While watching Stewart ride at High-Point I couldn't help noticing that there are a few things he actually does BETTER when he's holding back...

1. He ACTUALLY was taking the time to figure each rider out & find a Smart-Calculated way around them (kinda like Dungey does...sometimes to a fault).

2. He WAS NOT Banzai-ing ANYTHING...he was RIDING the track and made short little "Bursts of Bubba" as needed to get by someone.

3. He still makes some amazing moves; he's just keeping it toned down and surviving the moto. Obviously "Uncomfortable"; yet, he can run with these guys while riding at what appears to be 85-90%...DAMN!

4. It doesn't seem like he's EVER spent this much time watching the likes of Izzi, Tickle, Short, Metty...and the rest of the pack ...he may actually be learning that he can "Control the Intensity" and get to the front a little more...(see #5)

5. Carefully. This kinda flies in the Face of what Big James is all about: however, he really does need to learn to race Smarter as time goes on (that's jus' my Opinion).

6. Smooth, Calculated, PATIENTLY...Passing. I don't think I've EVER seen him that Patient. Ever.

Imagine a JS7 w/ a little bit of the RD5 "Technique"...? There can be an upside to having to slow-down and focus on what's going on around you. You might just spend a little more time with the rubber-side down.

I'm jus' hoping...

Iam super glad stewie is on the track for the outdoors, even more stoked he was kicking ass !!! Injuries are part of the ball game. Some are willing to ride through them and get 5th, some are not

Sorry and just another point of view,

BUT I love watching Stewart because of his wildness.

I wish he still rode like 125 days.

FOR ME what you describe is not Motocross, At all.

Really?

I kinda get the feeling you're describing FMX...

Winning a Title isn't just about "Who's the Fastest": It's a combination of the Fastest, the most Calculated, The Luckiest, the Most Prepared, Obviously the Quality of the Equipment...and...

Strategy.

If you want to argue with the Idea about "Strategy", go see Roger...he'll fill you in.

How has Dungey managed to ALWAYS be "In it"?

In my book, you're either injured our you're hurt. If you can get a top 5 in a 450 national, well... Who cares if he gets 15th, either way the cameras are going to be on him the entire time giving his sponsors the exposure the pay for.

Some people can't grasp the fact that when a team hires you.....the main goal and hope for the rider is "The championship". That is the one main goal for every rider on that gate ( I'm speaking top tier rider )......being the fastest rider on the track one weekend then taking a DNF the next........the record books could care less. The goal is the title and nothing less. Sure some riders are fun to watch.....but when they miss 1/2 the races in their career due to injuries.....what good did it do? Stewart has won a lot of championships....but was capable of many more if he would of just toned it back a little.

TG nailed it in his first post.

Riding with a bum throttle wrist is tough and probably stupid. Hard enough to hold on to a 450 with two good arms. Plus that wrist has been injured seriously before on several occasions. I'm sure he knows wne he's capable of safely ridng the bike. If he continued to ride and whisky-throttled into someone else, he would have been cucified...again.

Dude, who wins a title is secondary to me (by far).

I go to a national to see Super Human MX riding, and thats what Stewart does best.

If I want strategy I'll go to a chess match.

I can find out who wins the title by reading about it.

I wanna see MX WFO or nuthin.

A little off topic, but I think it's absurd to me that people are still blaming his injury on the photographer. James could have landed the jump and come to a complete stop long before the spot on the track where he crashed.

Which one of these do you say driving home with your buddys?

1. Man did you see XXXX blitzing those whoops, feet off the pegs passing YYYYY

Usually goes like this though...

1. Man did you see XXXX blitzing those whoops, feet off the pegs passing YYYY right up until he ate shit and took himself out of the race. I could see that coming, dude was riding out of control. Should have backed it down a bit and just won the race.

2. XXXXX sure rode mellow and patient today. That was cool how he bid his time and made all those calculated passes on the way to the front. That was one hell of a ride!

