No, because your expectations go up as you get faster, so when you don't ride well on a particular day, you get pissed of at yourself, which can kinda ruin the day.

Don't get me wrong, a bad day riding beats no riding at all, but when you are a beginner, all days are great.

Every person's statement on here is true. Each person decides what's fun for them. This sport is different than other ones, that you play in high school, and never play again. You can become addicted to it. My son started riding at 12. Won everything he could at our district, went to Loretta after 2 years. It was huge fun, for him and us, and cost a lot of money. But now, he's about to graduate college, and still can't resist getting on those bikes. Hasn't raced in 4 years, but has to ride. YZ125, and RM250 now. He has more fun riding those things than you can imagine. The fun is in your mind. Doesn't matter how fast you go. Guys at our old club have been riding for years. None of them fast, but they just like to ride. Good exercise and good fun with your friends. Everyone enjoys it at their own level. I will add one comment about motocross racing, not fun, but wonderful. I know of no other sport , that your competitors, and even people you have never met, will come to help you, and offer you anything you need, when something bad happens. It's fun, at what ever level you choose to take it.

When/where did I ever say that?

Am I a fan of the displacement rules? No.

Am I a fan of the cost of racing a 250F in what used to be the 125cc class? No.

Am I a fan of the carnage that ensues when a 250F scatters and the costs to repair it? No.

Am I a fan of the fact that the powers that be sailed the 125cc class down Shit Creek without a paddle? No.

Am I a fan of revving the piss out of a 13,500 rpm 250F? You betcha'.Wink
You probably didn't ever say it - I just assumed that was the case from all the anti 4-stroke stuff you post. For the record, I feel the same way as you about each of those points.

Apologies for taking this thread through a detour.

Moto dosn't get more fun the faster you get, It gets more fun the better SHAPE you get in - but you'll end up going faster.

I'm not talking the shape of a pear either.

For me it got a lot more fun when I stopped giving a fuck about winning stupid local races that nobody even gives a fuck about anyway. When I was in my early twenties, if there was someone at the local track faster than me, or hitting a new jump I wasn't or before I did, it ate me up. Once I hit about 28 I stopped giving a fuck and stopped racing and started to really just enjoy going out and riding. Just the flow of the track hitting jumps and enjoying time with my son and friends. AND A COLD BEER AFTER haha. I think it gets better with age. But not to old I guess! I got a riding buddy in his mid 50's and he said "when you get this age, it really does start to become a spectator sport" Grinning

Riding isn't any funner as you get faster, but it is funner as you get better. Track riding to me is track riding, the fast guys are having no more fun then a beginner.

But as i got better and was able to do some insane cliff climbing and play riding stuff, it was funner.

I've come and gone, maybe 3 times. 70's, 80's, 90's.

Each time, the 3rd year, just when it's all coming together, boredom, burnout, whatever sets in.

It's like, man, I don't feel like killing the whole weekend to run 4 -15 minute motos on Sunday.

Na, for me, it get's worser as I get better...........

valid point but I don't think that is his question. Take all the other variables out and just think about the question. If you could go faster, would you have more fun? I think I would. I would love to hit jumps that I don't hit now. Nothing worse than coming up to a jump knowing that you're not going to do it but the guy behind you is. I raced +25 this past weekend. I am almost 46. There was nothing Fun about getting smoked by kids almost young enough to be my son. However, the +40 class was much more fun because I was up front and racing for the win. I could care less about a plastic trophy, but the competitor in me has more fun when I am racing up front, but that's just me.......

by the way, I sat around for 12+ hrs to ride 20 laps. I haven't raced in 2 yrs due to injury and work stuff. It was a blast and I remembered how much I loved the excitement and thrill of a gate drop, but it is a long ass day and gets longer as I get older....

I guess this theory is flawed unless your name is RC and you're winning everything. Everything is relative and humans always want more. More, more, more... Look at how many guys in the pro ranks are fast as shit but have miserable weekends each week..

