But Dungey took home 2 moto wins, the overall, and the Championship plate. JSE took a ride on the Mule.

You gotta be in it to win it and you gotta finish to earn points. Maybe JSE should go ride World Enduro. It is basically short sprints. It might his cup of tea. I bet KTM would love to have him in Europe.

That could have been one brutal crash. Good thing he was able to ride it out as long as he did.

The line he was taking was INSANE...no one else was doing it that moto. The track was so rutted up, making it lots easier to cross rut.

Glad you guys seem to have made my topic one of the most popular on here...Wink

I'm blown away every time James' bike comes up as a reason why he augered himself into the ground, again.

I'm pretty sure he has done this stuff on yellow, blue, and green.

I'm surprised not a lot of people talk about JS7 dropping Aldon as a factor in JS7 not being the same since, coincidentally, the new Yamaha. After that wild crash in Phoenix where he broke his wrist (just when the new Yamaha was brand new), he only raced 'Dilla that year and that was it for him working with Aldon. From that point on, Stewart has not been the same and has been crashing FAR more than ever before.

Look, I know Stewart is fit enough to run the pace of Dungey for entire motos (we saw it at Hangtown & Freestone), but there's a fine line between "fit-enough" and "more-than-fit-enough". I think he needs more strength and fitness to control the bike and stop from crashing so much. The bar has been raised by Dungey and RV, and if Stewart wants to ride at those speeds, for the entire duration of the race, with how fast the bikes are these days... I think that little bit extra strength would be saving him from all these crashes during races. He just looks so spent every time he falls over, and it's clear he tries to do as minimal training as possible, at least that's the impression I've gotten over the years.

I think youve made some good points but theres a much stronger correlation to the dropping iof larry brooks and his performance.

Yes, James was only 1/2 a second slower than Dungey coasting to an early title clinch. And james crashed trying run Ryan's paceWink

See, it's easy to spin this stuff. Big deal.

Stats tell the story.

I just watched the crash again on Youtube, it's almost comical how much faster Stewart hit that section than Dungey and Alessi. It's like someone just fired him out of a cannon and he's trying to save it so he can get back to riding at a normal pace.

Reminds of the local C class with riders totally pumped on adrenaline riding WAY over their heads and lawn darting themselves. I really don't know why Stewart can't learn such a simple lesson after all these years...

I have sat at the new table every year since 2008, when they first put it in, which is right across from that section... In 2010 and this year (even though I wasnt there this year) he has been so much faster than anyone else I have seen ride that section including RV last year. He just flies in sections like that, but there is a risk and we saw what happened, he messed up somehow that one lap.

Honestly, I called it, I told my bro Stewart was going to go down in that section when I saw he was doubling the biggest jump in that section which is significantly faster, but also very risky. Honestly, Stewart just wants to win so he goes for it, he could be conservative, but thats not in his nature. He was close to Alessi and Dungey and he wanted to make up time so he kept going for it there. His decision, and I respect him for that...I would have rather seen him keep it upright whether that meant not doing that section like that or just not messing up, but unfortunately that didnt happen. I wanted to see him race Dungey straight up.

Once again, leaving the gate with everyone else is "straight up" and we saw straight up at the beginning of the season.

Stewart rides the same tracks and same bikes as everyone else that finishes a race and ends up on the podium.

I like how everyone is claiming it is James' fault, not Yamaha's. We ALL can agree that he looks way better on the Suzuki. It is really clear that the Yamaha wasn't in James' favor.

Now, yes, he did crash by his own merit yesterday. Everyone on that track was taking huge risks to win. That track was f*cking gnar bro's. Seriously though, that was some rutted, jacked up straights at Unadilla yesterday. Yeah, James crashed. So did Dungey, Byrne, Weimer, and many more. That track was tough.

I know I don't ride or do anything at James/Dungey'Villopoto levels, but coming back after a long break is tough. Look, I hadn't played basketball in 5+ years. I recently decided to go play some pickup games at my local 24HR Fitness. Without any thought process, my competitiveness took over and I was diving all over the place like I was playing in the NBA Finals. I didn't even think about it, my body took over. It jumped right back into the mindset from yesteryear. I didn't severely injure myself, but I did end up with a tore up neck, a gym floor burn down the side of my leg, all for a W in a pickup game at the gym. I HATE losing. I may not win, but I DESPISE losing at any level on competition.

