I think the NBA are going to start putting each quarter on different channels. You will need to go to four channels to see a complete game.

Just curious if there are any tv media people out there that can explain the benefit and logic to breaking up the coverage of 1 event (forget that there are 4 motos) over 3 different channels? An audience jumping around for a limited view of the entire event does not seem to be a great revenue generator or a model that creates channel loyalty.

I am lucky and got to watch all 4 motos here at home. But what I don't get is....there are so many people that are " Willing to even pay".....and there is no way for them to get to see the races....it doesn't make much sense. I wish Allisports , or Fuel , NBC , Speed , ESPN....."Someone"............would carry an online live stream for you folks.

The GP's are available for anyone who wants to pay......why don't the specific broadcast networks see this as a $$$ revenue income possibility?
If you recall Jeff, that happened a few years ago with the Supercross Live! webcasts. Everyone was pissed when they went away (as was I) and everyone said they would pay for the webcasts. When they offered up the webcasts for a fee, everyone complained and no one signed up! (I did) So it went away forever.

There's no pleasing some people.

Yes I did, sorry you don't agree.

Yes..not everyone gets speed..but having it split up on multiple channels is DUMB.

This is turning out to be the worst MX/SX season yet.

Hey, I agree with the whole splitting it up part is kind of dumb, but mx is a tough act to cover based on the way the 2 moto format works. It's tough to make that deal work on TV. Look at SX. Great coverage because it's easy to follow. 1 race, one winner.

Remember when they talked about changing the 2 motos to only 1 for the sake of TV? People went fucking ballistic!

I have Direct TV, and both channels, but somehow, my DVR did not record the first 450 moto, it got 30 mins of UFC shit, then I got the 2nd 450 moto, then both of the 250's. Did anybody else with DTV get the first 450 moto? It really is pretty lame, the way the coverage is for this sport. SX has awesome coverage, but MX is really pathetic. And before I hear " I should be grateful I get what I get" Fuck that, I pay a lot of money for DTV and cable internet every month, they should be grateful that I am paying my bill on time every month, and keep the schedule on time.

The cheese has been ordered for all you whiny bitches. From what DC wrote in Racerhead this week. they are still getting pressure to change the format...

"I know it's hard to get your head wrapped around, but it's the sport we have—two classes, two motos—and we're doing what we can to keep it that way and also show it live."

But no doubt all you desk jockeys could run things much better than DC.

Some of you sound like a bunch of spoiled little kids.

Honestly this sport needs better marketing and some sort of change. We cant have people who have just done moto their whole lives and expect MX to be as big as nascar. They have marketing and media specialist.

I agree we are lucky to have what we have, but like everyone else this sport deserves to be just as big as any of the major sports

For that to happen we need way more professionalism, starting from the teams to the media.

and for God sakes get rid of freaking Erin Bates!

I dumped TV altogether and just do Netflix, Youtube, etc. now. That said, I would gladly pay Alli, MX Sports, whoever, a reasonable fee to watch the series online, with instant archiving, just like Youthstream. Longo does a lot of messed up things, but offering the option to watch series online for a fee with interviews, instant archives, etc. isn't one of them. I don't know why DC seems opposed to this, but he does.

I got the UFC and freestyle shit too but also got the two hours of moto that followed. Wasn't sure if what that was about an hour earlier so I recorded it anyway. Better safe than sorry.....

Gotta imagine getting new people to follow the sport has got to be a little tough with a tv schedule like this when even the "core" fans are moaning. I think I've got all four motos DVR'd so far. Just sat down to watch. Looking good so far, although my Fuel picture is fuzzier than the Carlsbad USGP from 78 on the 25 inch Curtis Mathis color console.

