Ok, so I just got this about a week ago & it was sitting in this dudes barn for about 3 years not being ran or taken care of. I will say that overall it is in awesome shape, atleast considering I only paid $175 for it. It is a complete bike, however, it is very dusty & is in need of some cleaning up & maybe paint.

Anyways, I got it home, took of the fuel tank & carb. I cleaned both very thoroughly! The bike looks as if it had been used for a couple years & just left to sit & collect dust & rust. Again, I can't stress the sweet shape this thing is in for the money!!!!!!!

After putting everything back together, (I am very mechanically inclined, I used to work on cars for a living, but I have not been around 2 strokes enough to know much about them) I got it running! It took a few kicks, but it started & ran great. After letting it idle for a few minutes to burn out all the old crap in the motor, I tried to rev it up & it is not peaking RPM's!!!!!!! It idles perfectly, but once you get on the gas, at about 1/2 throtle, it seems to bogg. I am torn on what to do here. Give me a four stroke & I could tell you the problem, but a 2 stroke? New to me!!!

I have checked the spark, plug gap, air cleaner & carb. I am stuck as to where to go from here!!!!!!! Reeds??

PLEASE OFFER ANYTHING YOU CAN TO HELP!!!!!!!!!! I AM DUMBFOUNDED ON THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take the carb apart and replace or thoroughly clean the jets. Sounds like you may have a clogged main. Also inspect the reeds. Also have you checked the float height?

Make sure the needle is set correctly. Also REALLY make sure the jets aren't clogged. Especially if it's been sitting so long. Wouldn't be bad to flush the tank and get a new fuel filter either.

Check the power valve for function, it may be stuck.

So, here is what I found out today.

I took the side plate off the engine to check the function of the power valve as well as the expantion pipe to watch the valve move. Everything seems to be working properly. There was a bit of carbon buildup in the side plate, but I cleaned what I could out without disassembling anything even further.

After I put it back together, I started the bike, let it warm up for a minute & then hit the throtle a couple times. STILL NOTHING!!!!! I am stumped.

So far, I have cleaned the carb, (more than 5x's), checked the power valve, tried adjusting the air/fuel mixture screw, changed the air filter, checked the exhaust for any blockage & I tried letting it run for a few minutes to see if maybe it needed to burn out some of the old junk in the engine that I was unable to completely remove. I also tried changing the plug. The original plug is an NGK BR8EG, I replaced it with an NGK BR8ES, which for some reason made it run even worse! It didn't even want to idle with the new plug, so I put the old one back in, started it, & it idled perfectly again.

WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE????? The only thing I have not taken apart to check is the reed valve, but I felt them with my finger through the intake port, looked at them with a flashlight & they feel/look intact & in working order. (No holes or gashes or anything major that would cause it not to function properly.) I mean WHAT could I be missing here???!!!!!

Also, it smokes like a train when I hit the throtle, like it's running way to rich. It smokes a bit when it's idleing too, but I thought that this was caused from burning out old carbon deposits???

PLEASE GIVE ADVISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A couple more things to check. You say it smokes bad under throttle. You may have a leaking right crank seal. Sitting up that long and a bike that age wouldn't surprise me. Does the smoke smell like two stroke exhaust or does it smell like burning engine oil? If engine oil, it's definitely the right crank seal (unless you used 10W40 for premix). The seal could be popped out of place. To check it, you'll have to drain the water and pull the right side engine cover.

One other thing and this may not even be possible now, I "think" that bike may have two sets of ignition coils. High speed coils and low speed coils. If the high speed coils are bad in the stator then the bike will stop firing above a certain RPM. The only thing I can tell you about checking them is to search for the specs and ohm the stator. I'm thinking there are three wires on the stator and you'll have to ohm 1-2, 1-3, and 2-3. If they read open or closed you may have a bad stator. Do a little research though because I could be way off base. That bikes more than a few years old.

Then again, it could just have a lot of old premix oil built up in the crank case that will take a long hard run to fully burn out. I had a crank seal leak on a 500. Once I cleaned the seal and got it started it still smoked pretty bad. I rode it in the pits about two minutes and it started clearing up. Turned out it just took a few minutes to blow all the old oil out of the crank case and pipe.

