How does this sound? You get this sand race, we then bring the kid over here for Red Bud, or any supercross. Then average the results.

Really? It won't scare some Russian dude who rarely gets a top 20, but it'll scare Herlings?
9/12/2012 2:40am
Herlings can dish it out if he has to,Barcia might have to watch out, though, its ok going all Bam Bam over there in his class but there are some heavyweights over here that'll knock him into next week

He might not end up in the US series to race those guys in their backyard but the best the US has to offer are racing on his turf, just like last year,at least we'll get to see how he stacks up again,he had a very good Moto last year,he could better that this time

It's not often we get to see the AMA 450 Champ,AMA 250 Champ and runner up go up against the Euros,it should be awesome,it wouldn't go down too well if the boy Herlings smokes them Whistling

DJ: I like the sound of,Cairoli,Roczen and Herlings for Team Euro Smile

Imagine Herlings and Bam Bam going 1-2 out the first turn. Both riders arent affraid to bang bars and take people out. It's going to be absolute carnage Smile

I'm just calling it like it is. Never has a team put their best rider in MX3 for the sake of the team. It doesn't make sense and it's a weak move. That is all.
Just to clear this up- jeffrey is riding in mx3 because he wants to race the track when its at its roughest, and with the shortest break between races. Got to respect that! He wants to prove he's the best sand rider in the world in the toughest possible conditions. (this isnt hearsay- its what he told me himself and his mechanic also talked about it when i was riding with him a couple of weeks ago)

he will be on the 350 too - he practices on that bike a fair bit so no excuses there either. He was 2 seconds a lap faster on the 350 when we rode with him at reusel (when the track was at its roughest at the end of the day)
The final race of the day (mx1/mx3) with dungey, herlings, cairoli, barcia, big ken etc will be absolutely EPIC!!! theres a huge amount of pressure on herlings but i think he will shine and take both moto victories with a big gap (assuming no mechanical failures) it will certainly be very interesting!

the way big ken was looking at lierop i wouldnt count him out of upsetting a few people- he looked like he could have won the 2nd moto if he wanted to, no team orders at the des nations!!!

I don't normally buy into this whole USA vs World mx crap....but.....when was the last time an American won a world championship and an AMA championship? I think Bobby Moore was the last one back in the 90s (and I'm not even sure if he won an ama outdoor title. Maybe the 125 one, I'm not sure).

As for the other riders who have done both.....Langston, Albertyn, Pichon (if you count 125 SX titles)....Reed came close (second in world mx) as did Tortelli (second in AMA to RC)....
I would very much like to see more Americans in Europe...I am old school and still am in awe of earlier Euro riders, Robert, DeCoster, Wiel Ake, Etc....I think big Problem is, Our young riders just don't want to deal with the difference in Cultures...Last one that really had the drive and ambition was Lackey. At least in MX1.

Quote of the day! I agree.. Smile

We shal see what he can do in his own back yard, But get real, put him up against ANY of USA's best in the heat over here and you will see this wonder boy broken. Over here we call these types of things one hit wonders... and what we are serving are home runs...

BTW, I believe he will be beat.
I honestly don't know, if he raced in the US he would be a 5-6 place guy in the 250 class of '12, I think anway.

In Lommel, I want to say Herlings will win, he has a very good chance. But you can never, ever bet against the Americans to show everyone up. It will be exciting to watch though.

The last time a non US rider went 1-1 was Everts in 06. Also the only time during the winning streak a non US rider has gone 1-1. I think it's highly unlikely Herlings sweeps his motos. A lot of people are getting caught up in this hype of dominating in the sand at the last GP. Remember that Dungey, Cairoli, and Barcia are very fast in the sand too. I think Herlings will win the 2nd moto, but not the 3rd. If he goes out there and beats Dungey, Cairoli, and Barcia, then I'll stand corrected.

Nobody (except some Brits) talks about big Ken's sand riding talent but that will change during the MXoN weekend.
On the other hand, he will need a good start in both motos.

By the way. I think Big Ken is going to send Barcia into the Cafe' (just besides track) just to make a statement and tell him to buy a pepsi with a straw and a order beer for himself after the race. He sometimes do that.Whistling

big ken was hauling ass at lierop and im convinced he could have won that 2nd moto if he wanted to (team orders?)

he seemed to he reeling cairoli in then letting him go- no team orders at the nations. If ken gets a start then he can beat anyone in the sand

....and he's not afraid to bang bars!

How´s ken´s fitness? I remember that was always his main issue. He has great speed in the rough sand no doubt.

Awesome. Id love to see it. As it is, he is a very, very fast young man who is a beast in sand. Sand likes riders who grow up on it. Its why old men and locals can come and qualify or place well at places like Southwick and no other races during the year. Its the least impressive place to qualify for a national (local knowledge beats skill). Herlings may well destroy them all, my point is just that with the race being on the track that it is, we might as well have him come race a supercross and average out the results for the two races. Because honestly, it says nothing of Herlings other then he is great on his type of track and not so much on a different style. That was also why I threw in Redbud. Beat the piss out of everyone at Red Bud (or a similar track in Europe) and then people can keep calling him the new Jesus. Otherwise, he is just a very good racer who happens to be the second coming while in deep sand. My feeling is he wins in style in the sand, but would lose to the Americans on literally any other style of track in the world. So I hope he enjoys his day.

Yeah, pretty much Agree with you.

But he's fast on hardpack as well. If he would ride this years nationals, I would rate him about the speed of Roczen/Musquin.
Once he spots sandberms (aka southwick), he's insane fast.