"my Fuel picture is fuzzier than the Carlsbad USGP from 78 on the 25 inch Curtis Mathis color console. "
haha, that's some funny chit.. I don't have the fuzzy pic problem from fuel, I just get the missed motos due to the screwed up schedule. I have set my dvr to record the series, so I don't know what is up with it, you would think it would record it whenever it comes on, which it most likely will later on in the week. Who knows, I am going riding tomorrow, so I will forget all about it until about Wednesday anyway. Wink

i have never, ever, ever, been one to.... ever... slam or not be thankful of ANY kind of coverage MX and SX gets. I have been the first to defend, applaud every move and even offer free advice to problem solve that was taken and used..... but what we have now, is effing clownshoes. Fragmenting things willy nilly over two different channels and one of them isnt even a popular package channel, is totally counter productive! For fucks sake, you have Bill Dance's saltwater fishing leading into Budds? This is the demographic you are going for DC? And yes, this is DC's deal.

DC, Im not sure what you are trying to accomplish and from the looks of it, do you still? (and i mean that with sincerity not assishness) We both know live, or 2 days later, the numbers are the same. So why is live suddenly the holy grail? A 1 share should be your goal, and you are blowing it just to be live? Why not a constant time so people can find it! Take a respectable channel, FuelTV, run the whole damn thing at 6 pm est on a saturday night. 6 to 10 EST, mx, full motos start to finish. During the time between motos, this is more reporting time... get 3 two person crews out roaming the pits (camera person and reporter), chasing stories, talk to riders ect! Now you are getting a ton of teams and riders air time, (which for what its worth, a HUGE applause to doing that now more than ever before) you are on a channel alot have, at a constant time so no issues finding it, with time cushion in case anything happens (time wiggle room incase a storm hits). Plus FuelTV is your demographic!

And we know its not that simple, you just dont snap your fingers. But, from all public appearances, you literally have to be in your chair, with your finger on the remote waiting to record or watch because the DVR is NOT getting these. The first two races NBCs blew it, a storm messed up thunder valler, high point went off without a hitch, and this week, first moto Budds did NOT record when anything that says moto or motorcycle racing or ama gets recorded on mine. When you jump everywhere, and you dont follow program naming convention, things dont work. Also, all the gripes about DVR problems.... what does that tell you we think about omg omg omg live at all costs programming?

X2 - Live is nice, but I would rather see it tape delayed a couple hours if that's what it takes to get it on one channel. Football, baseball, golf, nascar, etc...they all are on for 3-4 hours at a time on ONE station. Yeah I get the explanation that it's "4 different" events, but is it really? And as others are saying, are the other shows that are on Speed, ESPN, ESPN2, Fuel, NBC Sports that popular that MX can't compete (spelling bees, tractor pulls, hot dog eating contest)?? So what would've happened today if the weather was like it was at Thunder Valley? Would they have ran the motos with the banners blowing across the track because we only had the 1 hour NBC time slot?

Ten years ago we got to watch both motos of both classes on one channel. Now you have a situation where people who don't come on Internet chat rooms aren't even aware of where the racing coverage has gone. My dad is a perfect example. He was a racer for most of his life and a huge fan of the sport who rarely missed a moto. He hasn't seen one outdoor event this year. He, like many of the people I know, just assumes they don't show the races anymore. Not everyone plays around on computers and wants to search for races and results all day. Hell, I don't even know the last time my dad turned a computer on. This is horrible for the sport, and everyone knows it. People with busy lives aren't going to sit around hoping to crack the code and learn the secret handshake required to allow them to watch something that they could see with zero effort ten years ago.
You pretty much summed up my dad too (Happy Father's Day!). I'm sure there are countless others just like them. Bottom line, it used to be much easier, so why should we be happy with going backwards.

It's funny how some people just can't seem to figure out that no matter what network, or what format they use, not everyone world wide is going to get coverage, all the time, every time. What's so hard to understand?

This season, all I get are the first motos streamed on line. No TV coverage whatsoever because I don't have NBC Sports nor Fuel TV in my area. I watch the first motos, then spend the rest of the day riding or something, then I download the torrent files Sunday morning and enjoy at my leisure. It's a fuck of a lot less stressful than bitching and moaning about the lack of coverage every bloody Saturday lol.

