Travis Pastrana is a household name. Chad Reed, James Stewart and Ryan Villapoto are not.
but Reed straight up bitch slapped everyone there... big time. amazing to see how far he's come in terms of riding style.
and those jumps were HUGE
Pit Row
The jumps were fucking HUGE.
Pastrana is FAST, absolutely FAST.
And Chad Reed is sooo smooth, even there.
Nowadays the riders just skip the entire section and re-enter at the next corner like nothing ever happened.
This race perfectly encapsulates Travis' career for me. Fast as hell but ending the race getting up like a heavyweight fighter after being knocked out. Like a super-concentrated JS7.
Something to the affect of "as long as you don't gain a position". But what if you gain an advantage? Last year at one of the races Barcia went off the track in the whoops, pinned it on the side of the track and used the extra momentum he carried to pass a rider that had just exited the whoops.
I understand that you can't always re-enter the track where you exited, for safety reasons, but that doesn't mean you should be allowed to pin it beside the track going faster than if you had stayed on.
In retrospect though...had he kept racing he wouldn't be as succesful as he is today.
Pretty sure he makes more $$ than he would have ever did had he kept racing.
No denying he once had tremendous natural ability...
It's easy to forget when you are looking at his career in retrospect, but he had every team manager ready to sign him on a moment's notice. It was a widely-held belief that he would put Carmichael out to pasture very quickly.
Of course, riders mature, things change, and we never got to see TP's true potential. I have to agree with Hando, though: he's definitely a bigger star and making more money now than he would have had he stuck with MX.
If there is one guy i would of gladly donated my knees to, he is the one i would have! Hell i dont need them
Therein lies the difference between the two.
Would Suzuki even have gone after RC if Travis had not gone the Freestyle route?
Travis was going to be their marquee guy from all appearances.