Long story short.
- Herlings will be the fastest rider in Lommel.
- The US have the best Team and will win ( if nothing bad happens )
- It going to be the tuffest MXoN in years for the US.
- Of course everbody wants to see the US Team fail, after the domitaion the las past years.
- i don´t like Herlings ... but i will cheer for him when he laps Barcia and Dungey
- Southwick is not even close to an GP Sandtrack ...
- Herlings would be only a top ten rider in the us Nationals ( if not on sand )

All good Flanerd, Except nobody but a couple of Americans with English comprehension dificulties have said that Herlings is the fastest 250F rider in the world. Lots have said about his outstanding talents in sand, but that's it. No super claims about every surface, no predictions that he'll wipe the floor with anybody anywhere. So why the big reaction from so many here on Vital?

PS Very few, apart from a (large) handfull of Germans liked M. Schuemacher much but only idiots would ever have denied his unbelieveable talents, whilst at Ferrarl and before.

As far as riding in the AMA goes, I'd be supprised if any Europeans ever, really get to be comfortable and perform at their best in the heat and humidity that feature at so many AMA National races. It's just alien to us and I personally wouldn't want to run even ten yards in that.

i think you're mistaking herlings 'fans' for people that have actually seen him ride in the sand! theres alot of people that cant stand the kid but cant help but admire his sand riding skills!

roczen is very good in the sand (so is marvin by the way) but he has never beaten jeffrey in the sand (nobody has taken a moto off him in the sand since he turned pro at 15 years of age)

if you had been at valkenswaard and seen just how much faster jeffrey was than roczen (sure it was something like 4 seconds a lap) then you wouldnt be saying people are underestimating roczen!! he absolutely destroyed him! same at lommel- herlings was riding with 2 broken ribs and still smoked ken!
herlings is even faster in the sand this year (according to cairoli) than he was last year!!

personally i think ken will win the mx2 class (marvin 2nd) but i dont expect either of them to even get a sniff at herlings!

in my opinion cairoli is the only one that might be able to stay with him for a bit- but after going to lierop a couple of weeks ago i have my doubts about that too! cairoli is very fast in the sand but was making alot of mistakes, herlings was just pounding out lap after lap of perfection! it was amazing to watch. Cairoli looks alot more on the edge riding at speed in the sand- herlings is so fluid and smooth, its like its 2nd nature to him.

im interested to see how dungey does- i think his style will suit lommel very well and he will adapt the best out of the US team. It would be cool to see a battle between herlings, big ken, cairoli, barcia and dungey in the final moto of the day! no crashes just good racing

Herlings is a lot faster than you think on other tracks. Show him a bit more respect. He is the World Champion, and most of the races were not in sand. He beat RV on a 350 in a moto last year on hard pack (and Baggett), so already you have been proven wrong.

I think he would be on the same level as the Americans on other tracks too as he showed in France. They could beat him and he could beat them.

He just beat Searle in Italy by over 20 seconds on a rock hard track, and Searle is flying this year.

Have Baggett come and race Herlings in the GPs next year then, if you think American's are so superior on other tracks. Yet again it's all about thinking Americans are superior with you guys without any proof, and trying to take away credit from Herlings at what he is good at by saying it doesn't really count because Americans would beat him on any other track, it is so disrespectful.

I would say Lommel and Lierop are some of the most difficult tracks in the world, if you can win there it says everything about your bike skills, it actually highlights just how good they are.

Herlings would love Red Bud, it's pretty soft terrain too. The heat would be more of a problem, but that is nothing to do with speed, more accllimatisation. He is just as good as the top Americans.

As for Dungey, he will be really really fast, and I don't think Herlings will have it all his own way. Barcia and Baggett will be quick too, they are getting plenty of time to ride in the sand so they will be totally comfortable in it.

2stokerider - Roczen could almost match Herlings best lap times last year, but Herlings usually ended up winning each moto by 10-30 seconds. Herlings IS probably better this year though and Roczen has missed a year of sand practice.

All this talk of Herlings will do this, or Herlings will do that is jumping the gun I think... he's got to get through this weekend in Germany unscathed first and anything could go wrong on the day! It usually does.

Don't forget that Herlings has beat Roczen in the sand. Everts said Herlings was the fastest sand rider in the world, and that guys knows his stuff.

I agree with you though, all those guys will be super fast too, as will De Dycker. I think everyone has seen how fast Herlings can go in the sand, but I am not sure everyone has seen how fast Cairoli can go in it. I think we are about to find out, because he will be giving it everything so that Herlings doesn't beat him.

Herlings times in the MX3 quali heat will be interesting too compared to Dungey and Cairoli who will have raced the much smoother first moto.

LIke Jamma says anything can happen, Herlings is definitely not a shoe in to win. The other guys will be fast, and Herlings has to avoid the crashes and injuries, and cope with huge pressure.

Herling had an 2:00 Min lead over the rest of the Field ... 2:00 Min .... he was racing 4-9 Sec. per lap as the rest of the MX2 and MX1 including Cairoli ... he is the fastest Sand rider on an GP Style sand track !! ...

valkenswaard he won easily (even in the race he crashed in)

I don't know if Jeffrey would ever read this stuff but I think it's been over talked way too much. Not pointing fingers - as MX fans we're clearly all a little bit over excited by the prospect of an incoming Des Nations. But at this rate the pressure on the poor lad will be unbelievable.

I think he'll win too but there are no guarantees, it's one race, one weekend and a lot can either go very right or horribly wrong depending on the day. It's true Jeffrey destroyed Lierop but remember the MXDN is not being held at Lierop, it's being held at Lommel. And the last time JH and KR raced there, Roczen wasn't a million miles off. Granted both tracks are deep sand and I think Herlings has improved this year but only time will tell... dammit, now I'm doing it again! Bottom line is the race and how it goes on the day. Nuff said.
