I turned 50 two weeks ago. Welcome to AARP..........

Raced a 1/2 marathon on my birthday. Still race MTB and MX as much as possible. 3 adventure races this summer and the Iceman Cometh MTB race in a couple weeks.

Feel like I could be competitive (relatively) for many years to come. It takes constant commitment to fitness, stretching and my friend ICE but a small price to pay for the joy.

Lost any delusions of taking on the world years ago but it is fun to take on the 50+ world in a variety of sports. My best motivation is to stay ahead of my 14 and 16 year old kids and their friends...........so far it is working.

I just turned 53 and I have been racing all summer. I had gotten out of it for about 5 years or so and was getting fat and lazy, had a nice car that I was always driving too fast in and all of a sudden I realized I needed to get my butt back in gear. Sold the car, started eating a lot better and a lot less along with getting some exercise and started riding again this past spring. The first few times I went riding it was a little intimidating but I kept with it and got back up to the speed that I am capable of riding. Now just like another poster in this thread I find myself with a couple weekends left in the season here in Michigan and I am in a dogfight with another guy for the 50+ points. I have been having a blast and am so glad I got back on a bike!

Ditto on the fitness thing. I'm 55 and in better shape than my 4 adult kids.
I run about 25 miles a week and go to the gym 3 times a week. Starting running in 1980 and I've been hooked ever since.
Still race mx some and ride about every weekend at private tracks.

All of my non riding friends are outta shape and bitch about being old.
They're all in their 50's but sometimes act like they're in their 70's. Of course they think I'm crazy.
I just keep telling them, age is a state of mind.

I still love mx though.
It's the only sport I know of where age doesn't seem to matter. Our group ranges from 20 to 63, but when we're all at the track hanging out, the younger guys just look at us as riders.
Although I do get called old man every now and then, mostly by my 36 year old son. lol

That said, like others here, after a hard day of riding I do feel like an old man for a day or two.

I'm lucky enough to have all those things but I still want to ride dirt bikes and mountain bikes ALL the time......most of my friends and co-workers act like a bunch of old men and it just pisses me off! I never want to be like that!
I just spent 2 hours in my garage wrenching on my CRF and one of my mountain bikes and I just LOVE this stuff!

Glad that you are out there kicking ass!

I'm 33, and one of the guys I ride with is 54...He's still racing Expert class locally and HAULS ASS. I've been there many times when we had a half dozen young guys riding motos with us, and he is out there twice as long and going faster than them the whole time. He's an inspiration to me for sure. My dad died at 53 from lung cancer caused by 30+ years of smoking and a stressful, sedentary lifestyle....It was his death 7 years ago that has kept me motivated to live clean and be active for as long as I possibly can.

I'm bigger into MTB than moto myself...Mostly because i'm faster pedaling than twisting the throttle. I also ride with a few older bikers that can tear up a trail, and have watched younger "fit" guys drop out of our group rides when they couldn't keep up with guys in their 50's!

Still dont have a new knee. Smile
This is my biggest concern as I turn 40 next year and have had a few knee surgeries in the past and 80% of my cartilage was removed all those years ago. After a weekend of racing I have fairly bad arthritis in the knee...

I have read a few threads on here from guys racing after having full knee replacements...I do know every year they advance technology with knees, hips, etc...so i am hoping by the time I need one they are fully race functional!

I turn 50 next June & "Shit's gonna get real" at Mammoth & the SCORE series!

500X y'all!

Hell, think I'll even try some Vet-X & REM races.

Over the past yr I've had a shoulder, knee & finger fixed. I'm feeling good and riding a helluva lot better than I thought I would be.

It's not how old you are.

It's how you go about "getting older".

50 is gonna be a "Good Year"!

Just getting of the plane from another Rip: gonna be plenty of film showing how "Old Guys" can still shred. 8 days of motoing down to Cabo gets you pretty stoked about riding.

I'm jus' sayin'...

I race vintage now and I race more than ever, the tracks are rough but not stupid, the whole vibe is awesome and you get to race with the heros of the 70's and 80's. We get Desoto, Jones, Bell, Beier, Burnworth, Myerscough, and a lot of other guys attending our races..More fun than back in the day.

55 and a firm believer in the whole “We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing” school of thought. Just wished I hadn’t played so hard this past Labor Day weekend. The bike is just fine, BTW.

LOL. Welcome to alot of our worlds. I totally don't understand all my fat lazy friends who think I'm crazy. I think they're nuts because they'll waste a perfectly good Sat. watching football and getting fatter. I fully believe you don't quit racing when you get old, you get old when you stop racing. I still go for the win every time I line up. I kind of envy half my competitors who are perfectly happy with just riding the race (I certainly don't begrudge them). I remember watching the "oldtimers" race at Saddleback back in the day, thinking they were pretty slow. At 50 I'm definitely jumping higher and farther than I ever did as a fast 20 yo so. cal int. I'm not sure how many more injuries I have left in me, or how much longer I'll be this hyper competitive. I just hope that when I do slow down, I'll be able to at least ride.and have fun. And yes wrenching on bikes is almost as fun as riding them.