I think progression is fun, even if you're not taking it serious and they are baby steps. Also think moto is the most fun when you know you tried your absolute best. You don't need to be Justin Barcia to get that feeling and even if to most people, you may look shit or slow or average, as long as in your head when you ride back to the van you know you gave it everything.... That feeling is awesome. A satisfying day of moto is so good for your mental health. haha

The most fun i had on a bike was when... i switched to enduro ! And some heavy hitters in MX turned top pro enduro riders told me the same. Not having to worry about the start anymore is so releiving.

That and even today's youngest vet has roots to the 2 smoke. Hoppin back on one in the later years is as close to the same feeling as hopping on that dime they took to prom.

Oh and when you're 11-20 years old doing the am nat/ pro am / tryin to turn pro scene: "there is nothing fun about motocross, bro. " It's a roller coaster life of stress! Some got it, others can't get a grasp on the stress.

I started riding at age 11. It was a lot of fun just riding with my buddies wherever we could get away with it. It stayed fun just like that up until about my late 20's which was about my peak for speed and fitness, and for some reason I started losing interest in going riding, and it just stopped. I agree that I think I was having the most fun when I was in the best shape. I NEVER raced during all of those years, and here is why. I went to a few local races to watch, and it didn't seem like to fun to stand around most of the day and only get to ride a couple of times for like 15 minutes. When I went riding with my buddies, we would ride for hours on end, sometimes all day until it got too dark to see. Good times. Good memories.

BINGO!
Back when I got into riding 9 years ago I bought a CR250 and I couldn't even go a half a lap without getting tired and armpump. I just kept riding and riding and finally I was like this is bullshit. I quit smoking and started running and 8 months later I lined up on the gate at a local race and the next 3 years of riding was a blast. Got better and better and better. Pretty much quit riding as much about 5 years ago though and in bad shape again but that was some great times there. I lived for riding and racing.

it was deffenitely more fun when i was winning but I did put more pressure on myself to do well. every race I'd look at the sheets to see who I would have to battle with now after 9 concussions, 4 knee surgeries, a collarbone surgery, hand and wrist surgery, multiple broken fingers and ribs Fun for me is finishing the race without a soil sample.

the entire day is fun, hanging with friends, busting balls, comparing "bling"on bikes and watching great racing. It's all part of having fun.

being in shape helps but you gotta know how to ride and know your limitations

I started riding at 11, and racing at 12. I progressed quite quickly and by the time I was 14 or 15 I was battling with guys who'd been riding since 5 or 6. I think that was the most fun time for me. I was the underdog kinda? And each weekend I'd catch up a little bit more. That was a really exciting time.

In contrast, at 17 I went into the year as a contender for a national championship (in Ireland... It's kind of a big fish/small pond situation Tongue ) and I broke 3 wrists in 6 months. 1 in the summer and then 2 together in the winter. The next year I wanted to win it so bad, and it was my last year in the youth class, so I put myself under loads of pressure. In the end I came up just short in just about everything. My fitness was just a bit off, my speed was just a bit off, my starts and my luck were just a bit off. The most fun I had that year was in the last moto of the last race when I had been resigned to 2nd in the championship.

Since then, my parents split, my dad lost his job, I got into college and my priorities have had to change. Now what I most look forward to is just being on the bike. When I was racing, the longest I'd ever be off the bike would be 2 weeks, and I'd hate it. Now it could be 2 or 3 months before I get out. But when I do, it's much more rewarding. There's much more satisfaction in getting that rut just right, or drifting around a slick flat corner perfectly than there is in being 2 tenths of a second faster than the other guy.

Looking back, I'd say for me, the fun is in racing in the midpack where there's no pressure, or getting that unexpected good result, mostly for the same reason.

if the fun factors ever lost, stop riding for a few months and wait until you're ready to kill yourself because its all you can think about. I've been hurt a lot, broken way to many bones, and blew both my knees out. The faster you get the more fun it becomes, because like others have said you learn more and the guys who you envied out on the track railing corners and blowin past you dont seem so fast anymore. Personally, the most fun I've ever had was racing my brother at a local pro race. It was a nice gauge to see where i stood with the work i put in. Been all moto since the age of 5, weekend after weekend, and one amateur national after the next. I still love the shit out of it and the feeling i get from throwing my leg over a bike.
