FMFand Ottow's Werx had a trick air fork system back in 1976. They lengthened the lower fork tubes and dampener rods to get more travel without raising the front of the bike too much. Added air caps and a trick set of pressurized sub tanks. Very trick stuff from back in the day.....Uncle Donnie and his Flying Machine Factory was like that though.

I don't think there there is going to be issues - but anything can happen. KYB and the OEM's have spent over a year testing and putting hundreds and hundreds of hours on the fork at a track and on a dyno before they even considered running them on a production bike.

People forget that forks have been air forks FOREVER. All forks even with springs use the air inside the chamber to tune and regulate the performance. Spring fork: raise the oil high to increase the air spring effect toward the last 25% of the stroke for bottoming control. Take oil out to make the fork a little more plush at the final 25% of the stroke.

The photo of the guy that had an issue on one leg: It looked like a full mud race and he also could have got a huge rock ding to compromise the seal. But remember fork springs and dampers can also break and cause a fork to collapse—I have seen it. I have seen shock springs break. I have seen shocks come apart. I have seen linkage break. I have seen linkage frame brackets break welds and the entire rear end collapses. I have seen triple clamps bust in half. Image it and it has probably happened.

Anything is possible with our without a spring. But it has not been since the 80s that I have seen two fork seals both have Catastrophic issues and blow oil all over the place. If that was the case you might be in a world of hurt. And if you have and issue it will start to happen over time not from one jump to the next. If a fork leg starts to drop pressure you will feel it very fast and pull over. The difference between say 32lb starting pressure and 35lb is huge in my experience. If the pressure started to drop most riders should be able to feel something is wrong long before that is a major issue.

Maybe an SFF fork with a combo air pressured fork and a very light spring for assistance on one side. This way the scared will always feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing there is a spring to hold up something in the event someone shoots two holes in both fork legs right as you are hitting the face of a 90-foot triple.

Just saying - The big whine is all for not!

If you keep bitching about technology they might bring back the Z Spoke, Bass rear brake, conventional 43mm forks, radiators mounted on the fork, drum brakes, air cooling, OEM steel handelbar, mud flaps, 23-inch front wheels, and the min weight on a motocross bike will be 285lbs and the Gov will require it to be street legal.

Wow, Guy B jsut posted a pic of Villopoto's bike for MEC and it has Showa SFF Air Forks. Very interesting so maybe there is an issue with the KYB air forks. Although these Showa's that he is running are way different than what come on the 2013 Honda as well. Regardless they are still air for RV2 so can you imagine with a million on the line and he has a seal leak and boom he is done. Although I would guess these forks have a dual chamber of some sort to prevent this.

The 2013 Honda 450 has KYB air forks, not Showa.

The factory Honda 450's have been running Showa the whole time even though they've came stock with KYB since 09.

The factories don't run the same suspension brands as the production bikes always. Pretty normal.

I doubt this is any help at all, but I'm going out on a limb. My Fox mountain bike air fork leaked a little after a recent rebuild. I tightened the thingy with the air valve on it a little more into the fork leg and it solved the problem. I guess a little air was leaking through the threads. From the fork rebuild guide newman posted it seems like a similar design as far as the air valve aluminum thingy goes.

Here are some things that may help to better understand the new 2013 PSF forks. This applies to both the 2013 CRF450R and the 2013 KX450F.


What is the PSF?

It is a fork that is more of a pneumatic or air fork than last year, but it is not a “spring-less” fork. Yes, it DOES NOT have a large metal compression “fork spring” or set of fork springs as you would find in a fork that we are more familiar with, but that does not mean that it’s a “spring free” or a “spring-less” fork. In fact, it would also be incorrect to refer to the 2013 PSF fork as a pneumatic fork, as all fork designs prior to this have a pneumatic component as part of their design and, well…we don’t want to lose any respect for that.

Say what?

First off, the PSF still has a metal spring in the fork called a “balance spring” or “top out spring”. In fact, technically, it has four of these, two in each side. You could also call this a “counter spring” as it counters some of the forces applied by the compressed air. You will feel and see the effects of the balance-spring if you remove the fork from the bike and let all the air out – as the air is let out, the fork sucks down. No joke. More on this later.