I am sure James is the same way. Actually, it is probably much, much worse for him. To take time off and try to go for the win on the gnarliest track of the season.... I can respect that. In a long and round-a-bout way, I have experienced the same kind of woes. Can we all just cut him some slack?
Which planet are you on, that Suzuki was all over the track like a rash, Millsaps bike was smoother, and that aint no lie!

Yea, sure maybe the dude can train harder or whatever. Shit I dunno maybe the dude trains harder than RC used to, but from my experience when I used to train non stop all the time for basketball (and moto) it gets to the point where you just get burned the fk out. I remeber watching a video of RC training (the one that shows him on his yellow bike in the gym and also shows him joggin w/ aldon down the road) RC said "Yea I think I have a few more hard years of this stuff before I hang my boots up." That was in 2005, he retired in 07... Why I'm not sure. Maybe he got burned out, maybe he didn't wanna fend off bubba anymore. Who knows. He started his career in 97, thats 10 years.

Bubba could easily walk away from the sport today and say he got burned out like RC did and still be known as "The fastest man ever to ride a bike" He could do what MC did and race a few seasons or more getting 10th place and still keep that title, but it seems to me like he would rather have complete fun with it like Dowd and Windham do.

That's longevity. I think bubba knows what works for him, and how still have fun with it. It seems like the guys that never find the balance of having fun with it and taking it as a "Job" instead lose focus on why they ever rode in the first place and get tired of it. Whatever works for the kid I guess.

Dungey was in Championship mode, he gained nothing by even trying to beat Stewart. Clearly Stewart's blazing fast speed is impressive but so are his wrecks. Also why is it he's always hurting his hands/wrist, are the damn things are made of glass?

Here's to Mr. James Stewart;

I was one of the people that was saying the Yamaha wasn't helping, but not the cause.. Wonder if it is something to do with how James sets up a bike or rides, he still has just that fraction more speed than the others it seems, but goddam, he crashes, a lot.
Crush, you have hit the nail on the head... James is either flying or eating shit and it is a lot more of the latter these days. Blaming the bike and vilifying the hell out of a different design because James wasn't winning consistently was just a bad joke. As much as I like James and have always cheered for him I fear that he may be done mentally. At this point he has so much to loose and so little to gain that it has to be awfully tough to convince yourself to keep going out there with a fear of losing and a fear of crashing both lurking in the back of your mind. I hope he can get it together.

ok, let me rephrase that... I wanted to see if Stewart could catch and pass Dungey, not saying he cant, but Id like to see them duke it out again.

Vital must be the only racing fan's site where racers get ragged on for racing. Get it through your thick skull dude, James is a racer! He races to go fast and hopefully faster than everyone else on the track. If that is not what he's doing, he ain't interested. He was at Dilla to race, to try and make it fun for Dungey, Alessi and the fans by making a race out of it. To compare him to some C class rider is plain fucking stupid and shows that you are just trying to be a pathetic a-hole. How many of those C classers do you know that have a house full of championships from all levels of racing and have people lined up to get their autographs. James is going to try and race when he shows up to races, he isn't going to coast around and play it safe, he can't help it, he's wired to race.

What lesson is it that you want him to learn? that he can coast around and not challenge the other riders and himself and gain fans like you? why would he want a fan like you?

You got a point. If JSE is only interested in individual wins, on a per moto basis, i guess his system works, go flat out until you implode. If you're chasing titles, I think his system is flawed. It's been a while since JSE notched a title.

Are you sure he's a RACER and not an entertainer?

I feel bad for James and that crash could have happened to anybody. He looked like he was going faster then the other guy's also.
The thing that I think is funny is all the clowns that make fun of him or talk trash about him. He could fall off his bike every lap of the race and still beat just about anybody on this board. Laughing

I'm sure his contract has that inclusion.

Huck a buck? If he were superstitious he'd lost the GoPro as well, seems luck hasn't been so good since he started wearing that thing

I'm not ragging on him for racing, but he's riding over his head. He had plenty of time left to catch Dungey he didn't have to make up 4 seconds in one lap. A great racer would understand that. Riding over your head and crashing doesn't make you a great racer, it makes you a crasher. So yes, it reminds me of the C class riders that panic that they're at the back of the pack in their first race and ride WAY too fast until they wad up.

You seem to think that riding over your head and crashing again and again is some kind of 'badge of honour'. This is pro racing, not a Tom Cruise movie.
