretty quick. If you think a 125 can hang, you are not being realistic. Much of the WORCS is top speed and the top speed of a 125 is not fast enough, there were guys who used to be 125 specialists at the GNCC's and when the tracks got faster they were forced to switch to a bigger bore to be competative.

Terry,

Mike Brown certainly has the potential to do fine but he won't win a Championship. Good news is we only have to wait 10 days to see what he's got. People keep under estimating what it takes to win in the WORCS. Its 2 and half hours of a near National MX pace. He'd better be in shape because you can't mail in the last hour and half anymore.

Small bore specialist or not I seriously doubt he'll ride anything but the 450 in WORCS. Not that I agree with plan but it is the reality.

I never suggested a 125. I merely said the 200 would suit him well based on his apparent (to me) preference for smaller bore two-strokes. My bad. Is wasn't a well-thought out response. Just an off the cuff comment. Excuse me.

I don't think anyone has ever questioned Brown's conditioning. I doubt that will be an issue.

Brown, will be riding a KTM 450 XC...A very capable off-road machine.

His last appearance in the states on a 450, was at the 2007 Motocross national @ Glen Helen...where he netted a 7th overall. (via a 6-7 moto score)

He has been in the 125/250F class, simply because that is where he got his deal.

Mike Brown, will do great in the W.O.R.C.S races...he will probably have a learning curve to overcome, but I foresee a win, or two.

I agree as would anyone that he is a small bore specialist, but that does not mean that a small bore (200) would be competative in the WORCS series where a 250 2 stroke is barely competative against the 450's.

i find it odd KTM lists his accomplushments as a AMA 125 supercross championb, and a british mx champiion,
but without mentioning he is a formar AMA national motocross champion (2001? )

(yes grant broke a wheel, but mike took 1-1 and the title , and was hauling that day at steel city)

His biggest racing accomplishment ,so seems odd not to list it in the resume' ..

perhaps from the irony that grants was on ktm red bull ? in 2001,
and lost the title to brown?

Great.......... With how much Brown likes to complain about his bikes & blame his results on the bikes - I think it's a bad move for KTM when they're still working to establish themselves as one of the Big 5.
