At the same time, I remember high school football being killer as well... I only imagine how it is in college and up. Sure the plays might be short and the breaks long, but those few seconds of play take A LOT out of you... Half of it is the strength you must exert (I was a defensive end), the other half is how much the contact takes out of you. Some hits you take just make you want to lay there for a few minutes to gather yourself, but you have to get up and push on. It wears you down quick.
Apples to oranges here.

Another thing that makes moto hard is you are scared to half to death for most of the race.
Wrestling went to 5 minute rounds years ago in Roma Greco and Freestyle, yet when i starting boxing in the military it humbled me on what i thought was fit.
When you train use a snorkel to breath throught this will help with body flex and lung recoop.
Motocross is easy when compared to other sports of a more demanding nature....
Which I l know will be hard to swallow for some of you jizzgulpers, it's da troof I tell ya boy!
Some of you guys will be pissed at this but the original Football (soccer in US) seems to beat all of the above hands down as far as this goes (im not really into it either),I'm sure there are more in depth sources, strength is hard to gauge,NFL is more strenuous but only in very small bursts

It's not a slight against MX or any other sport, each of which have elements that a cyclist cannot master. It's simply boiling the argument down to meaurables like power, wattage, and energy consumption. In those catagories, cycling stands alone.

Surgery was June '10 to repair a "catastrophic" humerus break (surgeon's term). I still cannot raise my arm higher than my shoulder w/o assistance. Hopefully a follow-up procedure in April will loosen the hinges. Am I still riding? Yes, sans the big jumping part.
MX at a high level is fairly tough I agree, however some of the chumps on here think it's the toughest sport in the world, clearly not the case...
Like comparing Windham and Carmichael. Who is the better "rider"? Probably Kevin. The better racer? RC.
They said that cycling and MX riders are very similar in fitness due to the demands on the body over a prolonged period without rest and the continuing change in heart rate, where in other sports, although over prolonged periods the athletes rest during the match and don't require the same level of endurance fitness.
Other sports although the athletes are very fit, they are trained for short bursts of energy and then can rest for 20/30 secs.
Also in allot of other endurance sports the heart rate stays the same where in MX it is up and down. i.e. if the rider makes a mistake or has a moment on the bike the heart rate shoots up for a while, then has to settle back down again and this happens over and over during a race which has a great demand on endurance apparently.
why U mad?
I think motocross is the toughest sport on earth, but then im biased.