Stewart knows he can do stuff like that all the time too... actually it is funny, he almost always eats it on the "easy" obstacles, not the super human ones. Well, the easy obstacles and the whoops.

^^this^^ if you like seeing him ride like he is on a sunday ok saturday cruise in 5th place....well thats boring...whats funny is how DC said in the last 2 or 3 Racerheads that it was the photographers fault. What a joke. The real problem is these clueless people at every single race over watering the tracks. Plain and simple...if it wasn't for that there would actually be a reason to still watch the 450 class...

You should quit watching Pro MX then and start going to your local races and watching the Novice class.

No strategy, WFO till the wheels come off.......you'll love it.

It seems to me it is sponsors that are paying. They care about only one thing, increasing sales of their product by associating their product with a rider. James stands out whether he is on the podium or not and whether he wins the championship or not. All eyes are on him and that is what sponsors are about.

Do you think that when Suzuki hired Metcalfe they were pretty sure he'd win a championship? How about when Kawasaki signed Weimer to the 450 class?

Hoped, maybe. But certainly everyone involved didn't see that as a realistic goal without some serious bad luck from several other riders.

Teams hire riders for several reasons and the chance to compete for a title is certainly one of them.

It's a stretch to say that if Stewart backed it down a little he'd have won more titles. He's raced against some of the fastest riders in the history of the sport. Backing it down a notch could mean not winning any titles.

Ask Kevin Windham about that......

That picture of the pigs at the finish line is a perfect example of what a real race fan likes. RACING. It shouldn't matter if the racers are pigs, or F1 drivers. Maybe some of us are not race fans we are MX fans. I think personally that guy was right, maybe we should stop watching the pros and go out and support the good racing at local tracks, where the pee wees all the way up to the vets give everything they have to WIN RACES!

What we have to ask ourselves is do we want to watch a race, or an event where the participants are somewhat motivated to finish in front of the other participants.

For the last few (maybe several?) years, there has been much better racing available than we get from SX or even the nationals. A part of the reason for this might be the "championship factor". In my less than humble opinion, anything that causes a racer to give less than his all DURING A RACE, is a distraction and a negative aspect of the sport.

I like to imagine that if money and job security was not an issue, each and every pro MX'er would race for the win week in week out. Isn't that the point of racing?

He is such a great rider that he can ride that way and still get 5th. I think he could have continued to get top ten or even top five until the two week break, then been much healthier after that. However, he is a racer that goes out there to win. If he can't win, he would rather not race. He has said that in interviews before. This time though, he should have made an exception. Staying alive in the championship is more important than that.

Has anyone asked him to compare the Dungey/Freestone 2012 pace to His/RC pace of 06/07.

I watched 06 High Point the other day, and still have yet to see a pace that fast since then, although 07 Budds Creek came close. Just personal opinion of course. I think the pace is close to what it was then, but that race that day to me is the fastest I've ever seen two riders go around a track.

I was at Hi Point this year and I thought Stewart looked really solid in the 1st moto. He was in a good battle, just not for the lead. I was really disappointed he didn't race the second moto. Salvaging points for the championship would seem important to me but I guess I'm missing something. I'm not a fan of JS7 and this is one example of why. I thought he would have lined up for moto 2 and gave it a try. I would have been more impressed if he did that and pulled off. It was a great weekend and the racing was good, all the top guys and girls, even James put on a good show.

Hangtown, Hi-Point, Southwick and Washougal in 2006 and Hangtown, Budds Creek and Red Bud in 2007. All moto fans should be required to watch those races!!!

I, too, would love to have seen JS7 in the 2nd Moto...

On the other-hand...

I'd rather see him NOT aggravate his wrist.

Some of you would probably be of the opinion that RV1 should be back...already; but, he's smart enough to listen to his Dr's.

The smarter guys heal up.

Then they can come back & give 100%.

James tried to stay in it...& realized he couldnt.
