Okay, this is more my opinion than a theory, but I'll bet it could be backed up with facts:
Theory is: The fenders of a bike affect it's sales, especially the front. Here's some examples of good and bad fenders (All my opinion):
Best looking fenders -
Honda has always had the best looking fenders. Consequently, they have sold the most bikes and are IMO the best dirt bike manufacturer. 1999 IMO was the last year of the near perfect looking fenders for the CR:

2000-03 were okay, the front fender was a little fat:

2004-09 were so so, a little too much bend in the front fender:

2009-present, not so good. It bends a little early and looks a little odder than the previous:

Kawasaki has the next best looking fenders, with some traditionally bad rear fenders:
Best Kawi front fenders 2003-2008:

Good front, but bad rear fender. It reminds me of those cars that squatted, like those Nissan Altimas, and Infiniti J30s:

88-89 rear fender could be considered to be the ugliest rear fender, second only to Suzukis RMs prior to 89:

Suzuki can be considered some of the worst fenders prior to 89. Both front and rear were absolutely horrid. Consequently, I'm sure their sales reflected it:

The mid 90s weren't too bad, but the rear fender was a little off:

Looked better in 96-00, although the barn door radiator shrouds of 99-00 kind of hindered it:

20001-08 This fender began the bent look and other manufacturers began to follow (for some reason). Doesn't look too bad, but could tilt down in the front more;

2009-present More of the same, but the front fender IMO looks a little too small and straight:

Yamaha has always been middle-of-the-road with fenders, with the worst looking fenders to date IMO are the current ones:
Obviously copying KTM's melted-butter-mashed-in-front look:

2000-08 Best looking Yamaha fenders. Other than the fender needing to come down in the front a little more, these were the best looking fenders for Yamaha:

KTM has been the most confused company in the Big 5, and consequently, their bike sales have suffered (also due to the performance of the bike), with some of the worst looking fenders:
Straight -

To extremely bent -

Present - It's still too bent, while the rear fender is flat and curvy. If they fixed the fenders, it would sell better (again, my opinion). A pretty good improvement over the past efforts though.

The others
TM has the best looking front fender of all the current bikes. It has the best curve and goes down in front just the right amount:

Husqvarna TC449. Simply the worst looking fenders (and plastic). Sales? I'll bet they can't give these things away-

Husky's others need a TM front fender. And why can't they put a full radiator shroud on the thing:

Fantic used to be good:

What the heck happened? The front fender sticks straight out:

Even though it is kind of a silly topic, and we know the manufacturers don't listen to anybody, they would sell more bikes if they looked better. The best looking bike order has traditionally been Honda, Kawai, Yamaha, Suzuki, KTM, and the others. I'm sure the sales figures have followed the same order. . . Just Sayin'

I would personally like to think function over form... but that could be way off base...
Appearance surely plays some role in bike sales, but I suspect there's a lot more to it than that based on the individual purchasing the bike.
When I bought my first bike back in '06, I sat on all of the big 5 models... the KX fit me best... wasn't so much about the looks. I'm tall and the KX tends to have a taller stance and a more open cockpit IMO. I will admit I was somewhat biased because I always wanted a KX since the first time I saw Jeff Ward racing the 80's... so I'm sure that played into my choice to some degree...

Great correlation that has some bearing between the rational and emotive thought process. Could affect sales if you're of the mindset that is easily swayed by ad pros.
"An accepted axiom in marketing is that consumers buy on emotion and justify the purchase with rational reasons."
It's like you didn't know, ah AH!
Some people need help
I'm glad we've all worked through these important issues
All mental I know.
I remember a couple years back we talked about Josh Hills Cycra front fender on his YZ and how it rode high and looked off.
Pit Row
Stadium Plate on all CRFs to get the front end to settle properly in the turns; more so from 09 on.
Another well known fact (or else pure conjecture on my part) is that when KTM puts CRF style front fenders on their bikes and gives the buyer a choice of color other than that of a pumpkin there will be a sea of push button bikes on starting lines everywhere.
What ever happened to the "UpFront" fender or the "DeFender"??
Of course the best fender / number plate combo of all time was the Preston Petty "TonyD" with the swiss cheese
"Holeshot" plate with plastic bolt-on numbers.

Looking back over the years you can see motocross bikes getting more pointy. If you look at the YZ250F of 2010+ you see a very pointy design. The same counts for the new CRF450. I personally think they are becoming more ugly.
The KTMs from 2007 to 2010 are the best looking bikes in my opinion. The CRF from 2009 to 2012 are also great looking, minus the front fender like you said.
Anyways I have had many brands of bikes and always liked the view of the honda fender from the seat.( never ridden new generation honda though)
