I would consider Paul Carpenter faster than an above average amateur , he won the canadian national championship and was a top ten supercross guy.

I don't know what he is up to these days, but I do know that I have one of his 08 Team Atomic bikes that I still currently ride. Well, in this pic my grease monkey kid is riding it. haha.

It seems like every so often there are threads like this. It friggin sucks how fast this sport can chew you up and spit you out! I was thinking of a list of such naturally talented riders that never got to show there true professional potential due to injuries or other reasons. This list of riders is just off the top of my head that people may forget about! I looked up to these guys when i was little and raced against some at the amateur nationals back in the day.

wow, buckelew was one of those mini prodigies that never came CLOSE to transferring his dominance to pro racing....

he was a crusher on 80s back in the day though, wonder how that turned out.

Paul is working construction. Had dinner with him around Christmas he is doing very well for him self. Still a funny guy with lots of stories. Might see him walking around Dilla this year.

Lance lives up here in the Pacific NW. Only thing I know is that he is developing a track at a race car track just south of Seattle. I can't wait to ride it, pretty sure it will be finished later this summer.

On an aside, I saw him riding at a local national-style track last year, he was riding a late 90's KX250 or 500 and was just ripping. Guy was showing everyone the fast way around the track, for sure.

Also heard he got honored at the Seattle SX this year, don't know what for as I wasn't there.

Cody Cooper moved back to New Zealand at the end of the 2009 season. He has been riding a Suzuki in the Australian and New Zealand nationals since then.

Cody had raced successfully in Aussie for quite a few years before he went to the USA at the end of 2007, so he didn't really come from nowhere.

Cooper is racing for Suzuki in Australia and New Zealand, finished the New Zealand Nationals in third behind Townley and Coppins, and is currently sitting 5th after 7 rounds of the Australian Championship

Currently behind
Josh Coppins
Todd Waters
Brad Anderson
Lawson Bopping

and just in front of Jake Moss and Jay Marmont

Few ex AMA and GP riders in that list!

I believe. Darcy had cancer a few years ago and is in remission. Could be wrong though.

Haha. I tried to find the One Punch wrestling promo video before, but it appears to have been taken down. That is a shame, because it was hilarious.

i remember tyler was doing pretty good in 2004 on the tommy hilfiger backed RM250...

moto is has a high turn over rate....i remember seeing those names and its crazy to think they're no longer racing at that level.

ben riddle and ryan mills have run into trouble with the law..its sad because at one time they had the world by the balls

justin buckelew..he won a race or two on a YoT YZ125 and I think he had a ride with mitch @ one point but injuries haunted him..

never saw him ride but mitch payton said bobby bonds was "an honest to god bullet" but he kept getting hurt.

that list makes me appreciate guys like kevin windham and john dowd/mike brown even more..its says ALOT about your character and overall toughness to still stay with it.
7/25/2012 10:33pm
Bobby bonds was/is an absolute bullet! Even today that guy can throw down some impressive times, it is too bad grant langston cut him off in 01' we never really got to see what bobby could do.
