I have no idea who is in this pic, but it sure fits this thread. It was on a disc of photos someone gave me. The dude on the white framed orange glassed Montesa Cappra is in the zone. The old DT/MX Yamaha has style for miles.Good times for sure.

The Yamaha rider is Paul "Bermshot" Burnett, from Dallas.

No shit? That is cool. Paul and I had some epic battles on the early CR125's at the TVRC races back in the early 90's until he broke his neck at Swan back in '95. He's back at it and having fun. Those pics came from a disc that Kirk Spencer gave my brother. I just always thought that photo depicted everything great about moto. Paul made a run at the pro ranks back in the 70's, referred to himself as a "professional speedbump" once! Laughing Had some really good times out on the track with him.

The rider in my photo (thread starter) is definitely the type of guy he appears to be. My dad said he was always really aggressive and pushed anyone around. Last time we were in Colorado riding, Gary (the rider) said he couldn't wait to retire from the small business he owns, so he could walk down Main Street and finally tell all of the customers he can't stand to f*** off.

Another good story about this era - one of the other riders in our group had an early 70s 125 Bultaco. He had just rebuilt the top end, and was about to install new chain & sprockets. Before putting the new chain on, he thought he'd fire the bike up and let the new piston warm up.

The throttle stuck wide open, right there on the stand.

Without a chain, all he could do was try to pull the plug cap. He of course got shocked, and even after he pulled the plug it kept running. The only other thing left to do, was to walk out and close the door.

It's a hilarious story and always funny to hear him tell it.

Paul was fast back in the day. Here's a pick of him racing with fast company at the '82 national at Lake Whitney.

I think the guy on the Montesa in the photo with Burnett might be Gary Wells, the jumper. I remember seeing him at Cloverfield in 1972 and the combination of orange Montesa + stars on the leathers + T-shirt looks familiar.

Gotta love the first photo in the thread: Don't waste your money on protective gear for yourself, put it where it counts--fork boots!

Here is one of me in my first race. 1972 on a 1958 BSA Gold Star somewhere in North Carolina. Check out that style. I got my first trophy that day. i bent both foot pegs off this jump that day.

Here is another one I like of me in 1979 on a 1978 YZ250. It's in Arizona in a gravel pit. It was so dusty and hot that day. This berm was so powdery but the shot came out great.

NY State rider Leo Wilson on his Maico. Canadians may recognize this as the Natural Double at Walton. Great shot taken by my uncle back in the 70's. Love the look on the kids face at the end.

This photo is great - completely depicts the era I think. No fencing, natural track, awkward riding styles...really cool composition too.

Michigan Motocross, 1973. Maybe last race of the year? Steve Ellis on a 125 Penton and Jack Borg TM-125 at Brighton, real AMA points paying event. Most MX'ers say "we ride rain or shine", how about at 30 degrees in the snow?

What made it your favorite? Just curious, especially given the age.

I've ridden a few of my dad's restored Pentons - it's insane how bizarre they feel compared to anything relatively new.

Jack Borg is my uncle and I'm trying to find more information on his racing career. THANK YOU for this photo. I assume he is in Red?? Do you have any others? Or any more information??

Nothing spells out "great vintage moto pic" better than a Team DG/Team FMF throwdown. Even the PC/FC stuff doesn't come close.

Maybe because they weighed in around 175 lbs stock? They are quite flimsy if you weigh over 120 pounds, but damn they are fun little bikes. Maybe because there was sooooo much trick stuff available for them? Maybe because when I got into vintage racing I beat a 75 KX400 up a big ass hill. FMF and DG literally built their businesses off the early CR125's as did many other hop up shops. It's hard to pin it down to any one thing as there was so much going on back then based on that one bike.

You mention how bizarre they feel compared to modern bikes, try riding them both in back to back motos. Just be careful the first time you grab the front brake on a modern bike after hopping straight off something from 1974!!

Here's a couple of old shots from Saddleback and from the Trans-USA in 1980. Bauer probably won't recognize Hannah from Saddleback, because he never saw that side of Hannah's jersey Laughing

Meanwhile behind the "iron curtain"... when men and machines were made of iron... well, everything was made of iron in Soviet Union.

Green fencing was´t invented yet...

Global warming was´t invented yet... (-28 C was normal racing day)

Canister was´t invented yet...

Helmet was´t invented yet...