Now…the other part to this madness is defining what a “spring-less” fork is because all forks and shocks often have a mixture of metal springs and air springs. So…the 2012 CRF450R had a total of six metal springs (not counting the “valving” mechanisms) and two air springs. The 2013 CRF450R has four metal springs and two air springs. And just to make things really interesting, the 06-12 YZs and the 06-12 KX450F has four air springs, and six metal springs. Those numbers will surprise or confuse a few suspension guys.

By the way, when you add or remove fork oil, in the lower chamber of a closed cartridge fork or the open bath chamber of the USDs, you are, in effect, adjusting the “air spring”.

So…no problem running about the track calling the PSF an “air fork” but let’s not get too carried away in thinking that this is some sort of radical approach to using air instead of a spring.

So…air verses a metal spring?

What is really important to understand in answering this question is the dynamics of progression. Progression is a rate of change based on position. So…as you compress a fork, it becomes harder and harder to compress. How much harder it becomes, each additional millimeter, is a measurement of the fork’s progression rate. Now...in most cases, suspension guys refer to progression as a change that follows a linear rate, meaning that it doubles in force for each equal increment in compression. So…if one inch of compression takes 10 pounds of force, then two inches of compression should take 20 pounds of force. So…we usually think of linear rates as a normal or expected path, and then use that as a guide to figure out how radical the rate changes when it becomes non-linear.

So why does that matter?

So…now we get into some interesting stuff. On the most part, metal springs are designed to progress at a linear rate…and out of our control, the compression of air of a gas compresses at a non-linear rate. So that’s means that you have to do some interesting things to get a fork to behave like we want or need when the metal spring is removed. This is the reason why the PSF has a counter-spring – they are using a metal spring to counter the early progression of forces that are related to the compression of air. So there.

So what happens to a PSF if the fork seals leak?

In short, you’re hosed. In fact, it’s worse than what people realize. Here’s why. First, most of the PSF forks will be operating with a pressure rating between 33 to 40 PSI. Additionally, there is not a lot of volume involved. What that means is that even a small fork leak will have a dramatic effect. AND…making matters worse, the more air you lose, the more the counter or balance spring is going to want to pull (yes, PULL!) the bike down. So…if the fork seal leaks, you are in trouble and most likely your day it done.

Could a leaky fork seal cause me to lose a race or have to pull out?

Very much. A change in pressure, of even just a pound or two of air, is the equivalent of changing your forks springs from something very stiff to something very soft. Imagine racing and going from a .48KG spring to a .42KG spring within a few laps? That could make certain jump launches and whoop sections very tricky if not completely impossible to hit at any speed. You could also have a severe failure which would quickly end your day….and could possible mean that you won’t be going home in something that doesn’t have flashing lights on top of it.

Yikes! What were they thinking?!?!

So…this is when it’s going to sting just a bit. In the world of business and manufacturing there is this thing called, “COGS”, which is short for “Cost of goods sold”. It is the cost of the material that a manufacture uses to assemble the bike. So…if Honda purchases a bolt for $2 and last year it cost $3, their COGS went down $1 and that means they make $1 more per bike this year than last. NOW…the driving factor for the PSF, (and the SFF) was to reduce to cost, and the driving factor for reducing COGS was the recession that started in 2008, which hit manufactures VERY hard. So...the PSF is not about evolving the technology, it’s about reducing costs. HOWEVER, if you can evolve the technology some small amount and also reduce cost, then it’s a good thing. But…we are giving up reliability to gain a small margin of performance.

Is the PSF a better fork than the standard SSS?

Not really…I mean, it’s here and it’s not going away. The PSF can certainly be tuned to operate as a better fork, and performance wise, it might be better out of the box as a SSS, but…in the real world, in which most of us spend some money to tune our suspensions, the SSS has a big advantage.

Is the PSF not an engineering marvel?

It is not. In fact, if you started with a clean slate of designing a “spring-less” fork that offered maximum performance, this would not be the design. This may have something to do with why Yamaha is not on board with the PSF, (just assuming). However, it’s a great compromise between performance and keeping the cost of a bike low. The 2013-14 SHOWA SFF A-Kit is a much better example of a pneumatic fork that is ideally engineered. There are also a collection of high-end downhill mountain bike forks that offer much more performance over cost reduction.

Does the PSF use the same main seal as other forks?

No. It is a new seal that seals better and will last longer. However, it also has a higher static friction rating than a 06-12 seal.

Could I use a standard seal from a 48mm KYB fork?

