Renthal Kevlar Grips

Edited Date/Time 5/21/2013 4:03pm
I got a set of Kevlar Grips and wire tired them on, problem was the wire tie went right through the kevlar portion and ruined the grip, I was lucky enough to have Renthal replace them to me for free, is anyone else having that same problem, does anyone else wire tie these grips in the grip area?

I wire tie mine everytime, never an issue. What do you mean by them being ruined?

Your doing it wrong. I won't use any other grip and have never had a problem. The wire will cut through the top layer a bit but if your cutting through the kevlar, your definitly doing it wrong. I've worn the last two pairs down to the bar after about 6 months before I had to repace them. Use the Rentahl glue and they won't budge.

My first guess is that you had the safety wire way too tight.

I've never had a single problem.

Renthal deserves a thumbs up on their customer service for being understanding enough to replace them.

Yes Brad over there is the man at Renthal. I used the renthal grip glue and put them on, then I wire tied them double around on the inside of the grip, about 1 inch out and 2 inches out after that, just like you see on pros grips. I must have gone too tight cause once I twisted it and tucked the twist on the bottom of the grip an hour later the wire broke through the kevlar compound and was down to the rubber, these grips seem like they have kevlar outer and rubber inner.

I learned a really cool trick for putting grips on anout 2 years ago. Clean your bar ends with solvent, wrap the bar ends with electrical tape (just one layer around), pour gas inside of the grip, immediately pour out the gas, slide grip onto bar, let it sit for 24 hrs. The grip will be locked on, NO WIRE NEEDED. It might sound weird but it works really well. I am a death grip rider and the grips never move on me.

I liked the sets that I've had. They wear like iron, just don't get them wet!

I would always do the same thing, but I would usually have the electrical tape overlapping the prior layer. Gave the grip a slightly bigger diameter it seemed

For what its worth, the grip manufacturers recommend you don't use solvents (I think anyway). If it does "melt" them to the bars, are they really hard to get off once they have worn out?
I normally use the Renthal dual compound grips. I use Renthal grip glue and also wire them. I have never had an issue with the wire cutting through.

That sounds like the old cheap-hairspray trick we used to do with our grips on our BMX bikes. Worked great til they got wet and the hairsrpay lost its sticky.

Do your grips still stick when you ride in the wet?

And where are you doing the electrical tape? Just at the end of the bar or the whole length of the grip? What is it's purpose?

My best mate showed me a great way, spray any sort of spray can paint any colour doesn't matter into the grip then slip it straight on. I've never had a problem and I'm a grip killer. Thanks Col

Don't single loop the saftey wire, I always double loop it and it holds the grip on tight but doesn't cut the grip.

I do this sometimes, and it works great. If i dont do that, I use "goop" which is like an all purpose adhesive that you can get at any auto store, or wal-mart, and its very cheap. I never wire my grips and never have had a problem whether the conditions be dry or wet and I too am an "over-gripper"

I love my kevlar grips. Won't use anything else. I like to use automotive weather strip adhesive and wire them just in case.

Bingo! Single wire, too tight = cut grip.

You're lucky Renthal replaced them for a customer caused defect.
That's pretty amazing customer service. I'd say you owe them
some brand loyalty.

I simply use a shot of spray paint into each grip, mount and then safety wire in three spots, never had a grip slip in my life...

yes the rubber/silicone on deft gloves is gone after a couple rides and not much longer the gloves have holes in them.