What are you mixing it at?

Ok, the crank seal sounds plausable, but I will have to run it again & smell the smoke to know for sure. I'm pretty sure it's not the stator, but I'll try that as a last resort kinda thing just incase.

As for my premix, I'm running it at 32:1. That is what I saw was recommended for my bike. That being said, I know it's not the mix fouling plugs or anything. I mean, the fuel mixture is not that rich.

Thinking ouside the box, could there be anything else that would cause it not to rev past a quarter throttle?

This may be a stupid question, but I don't see any reference to it. Did you clean and re-oil the air filter? If not, you may have a mouse nest plugging the whole air box. If you did, did you over oil the filter?

Also check to see if you have good fuel flow from your tank, the filter/valve in the tank may be stopped up? or as above main filter and or jetting.

Well, I don't have an air filter on it right now because I just want to get it running & I cleaned out the air box.

I know it has good fuel flow from the tank & there is no in line filter on it. I've had it apart enough times that I know the jets are clean & clear of debris.

I called 2 Honda dealers in my area today & asked them if they could give me any pointers on where to look for a problem. I told them that it sat for a few years without being messed with at all. I took it home, cleaned out everything I could think of, got it started & it idles perfectly, but when you get to a quarter throttle or more it boggs out. (Something else I may not have told you guys on here is that when I pulled the plug out to check it, it was pretty wet.) They both told me similar stories, check the carb. They said it sounds like a fuel related problem.

Now, from everything I've noticed so far with it, it seems as if it is getting too much fuel? The plug is wet & it smokes more when it is bogging after quarter throttle. But the thing I don't get, is that if it were getting too much fuel, how is it able to idle so good??

Unsure

Oddly enough, you could be getting too much air. Try to get an air filter on it and try again.

I have tried it both on & off, it doesn't seem to make any differece. I just have it off for now until I get this thing operating correctly.

There HAS to be something screwy going on in the carb.....

Gas cap vent/checkvalve ok? I had a kink in that hose before that didn't let enough air into the gas tank.

Pull the carb again and find out what jets are in there. Could well be that the prior owner diddled with the jetting and it's totally wrong. You can find the original specs in various places.

And have you even checked the top end? The rings could be shot but still providing enough compression for it to start and run.

Maybe it's getting too much fuel? If it idles "good", it might be getting a little more than it's supposed to so it sounds like it idles good, but when throttles applied, it drowns it. Hold the throttle open for a bit until it bogs and dies, then see if it doesn't start since it's flooded. Maybe something happened when it sat and it gets too much fuel from the throttle?

By the way, when I initially pulled & cleaned the carb, when I first got the bike, after putting it back on & the initial startup, it revved out just fine hitting the peak RPM range as it should, but then..............within about 5 minutes.............this whole problem started. Just thought you guys should know that incase I hadn't already said anything about it.

I would say a crank seal.

I have also had a carb vent tube get clogged and it did the same thing. Created a vaccum lock and it would barley run.

Good luck man.

I have yet to try checking the crank seal, only because I don't want to dig into it that far unless I am positive that I have to, but as it seems, I am getting close to that point! lol

Today I took the carb off again, cleaned it AGAIN & still no juice. I checked the reeds & they are like brand new! No cracks or anything! However, it did seem to have slightly a bit more power than it did a few days ago?

TO FOLKS THAT ARE JUST GETTING INTO MY THREAD, THIS BIKE SAT FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS WITHOUT BEING TOUCHED BEFORE I BOUGHT IT!!!

I am still stumped & I am at the point of thinking about tearing it all apart COMPLETELY to check everything! I'd rather not, but I don't think I have many options left here. I thought about taking it to the nearest shop to have them diagnose it for me, but it would cost me (at the least) $110. That is just for them to look at it!!!

Slipdog, I haven't checked any electrical stuff at this point aside from it haveing spark & the kill switch works. Might be on my adgenda soon to get into this area. What would make you think it could be these issues????

