I recently replaced the stock clutch on my 09 YZ450 with the Rekluse Core EXP 2.0. I'd heard good-and bad-things about this clutch...but most of the "bad" coming from the motocross side of things, and since I ride off road (Hare Scrambles and Hare and Hounds), I felt I'd roll the dice and drop the $899 (OUCH!) on one.

The UPS guy delivered it to me, and I took my bike up to the guy that does all the work on my bikes (from valves, to suspension, to clutches) and he put it in for me, and I got my bike back the day before I was leaving for a race (a GP-that ran the moto track down there) in Mesquite, NV. I got to Mesquite on Friday and went through the recommended break-in procedure (it took about 30 minutes). Let the bike cool, and made the recommended post break in adjustment to the "gap" to get the "free play gain" into spec (those are terms that were foreign to me prior to this clutch), and put it away.

Turns out, it rained all night long, and all morning long...and as I was going to the start line, it was STILL raining! The course was a 10 mile loop which included the mx track. The course was deep sand, and the track was a slippery muddy mess.

The clutch performed FLAWLESSLY! I honestly couldn't tell the difference in clutch feel...but it was there when I needed it (like when I tipped over). It was amazing! And if I didn't tell you there was a rekluse in my bike you'd never know the difference....simply in the fact that I didn't have to waste energy kick starting my bike mid race almost made the cost of the clutch worth it alone! But sand and mud isn't really where the clutch "shines". So the fact that I was happy with it there was a relief (I'd hate to feel like I wasted $900).

After the race, as I'm waiting in line to exit the course, my bike cooled down...and all the sudden, I couldn't get the clutch to engage (even with the lever pulled all the way in). I'd start it in neutral, pull in the clutch lever...drop it into gear and it would stall. That meant I had to push a 240lb dirt bike-with another 30lbs of mud back to the truck (after racing for an hour and a half in deep sand and mud)...I was ticked!

I got home, and called Rekluse...they said I probably didn't break it in thoroughly prior to the post break in gap adjustment and recommended that I do the post break in gap adjustment again, check the free play gain, and then see how it works.

It worked great...in my drive way.

With the cold weather up here, and my relatively busy schedule, I had no chance to ride the bike again until a hare and hound in St. George a month later.

We get to St George, and get to the race relatively early so I can at least ride it up and down pit row a few times to check it out...works fine.

This race was typical hare and hound...nearly 90 miles of wide open washes, trails, and fire roads...in between sections of sand whoops and very technical rocky sections (one in particular being Dutchmans Draw...which, in sections, seemed more like a trials course in that we were riding over/around/betwen Volkswagen sized boulders). And here is where the clutch REALLY shined. It the technical sections it was almost like I was cheating! Literally...it made those technical sections SO much easier not having to worry, at all, about stalling the bike. And, again, the energy/time savings of not having to kick the bike over mid-race easily improved my results by a ton!

It worked flawlessly...It was there when I needed it, and I didn't even know it was there when I didn't as I could still feather the clutch in corners-or anywhere-as necessary. Though I did find myself getting lazy and not using the clutch at all in most places-and that worked great too.

No more left arm pump (which I always struggled with). No more time and energy wasted kick starting the bike.

All in all, its a great product (just break it in properly Wink )! I'm absolutely surprised more riders don't use it in moto/supercross (I know a ton of privateers use it...but none of the top mx/sx teams are officially "sponsored" by rekluse-doesn't mean they aren't using it-or using their own version of it though and it wouldn't surprise me if they were...its that good).

I can recommend it to anyone!

Awesome review, still seems super expensive for a clutch though! However, it might be the difference between salvaging good points and none at all!

I swear by my rekluse for offroad riding and racing.
They Core EXP is very pricey but If they make the exp 2.0 kit for your bike its not that bad $400 and it works exactly the same as the Core EXP.
For motocross I doubt I would spend the money on one but for offroad its one of the best aftermarket parts you can put on your bike. You save so much energy in tight technical riding.

Nice review man. I've run a Rekluse z-start Pro since July of 2008 and have used them in both my 2006 CRF450 and my CR500AF. Mostly motocross-a lot at Washougal-but also GPs. There is no way to count the number of times I have NOT stalled the bike in corners or in tip overs. Also, it is incredibly cool to be able to come into a corner hot, and get on the brakes as hard as needed without using my left hand and with zero worry about stalling it. In tricky GP sections of course, it it untouchable.

