Seems the stock one let me down

I like OEM clutch plates and pistons, but what's the take on cranks. I did look at the crankshaft sites posted earlier.

It's hit or miss, but the OEM KXF450 has been a week spot for awhile... so go Wiseco or Hot Rods if the price differance is there

I am under the impression all new cranks need to be 'balanced' or similar, before installation.

I beleive Hickman and CrankWorks each perform 'some' hands-on activity, but not sure any more.

If its a Kawi, steer clear of stock. Hot Rods make quality cranks.

Go with the Hot Rods or Wiseco. Cheaper than OEM and on some model's you can get the Stroker crank and bump up the displacement without having to get a big bore kit.

Get it it balanced while you are there...

I'm suprised you guys keep talking about balancing cranks. Most people think it's a waste of money.

I do it, bought a really nice balancer couple of years ago... Have been doing quite a bit of cranks lately... it comes and goes though.. I always have a big surge right before Ponca, and LL's... and start of SX or MX.

A lot of old engine builders think it's only worth it on multicylinder machines.

Is it balancing or truing? Doesn't take a lot of semi-rough handling to get a crank a bit out of true if it's not welded.

For what it's worth, the Wiseco cranks I have seen come through lately, say "Made in China" on the box.

You could run it out of the box, but it would be so much more sweet if its balanced. If I could warrant it, I would do the whole tranny. Those clutch baskets are evil like a washing machine.

Think any of those bikes on the national series have unbalanced cranks? If they do, they are running sweep.

I have been wondering about these things lately. I have a yz250f and have been wanting more power out of it. I weigh in around 175 and have my suspension done. But i never could justify spending more money on the motor. Other than maintenance of course. Problem is i stepped on a 450 and fell in love. What kind of gains could i get with a set of valves, cams, and crank... Would it be reliable? I race in the B class. What would it change for my bike as in feeling of the motor?

The head is fine. I'm sitting in the pits right now waiting to go out for practice 2 today and was thinking about how hard I was running my 08'. I have 4 more hours to put on it this week before I leave for the race. It's there in the ba k of my mind, for sure.

Yeah, .005 runout is way out of whack. Then add on top of it the difference in size of the wheels, that is some crappy craftsmanship. Even if the crank was trued correctly the bigger wheels would alter the engine's performance by decreasing the crankcase volume. Maybe better, maybe worse.

I always throw new cranks on the truing stand to measure them before instalation. All the OEM Honda cranks I've checked were .001 or less.

The way that guy checked the runout is not the way to check a crank... you do not check a crank on the ends like that.

You support the crank on the bearing surface to check runout.

How are OEM Kawi cranks?

Tim, I never checked any OEM Kawi ones, but I would imagine their manufacturing tolerances would be similar to Honda. I noticed for the 09 KX450 they say it has "works level crank balancing" so that's probably really nice.

Williams, I've measured them the same way that guy did, support the ends and measure runout on the bearing surface. What runout are you measuring when you support it on the bearing surface?

I know you are pressed for time, but did Phil at CrankWorks or Jim H at Hickman give any help? Hickman opens after 10am CDT and CW is Az time.

Feel free to say Jim Johnson, from Iowa, referred you. It won't get you a discount, but will "break the ice".
