While I'm not a union fan, I do believe there needs to be some type of insurance program.
The one thing I absolutely think the AMA should mandate is that every rider who lines up on the gate has insurance coverage.

If they can work out some kind of group rate, that'd be even better. But no insurance coverage? No race.

So, what forces need to come into play to make this happen? I agree, but would it be a rider initiative or would it need support from the fans to make it happen?

1000 %
part of the cost of racing is INSURANCE.

1 thing a Riders union could do is have a say about dangerous tracks

Just in case anyone misunderstood (and I can see how they might), I'm not saying that the AMA should buy it for them. I'm just saying that insurance coverage should be mandatory.

The AMA needs to step up. They can partner with an insurance company and provide insurance for all riders (dirt and street) at an affordable price. Yes - the riders will have to pay for it But the insurance companys are bean counters - they work the numbers and if they get enough "riders" to pay the premiums, they will go for it. There will have to be caps on total payouts but it can happen.

Why can't the AMA do what many other groups do and offer group rates to its members. The only problem is finding a company willing to offer it at an affordable rate. This problem would exist union or no union.

OK I'll play along. What Health Insurance company will provide insurance to a professional racer? What is the policy rate? $10,000 a month?

Simply put, as a racer you are self-employed. You are responsible for your own care. That includes insurance. Sad to say, but most guys don't think about it. The risks in racing are far greater than what I do do as a a self-employed truck driver, but the conditions are the same. Take care of yourself, because no-one else will. Job before the one I have now made buying insurance through them mandatory. At $120 a WEEK! $6240 a year, for a truck driver. Think how much it would cost a low ranking privateer. Remember, insurance is based on risk.

Totally agree, it seems to be an issue that these guys don't seem to think about.

Form a Cartel, the banks do it and the drug dealers do it...

The main group of riders from #8 or so on down to top #40 riders that show up to qualify to SX or MX need to form a cartel. With the right plan and the right leader it could happen. Ideally that leader is a past champion or even a current top #1-7 rider willing to stick his neck out on this deal... the leverage of them as a "cartel" in ultimately "deciding" what races they will or wont do, at the 11th hour, will potentially get Feld (SX with a full stadium and the pressure of live TV to deliver a race show) to consider the alternative bargain request: To raise ticket prices 1-3 bucks per ticket at all following rounds or the Cartel will continue to undermine the night show moments before live TV, and then put 100% of that money into a fund for group coverage and rider pension to be paid out based on making the night show in some sort of fair order. The more years you race and make the night show the larger your pension is, all the while you have coverage. Then, if an individual rider wants to have their own policy for "added coverage" thats their biz. BOOM! haha

Insurance is a way to distribute health costs across a large number of insured. If the insured has a preexisting condition or high risk, the insurance company does not want those people because.
1. It increases the cost of the insurance.
2. That cost is passed on to the consumer in the form of higher premiums.
3. The consumer looks for cheaper insurance.
4. Those who do not insure preexisting conditions and high risk will be lower cost to the consumer.
5. Consumer switches to cheaper insurance.
6. Company now does not insure preexisting condition or high risk to compete.

In short insurance companies don't want to partner with high risk groups unless they can make a lot of money doing it meaning, the costs will be quite high. So you can say goodbye to "affordable" insurance. Even most large corporate companies have exclusions in the policy that excludes racing, equestrian, and other dangerous sports.

Gov steps in and makes laws about preexisting and high risk.

People who do not have preexisting or participate in high risk sports feel that why should they have to pay for people who break bones racing motocross, sportbike, horses, bicyclist, etc. I agree with them. So if you race motocross even at a non pro level, you are going to have to pay a LOT MORE for insurance

But liberals and communists/socialists believe in the redistribution of wealth. They want to force you to do what they want by taking your money to pay for others. Just like the original poster wants to do. (If in a democracy, a majority agree that all insurance companies should accept preexisting conditions and high risk groups knowing it will cost consumers more money, so be it.)

You have choices right now. Don't race, don't have insurance, self insure, buy health insurance.
Dictating to you that you must purchase insurance (from a gov level) forces you to pay whether you race or not, need it or not, do drugs motorsports activities, racing, dangerous activities that destroy your body and cause a burden to others or not,

If the riders want a union, that is fine, but if the cost of an SX ticket doubles because of a riders union, I won't be going. That is how capitalism works, You have choices, socialism takes all your choices away and give them to gov.

I am glad gov doesn't control the AMA/promoters/riders/sponsors and they can work it out for themselves.

Unions solve all the world's problems......fact
Unions are currently one of the main downfalls of the US as they are responsible for driving manufacturing out of the US in a lot of cases and in order for the US to sustain, we have to make things. They skim money off the top for basically doing nothing (maybe a negotiation once every 3 years), create an extra layer of inefficient bureaucracy, threaten workers if they are TOO productive (for making the other workers look bad), and they ultimately cause the price of the good or service to increase dramatically for no additional value (which drives the price up to the point consumers look for other lower cost options).

Creating a rider insurance program, all for it! Shoot, the lowest cost option might be the AMA employing a group of doctors, PT's, and surgeons.