I'll be 49 this year. Just picked up an '04 YZ250 and plan to race some hare scrambles. I find it difficult expecting to ride to the same level I did back in the day (1983). Yet, I am so looking forward to the competition again. I forget I don't have the endurance I had in the past, but I'm working to get back as much as I can. Still in good health...for now!

Here is my new (old) ride...

Before rebuild...

Im happy I dont have to pee after 3 laps plus I added two more hip pads instead of wearing depends, although depends would be better protection than those cheap pads. never crossed my mind after a crash where I said " good thing I had my hip pads on"

gonna turn 50 next april,i been racin mx since 83 , raced a little hare and hound in the 70s, raced snocross in 2000, i raced every class in mx from novice to pro, im a old crappy vet now , and i enjoy ridding the practice tracks as much as racing , all of my friends are from ridding or racing its what i do.

i have a comment to make, i have also been following the Mike Healey thread here, read on , ill get to it.

I have had my share of injuries, matter of fact i cant name them all, they were all my fault, i blame no one cept the idiot ridding the bike/sled,

any way i love mx , and i love anything with a motor im thinking about lorretas next year if i can get in in the 50 class, ok im getting away from it, i wil always keep going its what i do ive been down and out but never thought i couldnt ride again

in 2000 i broke my pelvis, spent 30 days in the hospital, they sent me home with 125 oxcy cottons, i took one, flushed the rest

in 2001, i dislocated my shoulder, tor rotater cuff, had surgery, more pain killers

in 2002 i dislocated my hip and broke the socket, two weeks in "jail" more drugs

in 2010 i broke 5 ribs and seperated left shoulder, overnight stay, and a bottle of morphine pills ( took one they are nasty) still got them in case i get hurt

ok so u get the piont im a really shitty rider, hopefully i only hurt mysellf and not others around me, and the moral to my story is that i really love ridding and racing i have come on hard times and have had evey excuse to abuse drugs ( i can call my dr rite now and get a script for anything), and i am not in pain i think activity keeps my from seizing up,drugs are stupid if u abuse them they have a purpose, and should be respected and o ya new england guys are the toughest muthas out there, i am a complete pussy compared to the absolute man Doug Henry

here is what tyhe doc sees when i go in for a check up

dates on camera are messed up top pic is just pelvis bottom is when i broke the hip, ill tell u what the god dam shoulder herts way worse than anything else

I am 19 years old and I hope and pray that I will still be riding when I reach yalls age. Motocross is the greatest sport in the world and I wouldnt trade it for anything. I have already made the difficult decision to not play college basketball just so I could continue to ride motocross. The thought of giving up motocross scared the S@%$ out of me. Every weekend I go riding and as soon as I get home, I cant wait to go riding again the next weekend. All I can say is I love this sport and I hope im riding when im 70. Ride on fellas and be safe on your dirt scooters.

Funny thing is, I have TONS of aches and pains from riding, racing and especially working hard all my life, but I just deal with them and live my life as best I can. It's all in your head really. If you start thinking you are old, you will feel and act old. I do fun stuff that keeps me young. I'm not stuck in the past like most of my friends and family. I live and let live and don't judge younger people on how they look or how they dress. I listen to old music sometimes, but I LOVE a ton of new music as well. You just have to give it a chance and not be an old fart. Like I said, it's all a mind set.
Good call, Terry.

People regularly guess that I'm in early-to-mid-40s, and I just turned 52. (Yeah, it feels weird to say.)

I look forward to what's next, and am smart enough to not make some of the same painful mistakes that I've made in the past.

The biggest thing that slows me down from hopping on board an MX bike is some arthritis in my fingers (particularly on the outer three fingers of my camera hand), but I do spend a lot more time cycling now...both road and MTB.

Went and saw The Black Keys on Monday. Have an awesome new girlfriend who's ten years younger than I am. Life is good.

Oh yeah?!? LOL If I don't get injured before then I might have something to say about your Mammoth plans. Damn, another cocky freshman coming up. Thanks for the warning!! 2012 was technically my best chance at Mammoth in a long time since I had just turned 50. I blew it around the JM tree turn while cruising in second in one of my 4 motos and there went the overall. We can get real in 2013 at Mammoth and of course a few REM's to get ready and maybe even early November for the Vet Worlds at Glen Helen. Ya might want to re-think that KX, at Mammoth at least......or not. I'm jus' sayin....

Oh yeah. Welcome to the club in June.

Congrats, I think you get it. You've made the first step to being a battered, bent but not broken 50+ has been just like us, rather than a rich, retired 35 year old BBall rock star. I too was faced with a similar decision when my high school football coach kept pulling me out of classes and badgering me to play football. Just remember, chicks dig scars, your on the right path to motocross addiction. Keep the rubber side down Grasshopper.