Yes…and no. Yes, in that it will fit and work, but…as with most things, there is always a balancing act between durability and performance. I'm sure we are not too far off from suspension companies coming out with a "PSF seal" with various claims. To be honest with you, SKF makes a 48mmHD seal, (part number KIT48KHD) which would really be the best seal for the PSF. I would upgrade to this...day one.

Is there something that can be done to keep the fork from failing if the fork seal fails?

Not really. I mean, you could create something that seals the inner cartridge from the main seal but all that means is that you just have two seals, which is not much different than just having one seal with multiple sealing lips. So again, durability and performance. And certainly, anything that happens with the fork tube (nick or dent) is going to cause a leak regardless of the seal or number of seals. I mean, this is a telescopic fork, so…you can run…but you can’t hide.

Is there anything I can do to make a fork seal last longer and/or not fail?

Yes…don’t wash your bike.

Say what?

When you wash a bike you wash away a layer of oil on the lower tube (and shock shaft) that actually helps the seal to seal and to stay healthy. Additionally, when most riders wash their bikes they leave water behind on the lower tube and due to the minerals in hard water, that’s like leaving little sanding pads on the fork that are destined to destroy a seal. The moral of the story? If and when you wash a bike, clean the suspension chrome (front and rear) of any water and then lube the tube. A rag with some suspension fluid is best. WD-40 is the worst, (it's a reactive solvent that destroys seals). And never spray anything around a brake rotor.

Can I take a PSF and easily convert it to a metal compression spring type set-up, as in last year with the SSS fork?

Easy and low cost? No. You can’t simply just drop in last year’s cartridges with a spring, which if you could, would run you about $1000 if you purchase the parts from a dealer. In other words, there is no quick fix to this issue.

Will the fork change as the outside air warms up, or as the fork warms up?

Yes…and this too will be a big problem for some riders. All gases follow what is called “ideal gas laws” and that means that as temperatures change, or as you change altitude, the effective spring rate of the fork will change…and to be honest with you, it won’t take much. So…in some cases, you may need to adjust the air in the fork two to three times per track day ride. Even the use of the front brake will heat the fork and cause the spring rate to change. So…expect more build-up in the right fork leg than the left.

Will running nitrogen in the fork help?

Yes and no. Nitrogen will still rise in pressure as outside air or any gas does, (still follows the same laws) however, nitrogen inherently runs cooler because it takes more energy to heat it up. Neat…eh?

What was the deal with Pro Circuit saying that the fork didn’t change much when they lost air?

They were not talking about the KYB-PSF, but were referring to the 2013-14 SHOWA SFF A-kit that they are testing, which is a very different fork.

So why does the SFF A-kit not fall down into the stroke when lower chamber pressure is reduced?

Because it has different chambers, each of which are pressurized. So...redundancy. And I would assume that is does not have any counter/balance springs.

Let me know what questions you guys have and I’ll try and address them.

I'm sort of spamming this for a good friend (and a moto-friend to many of you) but i feel this could really help out. Sure hate to read this issue is ending your riding day, unacceptable actually. Anyway lot of you guys on here probably know, or have heard of Shand Garcia w/ Holeshot Magazine and the Texas motocross history book.."BERM". Well Shand is the owner of SHOCK SOX, "The 10-Second Removable Fork Seal Protector."

I have used SHOCK SOX for about 7 years now, and can attest to their functionality. I'm a believer as i havent had a seal leak since and ride (mx) about 8hrs/mnth. They can be installed and removed in as little as 10-Seconds, and provide great protection around the dust seal area. He has had Supercross guys run them in Night shows, Outdoor Nationals, and I see a TON of weekend warrior Motocross and Off-road guys sport them around here. We rely on them to keep the fork seals safe.

One note. If you do use an item such as a SHOCK SHOX, make sure the bottom edge does not extend down far enough to make contact with the fork lug when the fork bottoms.

Obviously you do not want any dirt or mud that has build-up at the bottom of the fork to be pushed up and into the SHOX.

I could also see a need for a fork guard that fully wraps around the back of the fork, as it's not too uncommon to see nicks or dents on the back side of the legs. Perhaps even a "fork bootie" would make sense.

We have no objections to products such as the SHOCK SHOX if installed and maintained correctly.

