2002 YZ 250 for $1,300. Took it out that afternoon. The motor was strong, but the suspension, front wheel bearings, and plastic need attention. It has a new top and bottom end. It has a 50 tooth sprocket but I think I need a 51. Had a hard time pulling 2nd out of corners. What do you YZ guys think about gearing? I'm typically a Pro Circuit buyer but is that the best for this bike?

Go STR for engine mods, Here, nobody will beat it. Then for a pipe, ask him whats best, I think I remember hearing him saying the stock silencer was the best, tell him Nate Page sent you. But if he says it does not matter go with FMF or Pro-Circuit, I personally would go with FMF though, and for suspension I would go with Factory Connection, but do what you want with that! Smile

I had the exact same bike. Tried all FMF pipes, but the Pro-circuit was best by far. Also, get the V-force reed cage. Bike will rip after that. I also had porting and head work, which made it a monster. I should have never got rid of it,

I've heard the stock pipe is unbeatable on those bikes, but take it with a grain of salt.

I still have that same bike.
Had a PC pipe on it but went back to stock.
Just felt better in the sand.
Kept the gearing stock also.

Go to an FMF SST pipe and an 8oz flywheel. it will feel like a 250F but feel lighter and better yet sound killer.

Coincidently I inherited an 03 hammered YZ250 for free. It is all roached. I am going through the entire thing. Can't wait to ride it. I am seeing more and more of this stuff going on.

very good base to start with. FMF SST pipe and a V Force intake + jetting is all it will need to holeshot 450's.

My fave is the FMF Gnarly pipe with stock silencer, a short-shifters delight you won't have any problems pulling second gear. SST gave up too much bottom for me. Stock gearing, Vforce, tighten up squish, port clean-up and case matching will make it stupid.

Sure appears that way. Just a year or two ago there would be a whole flock of 4 stroke lovers quick to attack a comment like that. Not so much today. I think everyone has grown a little weary of the high cost of admission. Hard to go wrong on a free 2 stroke 250! The steel frame YZ's are some good looking bikes too.

Digging the blue Macsimizer. I have the same one but in the triple bank version. Those things have skyrocketed in price over the last ten years. Always wanted to get the top box for mine but when it finally became available it was nearly two grand more than I had tied up in the bottom box.

ESR is working on a 325cc bolt on power valve cyl kit for these.
Should be a 450 4 poke killer!!!!!! It is listed on their website but you should call and talk to them rather then just buy it now on the website.

There is tons of info in the Yamaha 2-stroke forum on Thumpertalk. Plenty of guys on there that have been tinkering with these bikes for years and have tried just about everything.

As for Pipes, most do not like the PC. Many love the stock pipe and I think it is the 05 stock pipe that seems to work best but is hard to find. The FMF fatty is similar to stock and strong everywhere. I have the Factory Fatty and FMF shorty silencer on mine. Love it.

Many seem to think the SST pipe is difficult to jet correctly and causes the bike to run lean on top. Some have said they have fried pistons because of this.

Many folks love the RB designs head mod. He basically tightens the squish and cc's the bowl properly for your fuel.

I have the N3CJ needle in mine. 1/2 clip leaner than the stock N3EJ and cleaned it up just perfectly. Lots of guys are running stupid lean jetting like 42 pilot and 168 main but mine rips with the stock 50 pilot and 178 main, even at 4,500 feet. Might be because I run 32:1 where lots of guys run 40:1 or 50:1.

They are known to have detonation probs when on pump fuel or with lean jetting. There is a lot of info on TT about setting your timing properly to prevent this.

I run Maxima Super-M. I suggest avoiding castor oils as they are too gummy and clog up the powervalve. They also rot away all the brass in your carb if you let it sit in the bowl.

I have the stock 14/50 gearing and pulling 2nd out of corners in no prob. I can even use 3rd and a little stab of clutch if the corner is not too tight/deep.

Consider putting the 06+ SSS forks and 18mm shock on if you can find them cheap on ebay. Far superior suspension.

That's what I had on mine (a 99) It was a very good combo. Tons of torque.

I have no detonation with mine either but I run 100 octane "race" gas from the pump.

It seems if you get the jetting a little lean and/or the timing advanced that is when you will have the detonation. Lots of guys say the RB head mod cured their detonation and helped clean up the jetting and exhaust spooge problems.

I have a feeling that bike has low hours? Stock graphics and seems to have stock rear sprocket still? Less than 30 h? Congrats!

I bought an tried every pipe for this bike. A DEP pipe and P.C. Silencer was my favorite back then. It pulled smoothly from the bottom to the top without an aggressive hit. Now I would probably like the P.C. Pipe because I like the bike to hit hard. It still pulls from the bottom to the top. The FMF fatty is my favorite for my KTM 250 but on the YZ I felt th fmf pipes either had no overev or not enough bottom for MX. For woods the gnarly pipe is the way to go.

Google dirt rider magazine YZ250 pipe shootout. They pick the DEP as well.

On my 05 (same motor) I was a big big fan of the Factory Fatty pipe and shorty silencer. I never had problems pulling 2nd gear starts, or pulling 2nd or 3rd gear out of most corners with a quick slap of the clutch. Also, that seems like a really big rear sprocket. For some reason I think mine had a 48 on it stock...

I was having a hard time pulling 2nd out of corners without abusing the clutch. But it could be a number of things. The timing could be off? I'm going to pull the top-end off this week and check the power valve as the guy I got it from just rode it in the woods and a lot of goop was oozing out of the exhaust.

Magnificant looking bikes there, outstanding. Cool

You got that right Joe. Most of us have accepted reality----that we go just as fast on a '02 YZ250 as we'd go on a '12 KTM 450 Dungey Replica ( which I'd love to have, even though I am not a 4t guy ) ---- and for a ton less----- it'a all about getting out and having fun.

Will 2006 YZ 250 SST suspension bolt on my 2002 YZ 250? I know I may need triple clamps, but other then that should they fit?
