Given KTM's two stroke sales numbers, Yamaha can certainly validate updating these bikes. At the very least the look.

That would be awesome if Yamaha upgraded the looks of their 2 strokes, but they haven't been putting out the best looking bikes lately.

Either way it would be nice to see a redesign

Nah, just ordinary pump gas. I don't know where I would get race gas in the UK but I never felt a need for it either. Tbh my 06 was an absolute rocket ship. Although I think it's high time Yamaha updated their 2 stroke range, the reality is that the 05 to current YZs are still very capable bikes. Even after 6 years and with minimal upgrades the base design is still solid. As ATK said though, if I were getting another one I'd be tempted to get the modern look UFO kit to spruce it up further, just for the fun of it obviously. That's a nice looking bike regardless though.
I heard it has a detonation problem if you choose to run pump gas. Luckily though xnationalwrench mentioned to try octane boosters that I can get...

I've never heard of the YZs having detonation problems either. The Hondas did from 05-07.

The YZ only needs minor updates, like a V-Force reed cage, and updated plastic, That's it. Anything else will only mess it up (including FI). The suspension on the YZ is as good as anything currently offered.

Mine detonated on pump gas, usually under a load on low rpm situations. Wasn't bad but the piston looked like crap when I took it out for the first top end. Ran avgas after that and no more pinging and piston looked really good when I replaced it again.

My 06 yz250 was 1.5 deg. advanced timing from the factory. I chased detonation for 2 years until I finally checked the timing.

I haven't bothered trying on my YZ but I have heard from a few people that changing the reed cage on the 250 was a waste of money. Have you used stock and v force?

I had the Boyesson on my 05. Not sure how much it changed things since I never rode it with the stock reed set up

Does my heart good to hear a Yamaha spokesperson singing the praises of the two stroke. Especially after so many knuckleheads at all levels of the motocross industry have written them off as dead. Strange how professional motocross seems to be the only stronghold of the anti two stroke movement in the offroad end of things.

True. But less and less of us are giving a fuck about what the pro's are doing.

And that is bad for business.

Yamaha noticed.

Here in the real world, we're riding what we can afford, and have the most fun on. To each their own. I'm having more fun on a $1500 125 than I did on a 2011 450 with a monthly payment. That's just me though.

Eventually, it has to come around.

Okay, well, like I said "I haven't heard of YZs having detonation problems . . ." I rode an 05 YZ for about 6 months with absolutely no problems. It was nothing compared to my 07 CR250.

The YZ was totally stock. I've used a v-force reed valve on my 04 yz125 and it ripped. Haven't tried it yet on the 250.