Dave J's description of the balance springs is pretty much a dead on description of the negative pressure springs of the late 70's dampener rod forks and a component of the Fox Factory Forx that were so popular back then. Those forks however used a spring and air instead of relying solely on air pressure. With the one seal being the only thing keeping the new 450 forks functional it appears to be a high tech dumbed down version of the old days. Hard to believe the OEM's would sell something as flawed as that to the general public these days. When your star rider has to have a completely different design and mfg of front fork, that's not good for the brand.

Like someone else mentioned, can you imagine if this was a KTM WP fork? The shitstorm would be endless. Being on a Japanese offering though, it's a technical marvel that offers issues for people that don't know how to maintain a bike.....got it. lol

A fork that has to be checked and adjusted (because to check it, it will lose enough pressure that it will have to be reset) every time you ride should come with the air pump included with the bike. The fact that they make you purchase a pump is absolutely rediculous.

You could also have a severe failure which would quickly end your day….and could possible mean that you won’t be going home in something that doesn’t have flashing lights on top of it.

Yikes! What were they thinking?!?!

So…this is when it’s going to sting just a bit. In the world of business and manufacturing there is this thing called, “COGS”, which is short for “Cost of goods sold”. It is the cost of the material that a manufacture uses to assemble the bike. So…if Honda purchases a bolt for $2 and last year it cost $3, their COGS went down $1 and that means they make $1 more per bike this year than last. NOW…the driving factor for the PSF, (and the SFF) was to reduce to cost, and the driving factor for reducing COGS was the recession that started in 2008, which hit manufactures VERY hard. So...the PSF is not about evolving the technology, it’s about reducing costs. HOWEVER, if you can evolve the technology some small amount and also reduce cost, then it’s a good thing. But…we are giving up reliability to gain a small margin of performance.

Is the PSF a better fork than the standard SSS?

Not really…I mean, it’s here and it’s not going away. The PSF can certainly be tuned to operate as a better fork, and performance wise, it might be better out of the box as a SSS, but…in the real world, in which most of us spend some money to tune our suspensions, the SSS has a big advantage.

Is the PSF not an engineering marvel?

It is not. In fact, if you started with a clean slate of designing a “spring-less” fork that offered maximum performance, this would not be the design. This may have something to do with why Yamaha is not on board with the PSF, (just assuming). However, it’s a great compromise between performance and keeping the cost of a bike low. The 2013-14 SHOWA SFF A-Kit is a much better example of a pneumatic fork that is ideally engineered. There are also a collection of high-end downhill mountain bike forks that offer much more performance over cost reduction.

Does the PSF use the same main seal as other forks?

No. It is a new seal that seals better and will last longer. However, it also has a higher static friction rating than a 06-12 seal.

Could I use a standard seal from a 48mm KYB fork?

Yes…and no. Yes, in that it will fit and work, but…as with most things, there is always a balancing act between durability and performance. I'm sure we are not too far off from suspension companies coming out with a "PSF seal" with various claims. To be honest with you, SKF makes a 48mmHD seal, (part number KIT48KHD) which would really be the best seal for the PSF. I would upgrade to this...day one.

Is there something that can be done to keep the fork from failing if the fork seal fails?

Not really. I mean, you could create something that seals the inner cartridge from the main seal but all that means is that you just have two seals, which is not much different than just having one seal with multiple sealing lips. So again, durability and performance. And certainly, anything that happens with the fork tube (nick or dent) is going to cause a leak regardless of the seal or number of seals. I mean, this is a telescopic fork, so…you can run…but you can’t hide.

Is there anything I can do to make a fork seal last longer and/or not fail?

Yes…don’t wash your bike.

Say what?

When you wash a bike you wash away a layer of oil on the lower tube (and shock shaft) that actually helps the seal to seal and to stay healthy. Additionally, when most riders wash their bikes they leave water behind on the lower tube and due to the minerals in hard water, that’s like leaving little sanding pads on the fork that are destined to destroy a seal. The moral of the story? If and when you wash a bike, clean the suspension chrome (front and rear) of any water and then lube the tube. A rag with some suspension fluid is best. WD-40 is the worst, (it's a reactive solvent that destroys seals). And never spray anything around a brake rotor.

Can I take a PSF and easily convert it to a metal compression spring type set-up, as in last year with the SSS fork?

Easy and low cost? No. You can’t simply just drop in last year’s cartridges with a spring, which if you could, would run you about $1000 if you purchase the parts from a dealer. In other words, there is no quick fix to this issue.

Will the fork change as the outside air warms up, or as the fork warms up?