Motofab, as I said, I have not checked it yet because I am trying not to spend a lot on this bike, basically becasue my wife thinks its a death machine & wants me to sell it as is right now. She was against me getting it in the first place! So I am minding my P's & Q's until the smoke clears. lol But I have heard this could be my problem more than once. Is there any other way to tell other than tearing off the side cover????

Iceman, vent tubes are clean & clear my man. Crank seal story listed above. lol Why would you sugest the crank seal though??? What would be the symptoms of a faulty seal??? Please explain in detail!!!!

Oh & my carb is a Kiehin PJ28 if that helps anyone for any reason.

I thought ignition because you said it was fine when you first started it, then it started crapping out after it ran a while and got warm. That often indicates an electrical problem, but you'd need a manual and an Ohm meter to test each part. On a 20yr old bike the inital start and heat up could have fried what was an already ailing ignition part.

You could also make the same case for old seals though, but ignition was my first hunch.

I don't know if this will help but try pulling the exhaust and blowing air through it backwards .
Had a 85 250r that sat in a barn and acted the same way you are describing and it turned out to be a large mouse nest was plugging things up. It took quite a while to dislodge it all but then it ran great.

I'm going out to try again today & see if I can put you guys' info to good use!

DJFMXpro, I appreciate the great pic with the info! It makes it much easier to know what to do. So what would the problem be if the valve doesn't move or if it only moves slightly? How would I go about fixing that & what would be some causes of it happening?

Ricks mx, I did check the exhaust once already, but I did not back blow it out. I will deffinatly give that a try as well!

Slipdog, I am really REALLY hoping its not an electrical issue! Unsure But I guess I may end up running through the electrical system at some point if I don't find any other issues more simple.

How do I upload a video????

I made a video to show you guys what its doing, but I cant figure out how to get it on here! It says enter (embed code)???? WTH is that??? It just seems like it has a governer on it that shuts down the engine at a certain RPM range????

DJFMX, my bike won't rev high enough to even tell if the power valve is operating properly or not. But I can turn it easily with a pair of pliers? Should it be solid & hard to move or whats the deal? Please explain to me how the whole thing works & how to fix it if it's broke! Thanks

If it's a Youtube video, under the video there is a share button. When you click the "share" a code box will open and you click the "embed" above the code box and it will give you the full embeded code. Just copy and paste in Vital's video link.

Here is the video. Let me know what y'all think.

But yeah I can freely turn the power valve by using my fingers from L to H. I suppose I will be doing some tear down to find out what the problwm is. But I guess the power valve not working at all could be my problem then??

Oh, & no I don't know if it's in time, I have not taken off the cylinder & I don't know if it is engaged. It feels really really loose like I can tap it with the tip of my finger & it sways around (from inside the right valve cover).

Ok so here is the low down!

I started by draining all the coolant from the engine. Then I moved on to drain the oil from the crankcase. Get this, maybe 10 drops came out!!! It had no oil in it!!! So I proceeded as follows.

I took off the right side crankcase cover to look at everything see what could be causing my problems. Once I got everything taken out of the way, I checked the bendix gear on the kick start (it was skipping when I would kick it over), it was misaligned. I looked at the power valve conections (the bearing, shown in figure 98 of your book, just above your thumb on the spring rod) I noticed that the bearing was completely toasted & had fallen off (which is why the power valve was not working). Then I saw a big bolt that had fallen down into the crankcase. The threads on the bolt itself are completely stripped off. It came out of the crankshaft, it was supposed to be holding the main gear in place. Finally I decided to check the crank seal since I was already in there digging around. I took out the little metal gromet to see how loose it was & when I looked on the other side of it, it had a small pool of oil sitting in it. So...........those of you that guessed crank seal, I would have to say that is my culprit, atleast so far. Everything else checks out pretty well. I mean I'm pretty sure that there should be NO oil inside where the crankshaft / connecting rod is. Only in the gearbox itself, right, like where the clutch & all is??

But thats how far I've gotten today & I will be ordering new seals & gaskets to get her going again.

By the way DJ, thanks a million for posting those pics for me!!!! They came in very handy as I was checking things over!!!!!
