I am not condoning his actions just saying it probably didn't help.
Funny little story about Mike. He came over to fill in for ktm on there 360 at the gp's in about 95 96. He rode the hole track in first gear revving the tits off it. In between practice and the race (I think) KTM took the gear box apart and took 1st gear out off the box so couldn't do it in the race. Nutter.
Years later, after graduating college and getting back into MX, I saw him at Starwest. I was on an RM125 with the #99 and he was riding around behind a kid on a PW50. Not sure if it iwas his kid or just a student. Anyway, I rode up to him and shouted, "Hey man, you're my old hero! I run #99 because of you."
He slowed way down, gave me an enormous high-5 and a one-armed hug (while we were both still rolling, mind you,) and a thumbs up while he cruised away. It totally made my day and seemed very sincere.
I can't say anything about his life decisions because I was never unlucky enough to be in his shoes in those situations. I'd like to believe that the guy who is genuinely happy to have met a fan is good underneath, and I wish him the best.

"It's from the Earf, man, god put this here for me and you. take advantage man, take advantage"
I suspect a lot of the guys judging him may have lived very sheltered lives. Life's not so rosy for everyone.
Speak of the devil..
I remember him showing up on Cagiva's or KTM's and just flat hauling ass. He seemed to always have time for us kids and was a nice guy. The fact that he got hooked on dope and made a few bad decisions doesn't changed my original views and interactions with the guy. People make mistakes, the honorable thing with Mike is he stepped up owned it and is doing what it takes to rebuild himself. I wish the guy nothing but success and honestly would love to see him stay stay clean and get back in the sport on some level.
Bust of luck Mike!
I am glad it was figured out that I wasn't a total f' up just because I was a total f' up. I was self medicating with alcohol to try to put out an anxiety issue. Now a couple of pills a day, and understanding that the anxiety will not kill me have helped me stay married a lot longer than the first time, have a good job, and raise two great kids.
The only difference between Healey and any other addict is he could ride a mini bike and dirt bike super well.

My only beef at this point is the chain smoking, Why the hell every rehab place thinks giving an addict a substitution of Smoking is acceptable is beyond me. You have them in there to rehab, get them off that shit too.
As with anyone, not just an ex-racer, I hope Mike can stay clean.
The day I shattered my leg, an addiction to painkillers was in my future. Through 3 surgeries & a year of rehab, Norco became pretty much my best friend. The addiction is not all in the head, flue like symptoms, cold sweats, an absolute shit feeling would come everytime I went off (& I was only taking 1 pill a day). Trying to get off them while working 40 to 50 hours per week felt virtually impossible. Finally got off by switching to anti-axiety medication for a week, but my leg still wasn't recovered, constant swelling & pressure in my calf persisted. I self-medicated for another 3 years with some lower grade pain killers ordered through the internet. Finally kicked it on my own, now feel guilty even taking an Excedrin or Asprin.
Statements like yours are extremely short sided. I don't imagine anybody really wants to be hooked. In my case, my pride stood in the way of letting anybody know the problem, my wife, brother & parents have no clue what I was dealing with. Acceptance, guidance & help would go way further than just slamming people. This is only regarding the addiction, not all the other BS he's done. It's completely possible for addicts to function in everyday society with nobody being the wiser, blaming drugs for other actions is giving a person an excuse for a lack of morality - they shouldn't be able to blame it on the drugs.
One thing I can guarantee, the use of opiates must be widespread in the sport of motocross. It's tough to get off after an injury. If you compound that with other injuries down the road while still recovering from the first, there is a constant reason to justify there existence.
he was always friendly and polite to everyone, always ready to spare a chuckle and a talk with the fans.
he was always very straight talking, no bullshit or secrets, very down to heart.
Everybody liked him here in Europe, even his competiton too, even he was aggressive, he never had any problem with anybody.
Mike Healey is a goog guy, he made a mistake (but who is faultless????), a big mistake, but we have to understand also the problems he had.
Ok, there are no excuse for robbing an old lady....but that was not the real Mike.
Mike Healey is a good guy, he apologized, he know the mistake he made.
I am happy that he recovered, I am happy that he learned the lessson and I wish him all the best!
I smoke cigarettes too...does it make me a drug user??? Or a future terrorist???? (this is pure bullshit!)
Go Mike!
You still have a lot of fans here in Europe!!!!!

the first topic was an article I wrote 7-8 years ago on Spiedomx. com, an old site that now doesn't work anymore and lost the last 2 pages of the tell.
Sorry you don't understand italian but I can tell you that all the writings are positive and everybody is cheering for him no matter what.