Yes…and this too will be a big problem for some riders. All gases follow what is called “ideal gas laws” and that means that as temperatures change, or as you change altitude, the effective spring rate of the fork will change…and to be honest with you, it won’t take much. So…in some cases, you may need to adjust the air in the fork two to three times per track day ride. Even the use of the front brake will heat the fork and cause the spring rate to change. So…expect more build-up in the right fork leg than the left.

Will running nitrogen in the fork help?

Yes and no. Nitrogen will still rise in pressure as outside air or any gas does, (still follows the same laws) however, nitrogen inherently runs cooler because it takes more energy to heat it up. Neat…eh?

What was the deal with Pro Circuit saying that the fork didn’t change much when they lost air?

They were not talking about the KYB-PSF, but were referring to the 2013-14 SHOWA SFF A-kit that they are testing, which is a very different fork.

So why does the SFF A-kit not fall down into the stroke when lower chamber pressure is reduced?

Because it has different chambers, each of which are pressurized. So...redundancy. And I would assume that is does not have any counter/balance springs.

Let me know what questions you guys have and I’ll try and address them.

Okay...a good question.

So all around us, pressing in our body and all objects around us, is this thing called atmospheric pressure. For where most of us live our lives, it's about 14PSI. This is simply the weight of the air pressing down on us much like water would be squeezing us as we sunk to the deep end of the pool or if we went diving in the ocean. We live in a soupy mix of air molecules.

So..if you take something like a tire gauge and look at it, without it being connected to your tire valve, the gauge should actually read 14, not "0".

Now...as you move up away from the surface of the earth, this pressure falls, just as much as would be the case of you rising towards the surface if you were diving in the ocean. Less molecules of air, (or water) means less pressure pressing on your body.

This is why a balloon filled with helium becomes larger and larger as it moves up and away from the surface of the earth. It's also why aircraft have to have pressurized cabins.

So...at sea level, about 14PSI. At 2000 feet above sea level, this pressure is about 12 PSI. At 4000 feet, the pressure is about 9 and at about 12,000 feet (close to the highest point one can ride a bike) the pressure is only about 3 PSI.

So...balloons will expand as they move up and away from the earth. A fork, however, cannot expand or balloon out as it has a solid structure or shell to it. HOWEVER...this is a matter of one pressure in one atmosphere doing battle with pressure in another atmosphere. So...if you have a KYB PSF fork charged to 35 PSI at sea level, the fork is pushing out with 35PSI of force and is being met with 14PSI of force on the other end - one spring pushing out and being countered with another spring pushing in...so to speak. Now...take that fork up to 4000 feet and suddenly you have 36PSI only being met with 9PSI, and that means that your 35PSI filled fork is now more like a fork that is filled to 40PSI.

So...as you move up in altitude, the "air" fork spring becomes stronger and stronger do you would have to let some air out...if you wanted to maintain your ideal "spring rate". Of course, metal (traditional) spring don't care if they are at sea level or on the moon....so if have a normal spring in your fork, it doesn't matter where you ride.

I doubt most of us will have to be concerned by this since most of us will not be traveling distances on our bikes with very large differences in altitude. Perhaps only those hard core off-road guys in California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.

But again, a very different reaction than what we would get if the fork had a metal spring in it.

I have been riding a 2013 KX450 since last Summer, the Air Forks are great and I love them racing Vet B MX and arenacross. I recently rode again in Mesquite NV's desert and compared to a re-valved 2012 Fork, I could not believe the performance gain. We were able to add 60 miles to our loop with another tank of gas. Last year I could barely hang on for a 60 mile loop.

Just today I rode a 2013 CRF450R in the desert, not so much to my liking. I'll stick to a Kawi.

Last year at Powder Mountain I was up to 40 PSI at 7,800 feet. At 5,000 I run 34 PSI.

well i know im late but i bought my 2013 kx450 july last year i race WORCS series and have blown out both fork seals but fork oil only no air loss at all. lost fork oilo and raced over an hour with them both blown finished race checked air pressure and didnt lose any. with stock also blew one out SKF and no aire leaked out the only complaited i can think of is how air pressur rises during race or long moto.

I had my air forks done by www.mb1suspension.com. I think their the best on the air stuff.. theirs even a page of info on their website. They can answer your questions no problem

I got this air equalizer called an "AirPro air fork equalizer" made life a hell of a lot easier to check pressure and stay on top of it. I got mine on their website. www.airprofork.com, hope this helps
