I'm not even a KTM owner (CRF250X with a 280 kit. You can start the jokes now), but whenever I need parts or service, SMS is my choice. And it's because they treat off-road customers with respect.
i remember going to the local small time shop and always enjoyed it as a kid because there was a ton of accesories like 2-stroke pipes hanging from the sealing and whatnot...these new mega mall dealerships are lame IMO
Couldn't that bite him in the a$$ come contract negotiation time?

One time I was in there and they had a left over YZ250F with some sign on it that said "$1,500 factory incentive !!"
The salesman asked if I was interested. I told him I already have too many bikes but if he made me a deal I couldn't refuse... well, I couldn't refuse it. (keep in mind I bought 2 bikes at the same time before, cash, off this very salesman but he didn't remember me)
So he does up some numbers and shows me what we are looking at (I don't recall exactly but this is close)
YZ250F $7500
shipping $400
assembly $250
documents $200
subtotal $8350
tax $835
total $9185
minus incentive -$1500
my price $7685
I said hold up, why are you calculating the tax before the discount???? He said that's law, that's how it is. I said BS, it's called SALES TAX. You pay tax on money that actually changes hands. I'm not going to pay tax on money I didn't spend. he wouldn't relent.
I said is this the best you can do? This is a leftover bike! He didn't care.
I said remember, I have too many bikes already. I'm not desperate for this bike. Make me a real deal and I will throw it in the back of my truck right now. No change.
Friggin idiots.
However, I've only bought 4 bikes from dealerships (and 1 was used) over more than a decade of buying them, so I don't deal with this as much as some.
The last bike I bought (last year, KX450F) I saw an ad for an almost unbelievable price on the internet by a pretty large dealership. I called to confirm that that was the actually price and there wouldn't be another two grand in fees. To make sure, I told him I'd being paying for it today and needed to know exactly how much to bring. So when I arrived the whole thing took all of 15-20 minutes, most of which was spent outside with one of the mechanics going over the bike with me (first FI bike for me) and that was that.
The place was Sport Cycles in Rockingham, NC and I'll be returning to buy my next new bike, probably next summer, from them. I realize that one sale is small potatoes, but customer returning adds up eventually. It also seems really easy to make people happy, just be straight with them, not sneaky. I don't know anyone who appreciates seeing a bike for X price, arriving and finding out "their" price is X+$1500-2000.
My favourite one was Astar tech8's they would come in ask for the price i would give it to them they would be delighted and say yep i'll have them i'd ask what size and they wouldn't know so i'd send them back to the dealer who carried shed loads of stock to try them on they would then ring me and i'd order them in.Sometimes if i was out and about i would even deliver free of charge and have a cup of tea and a chat whilst they showed me their bikes.
I buy all my stuff at my local dealer.I might be able to get it cheaper on line but why would I want to?
I buy a lot of my gear/accessories through email from a shop 4 hours drive away because of the great service I get from them. I also buy some things direct from the importers (through their websites) , and a lot off trademe (NZ's craigslist). If I require a number of expensive items, I will buy off the BTO website too.
I have only been living in my current location for a year, and I have to say that I usually get great service from the local Suzuki dealer (where I get parts for my bikes), and also another bike shop in town that does suspension.
I'm sure Chad can afford to pay retail, but I am surprised he didn't just get a CRF50 direct from Honda.
Post a reply to: I think Chad is onto something here....