That would cut out the insurance middle man but if it was cost effective, wouldn't corporations be doing that?

I know PLENTY of riders that have PAID for their OWN health insurance.

This ain't about unions: It's about RESPONSIBILITY.

Being cost effective isn't the issue IMO. It's not done because most businesses don't have that as a part of their core business offering and it isn't their focus as well as it's just too easy to come up with an insurance program. But the main reason is, it would force people to use the company doctors - which they may not like or trust or specialize in their respective medial conditions. Thus, offering an insurance program is the easier way out. The devil is in the details as always. I think it could be done for SX/MX athletes. The biggest challenge would be racers being spread out all over the US - easy for surgery/specialist type of work (fly them in for a few weeks). Then the local doctors could be part of the program - little more difficult to execute. PTs would be easy and this is the part that needs to be spread out over different geographies. The super expensive specialists could be regional and kept to a minimum.

James Eickel pretty much got black balled for Union talk.

We don't need a Union, WWR is going to fix all the sport's ills. Oh wait, that was ten years ago.........

My thoughts on this are that it is way different, simply due to the money being tossed around. Motocross could have something similar but it would be on the scale of $100 not thousands or hundreds of thousands. One Formula 1 team can employ 400-600 people. One team. I don't think all the teams racing in Supercross amount to that number. Scottie knows, but for everyone else; there are 24 teams with two farm teams and a kart development team behind each one. If you look at the scale of how many people there are it starts to look like a insurance or union profit center. Not to mention simply due to the millions of dollars, the interest is working for the FOTA.

Just looking at it like that - I could be way off though.

Have you EVER heard of a pro racer in another sport having to beg for money to pay medical bills?
Geezus....not again.

Who the fuck do you think is stopping these guys from buying their own insurance?? Oh...of course......GW Bush!!

I knew it.

These guys aren't employee's. They don't need a union. They need to take some of their money and buy an insurance policy. Along with putting some money away to support themselves if (when!!) they get injured and can't ride/work/whatever for a living.

If you guys just tax funded the health care system, just like you do with the army and your defense system. This woudln't be a topic every dawn week. Spread the cost. Right now my understanding is that you guys have a system where you have the freedom to choose (not to have an army, but to have health care) which ends up with with 40-50 million feels "it wont happen to me", I can buy some six packs and some goodies at Dunk'n every month instead, and chill, and let someone else foot the bill if accident would after all happen. That's really the ultimate "free health care" if you ask me? But you people that suck up and have an insurance now have to pay for those people (because hospital now have to charge more cash to make up for losses). Also government have to pay for those people in part.

But nooooooooooooooooo, it's socialism when funding health, but capitalism when funding army? Did I get the last thing part right? It's very confusing...

I didnt know that the Indy car drivers started an "Association" a lot like F1's FOTA just a couple years ago:

Two-time champion Dario Franchitti, IRL and ChampCar veteran Tony Kanaan, and F1 and IndyCar driver Justin Wilson will head a newly-created IndyCar drivers’ association, which was formally announced for the first time today.

The Drivers' Assocaition, similar to the Formula 1 Drivers' Association and the now-defunct Championship Drivers Association, will give drivers a unified voice to help the series management determine safety and competition regulations.

more HERE

I envision something like SMRSC (SX/MX Racers Safety Committee) and loosely focus on things like the above mentioned "Associations" focus on. "give drivers (riders) a unified voice to help the series management determine safety and competition regulations"

It could work if done right, and with the right people to head it.

Another example (article) of the Indy Association:

New IndyCar Series drivers union talks up track safety

The Izod IndyCar Series drivers recently formed an association that is vowing to advise the series and its tracks on a breadth of topics from safety to competition to media strategy. Tony Kanaan, Justin Wilson and Dario Franchitti were voted the group's leaders in a meeting before the Mid-Ohio race two weeks ago.

"It's a good idea to have a voice and be more professional and unified," Danica Patrick said last weekend before running the NASCAR Nationwide race at Michigan. "If there's a guardrail or a runoff that doesn't look safe, we're risking it, so we want something changed. So (it's) a drivers union kind of thing."

Im not sure how much these guys make, like the guys getting 12-20th in SX or payout for nationals, but really they should be saving their money for a rainy day, they should have insurance (didnt read the article so Idk if he has or not) but it is common sense to have it and each and every rider should have it. Don't live like a Rockstar unless you are making more than a mill a year, and even then SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!
They have to invest in training facility etc. All big shots have them so if u want to play with the big boys u need to keep up with that shit.

Buying Lambo's and shit aint gonna help ya ofc.

Oh boy, I was a union brick layer (refractory) not house block. I can tell you that a union will be the worst thing for the sport. We did very little actual work, complained about everything and thought our shit didn't stink. I personally don't want to see this sport spiral into boycotts and walk outs cuz they don't think they get payed enough. Example Baseball, basketball and football. Motorsports are the last professional sport I watch these days because most other sports make a million dollars and then complain that they don't make 1.3 million. Greed is a mofo. Just my.02
I can assure you every local is different. There's no gravy train Ive ever witnessed and Ive worked in quite a few locals. Especicially in the trowel trades. If you aren't producing, you're down the road.