Paid $550 for mine and absoutely love em. Plus, when you want to sell your bike, you can either sell it with the bike or take it out and get a pretty good price for it on ebay.

Awesome product.

IMO, one of the best aftermarket products ever invented.

I've had their products in my last three bikes and have had complete success with them. Had the Z-Start Pro in the first two and am running the EXP 2.0 in my current.

We love our Rekluse clutches. We used them in SX this year and our Pro Endurocross/off-road rider has used them for years with much happiness. They make a lot more products now then just auto clutches to. Great Review though.

I really want one, but I just can't justify the cost for a rapidly aging weekend warrior like me. But man, I really want one, I'd love to be able to hit a sharp turn in third and not have to clutch it going out.

I've used Rekluse since 04 . My wife insisted on getting one for her CRF250R for MX racing. I tried her bike and didn't see any downsides, so got one in my 03 450. Been hooked ever since. Had the same Z-Start in my 03,06, and 08 CRF450 's and she's had them in her 04, 06, and 10 250's, and 08 150RB, never had a failure or wore a clutch out in any bike. Now have a13 450 and can't wait to get an EXP Core installed. Best aftermarket product ever.

I use a rekluse also.. In both my 300 and my 450.. A rekluse isn't a MUST on a 300, but on a 450 it is... Especially if you plan to ride it in tight gnarly terrain and expect to hang with the smokers..

I use the EXP 2.0 in my 2010 YZ450F. I think its great for MX, makes it much easier to stay smooth through corners. I love it and wouldn't have an MX bike without it.

I had one in a rmz 450 I got and did not get on with it for mx. I could go through corners a gear higher but I could not get used to the runaway train feeling as i chopped the throttle. I carry more speed in to corners and sort of coast through them but I rely on the the engine breaking to plant the bike if that makes any sense at all. But i can see the advantages in really muddy conditions or a tight woods race where it would really save you energy over a few hours.

Zach Bell needs one of these on his bike!

Best thing since sliced bread, on or off the track. I have had mine for 5 years, If you are a vet or old guy, there is no reason not to have one, It will save you so much energy, the only thing to worry about is getting lazy and becoming a rear brake dragger into corners.

A few mates bought them, and swore by them. I am not one to buy gimmicks, but I bit the bullet and bought one for my CRF450.
A group of us mostly trail ride now, so I got the EXP 2.0, happy to say it's best god damn invention ever.

I rode a guys bike with one before. A crf450 same year as mine. Guess it wasn't properly set, cause I noticed some things that I didn't like on a mx track. There was slipping or hesitation in it when exiting a slow corner, and that is not cool when trying to seat bounce a jump out of the corner. Second, it felt like it wanted to keep moving a little bit when letting off the throttle, not like it was completely disengaged.

I would say that the only time I have felt strangeness like that is when the clutch plates were worn out. Once replaced it felt good again. No problems in slow corners or letting off throttle. It may not be for everyone but I know people of different levels of mx experience that love it. Slow riding is where this thing excells at. Fast riding there is no difference. Coming into a corner, locking up the rear wheel and slamming the berm and taking off without stalling or touching the clutch is amazing. But like everything, it is not for everyone, but the people who I find that don't like it are usually the ones who can't afford it or justify it in their minds.

After riding with this clutch, It's no surprise to me that I'm not the only person that LOVES this product! It is absolutely phenomenal! One of the coolest aftermarket products I've ever used!

I've heard that with the Z start Pro, there is some mild hesitancy at lower RPS or other nuances you won't experience with a "standard" clutch...with the EXP Core...there is absolutely NONE of that, at all, anywhere in the power band! A hair less engine braking, yes, but no worse than a two stroke.

That's what I was thinking right away, is that something was out of whack. The guy who owned the bike seemed to keep his stuff I great condition since it had a kit on it and is always clean as a whistle down to the fork lugs and axle spacers. I really would like to try another one that is setup RIGHT. I can see from a few minutes of it where it could make a difference in the woods and single track

The Z-start Pro needed to be set-up properly but once it was mine was great. It had a couple different settings and you needed to tune it to your style. If you didn't I could see someone not liking it. I just ordered an EXP 2.0 for my CRF250 because for the price you can't go wrong, imo. I will post up once it comes in and I give it a try..............

Thanks for the review. Much appreciated. I gotta get one for my 500AF. I've read and heard that's the ultimate combo.
