While watching Stewart ride at High-Point I couldn't help noticing that there are a few things he actually does BETTER when he's holding back...
1. He ACTUALLY was taking the time to figure each rider out & find a Smart-Calculated way around them (kinda like Dungey does...sometimes to a fault).
2. He WAS NOT Banzai-ing ANYTHING...he was RIDING the track and made short little "Bursts of Bubba" as needed to get by someone.
3. He still makes some amazing moves; he's just keeping it toned down and surviving the moto. Obviously "Uncomfortable"; yet, he can run with these guys while riding at what appears to be 85-90%...DAMN!
4. It doesn't seem like he's EVER spent this much time watching the likes of Izzi, Tickle, Short, Metty...and the rest of the pack ...he may actually be learning that he can "Control the Intensity" and get to the front a little more...(see #5)
5. Carefully. This kinda flies in the Face of what Big James is all about: however, he really does need to learn to race Smarter as time goes on (that's jus' my Opinion).
6. Smooth, Calculated, PATIENTLY...Passing. I don't think I've EVER seen him that Patient. Ever.
Imagine a JS7 w/ a little bit of the RD5 "Technique"...? There can be an upside to having to slow-down and focus on what's going on around you. You might just spend a little more time with the rubber-side down.
I'm jus' hoping...

Sorry and just another point of view,
BUT I love watching Stewart because of his wildness.
I wish he still rode like 125 days.
FOR ME what you describe is not Motocross, At all.
.
I kinda get the feeling you're describing FMX...
Winning a Title isn't just about "Who's the Fastest": It's a combination of the Fastest, the most Calculated, The Luckiest, the Most Prepared, Obviously the Quality of the Equipment...and...
Strategy.
If you want to argue with the Idea about "Strategy", go see Roger...he'll fill you in.
How has Dungey managed to ALWAYS be "In it"?

TG nailed it in his first post.
Dude, who wins a title is secondary to me (by far).
I go to a national to see Super Human MX riding, and thats what Stewart does best.
If I want strategy I'll go to a chess match.
I can find out who wins the title by reading about it.
I wanna see MX WFO or nuthin.
.
Which one of these do you say driving home with your buddys?
1. Man did you see XXXX blitzing those whoops, feet off the pegs passing YYYYY
2. XXXXX sure rode mellow and patient today.

1. Man did you see XXXX blitzing those whoops, feet off the pegs passing YYYY right up until he ate shit and took himself out of the race. I could see that coming, dude was riding out of control. Should have backed it down a bit and just won the race.
2. XXXXX sure rode mellow and patient today. That was cool how he bid his time and made all those calculated passes on the way to the front. That was one hell of a ride!
Bagget jumping into Texas 12 Pack made more fans than Joe Mellow any day.
People still talken about it.

Pit Row
No strategy, WFO till the wheels come off.......you'll love it.
Hoped, maybe. But certainly everyone involved didn't see that as a realistic goal without some serious bad luck from several other riders.
Teams hire riders for several reasons and the chance to compete for a title is certainly one of them.
It's a stretch to say that if Stewart backed it down a little he'd have won more titles. He's raced against some of the fastest riders in the history of the sport. Backing it down a notch could mean not winning any titles.
Ask Kevin Windham about that......
What we have to ask ourselves is do we want to watch a race, or an event where the participants are somewhat motivated to finish in front of the other participants.
For the last few (maybe several?) years, there has been much better racing available than we get from SX or even the nationals. A part of the reason for this might be the "championship factor". In my less than humble opinion, anything that causes a racer to give less than his all DURING A RACE, is a distraction and a negative aspect of the sport.
I like to imagine that if money and job security was not an issue, each and every pro MX'er would race for the win week in week out. Isn't that the point of racing?
On the other-hand...
I'd rather see him NOT aggravate his wrist.
Some of you would probably be of the opinion that RV1 should be back...already; but, he's smart enough to listen to his Dr's.
The smarter guys heal up.
Then they can come back & give 100%.
James tried to stay in it...& realized he couldnt.