If you want to see it bad enough, you'll find a way. No big deal.
thats a great business model there, if i tried to run my business with this
type of mindset, i would be hanging out with Tyrone Biggles and eatin dogfood!!
U know what dogfood tastes like?, just like it smells, Delicious!!
I am as big of a moto fan as u will find, but i am not spending extra time to find
a damn race that theoretically should be all on one channel in succession.
all they need to televise anyway is the 250's, cause the 450 class isnt
providing what the fans would like to see, and that is the sports top riders
battling for a title and wins. We all know b4 the gate drops whats gonna happen.

nothing personal against DC, but i have said it a thousand times
racing is the business, but the business isnt racing. Till the regular
core moto fans can get all 4 motos in one airing, the sport is not going
to go anywhere. Anyone not core, is always like WTF?

It seems like a lot of you have unrealistic expectations of what our relatively small sport can get for TV coverage. DC and the entire MX Sports crew have done more in the past 4 years to improve and expand our sport than in the entire 10 years prior. Is this years TV package perfect? Hell no, but at least they are trying new things and attempting to move the sport forward.
This.

Same here. More and more of us are doing internet television, I think. I remember paying for audio-only a couple years ago, and that was for supercross. (our off-season) I would definitely pay the powers-that-be for something along the lines of mx-life.tv's FIM season, and be glad for it.

Where does the money made from motocross come from? ticket sales?

How much money DOES motocross bring in? (excluding rider's endorsements)

If 20,000 fans pay $25 each = $500,000
Moto PAYS to broadcast the races = (expense not income)

Really in the end, not much money

No money, No Production

This trying to watch the second moto online is a gigantic waste of time.

In an age of being able to connect with anyone online and the crappy TV coverage (I'm not talking about the announcers) it's beyond me how this sport can't find a venue for it's fans to watch an entire event on the same channel or website around the world.

Billions have been made by giving the people what they want online and here we are having to try and sift through a multitude of different channels and websites to try and get an entire event in one easy to watch format.

I've been a participant of this sport for over 20 years and a fan for much longer. But I seriously give up. You win. I'm going to go mow the lawn and do all the other shit I should have been doing while I wasted my fucking time trying to tune into the one sport I wanted to watch all week long.

This is fucking bush league and a major step backward. Last year I could watch the sport fairly easily between TV and the internet, This year is a goddamn joke and I'm done with it. I have better things to do with my time than fuck around with this fragmented programming bullshit.
I didn't read the replies but DC has got to pad the pockets a little more. MX has become the "how can MX Sports/ DC make more money show" than it has making the fans and what not happy. It is no wonder MX hasn't been as strong as it was in the 80's and late 90's.

Guess what I did during the first motos once I found them........................I took the best nap i've had in a while. Way to go AMA and MX Sports, you are bastardizing the sport from the fans and doing nothing to bring in new fans. It is the equivalent of a bad tornado in the business world. It may go slow or fast but one of these days it will take you out.

yz, thats not true. No, I havent seen irs returns, but I have a VERY real and grounded knowledge of how much it costs per race to A. get a production crew (cameras, crew, broadcast trucks, ect) for each race B. what it costs to "buy time" on a network, ever a low tier like Fuel and C. what you can hope or expect to get back if you pull x in a rating.

I will bet anyone any amount of money they wish to lose that DC isnt making a damn dime off TV, or the nats. he makes his money from 2 tracks, and oh, he has this little magazine.

DC is alot of things, but a Youthstream Luongo (sp?) he isnt! I do think hes trying to do too much himself. he has help, but they dont do a thing unless he says so. hes spreading himself too thin and this is what happens, you get the broad strokes but the details get overlooked and lost.

The thing is, If you have a product that is in demand i.e. AMA MX, the networks do what they have to and do what they can to pick them up. Do you really think DC is paying networks to pick up the series? If that is the case, AMA MX needs a better PR and sales person to sell it to networks.

I'm sorry but I don't know where you get the idea that AMA MX is "in demand". I don't think MX Sports is paying the networks to pick the series up but that's only because it's on Fuel/NBC Sports. Do you honestly think that networks are fighting over the chance to broadcast MX racing?

I give up as well. I decided this today. Really, I give up. I am so tired of trying to get a feed each week. I will not expect to watch the US Motocross on the next date. (Of course I will bring up the live lap chart (I am a racer!)) I wish the best of luck to all my friends in the business.
