Man I lived here for 30 years and never knew this was a problem. I live in the burbs about 20 miles north of Atlanta. Most people really don't live downtown. Pretty popular place though. Lot's of restaurants, clubs, etc. I know there are some bad areas but just like any other city I guessed. Must be a group of people that look forward to the event each year to snag some bikes.

Guys, just stay in Smyrna or Marietta. Right off Cobb pkwy there are a bunch of hotels and the Cobb Galleria Center. It's right off the interstate and about a 15 minute drive to the Dome. Shouldn't have any problems there. Just go north of Atlanta a little ways.

No need to stay downtown at all. Just go in any direction about 15 miles. I am more familiar north of Atlanta though.

(ITP is "inside the perimeter", which is Interstate 285, which is the perimeter highway around the city.) If you're looking for somewhere safe to stay, I'd certainly stay outside the perimeter. The north side is typically safer than anything on the east, south, or western sides. The farther out you go, your chances improve for safety.

I can go on and on about crime in the Atlanta area, but I'll save it for later.

If you're attending, enjoy the racing. Atlanta always has great crowds and the racing is always legendary. Just remember that when you're outside of the Georgia Dome and the World Congress Center (pits), keep your guard up!
This is just a BIT extreme. Atlanta has crime yes. Every city does. Some spots are good while other are bad. But jesus the whole 285 perimeter??? That Virginia highlands area inside the perimeter sure does look like a slum.... HAHAHA

^^^^ Very true, Powermoves. A lot of misinformation in this thread. I don't remember seeing "WARNING" threads about the Oakland SX. Guess all hotels in Oakland are safe to park a trailer. Or, just hating on a southeast venue that sells out every freaking year.

For those really interested in low crime areas near the Ga Dome, check out the hotels near I-85/N Druid Hills. Or, stay in one of the many surrounding nice hotels with security cameras in gated parking areas. A good rule of thumb for any city: If you can see and access your room door from the parking lot, then, bring your tools and bikes into the room. Done that one many times.

Above all, go to The Cheetah on Spring St. Leave your GF or wife to guard your bike(s).

agreed... I live 30 minutes north of Baltimore, and have spent time in philly, ny, and ac. This place is tame compared to home guys.

Has nothing to do with hating on Atlanta but the thieves that live there. Has there been another venue where 17 bikes 4 vans and 2 trailers were stolen from within "secure" parking areas? (how many bikes were stolen in Oakland?)
And last year was by far the worse but has happened there with regularity for the past few years

Only saying keep your eyes open. Most all the thefts ocurred between 4:30am and 8am the Sunday morning after the race.

Exactley,, Sucks to say but in a high crime area, a stolen dirt bike is the least of the problems of crime. What up Ms P whens your first sx you going . Always be careful; and have insurance and lock your shit up.

Hey Billy. I def learned my lesson about the insurance! Looks like no SX this year. Just got the cast off a week ago. Still having shoulder pain with the seperation. We all made the best decision for Joey to concentrate on the outdoors.
