I know there were Works YZ' Mono-SHocks as early as 73 but what was the 1st year that Yamaha put it on the production bike? I seem to find info that says there was a very limited run of 74's that had it but other sources point to 76 as the first year. Help

1975. I think they had some pretty early release dates for some of them though.

Late 1974 I pitted next to Mike Cleveland, at the time one of the top locals, at the annual BlueGrey.
That was the first time I ever saw one.
We talked about it, he said the only thing bad was he couldn't get any real speed out of it.

I seem to recall, early June of 1975.

My school held a motocross race, on the actual campus (Paramount High School) and one dude there had a mono-shock at that time.

We all were oohing and awing about the bike.

I suppose my memory could be a bit fuzzy, but I don't think so, I hadn't started doing recreational drugs just yet.

I was a freshman at the time and rode to a second place on my 1971 Yamaha 175 CT1C.

So by my story, Yamaha had the "mono" out by mid 1975?

Almost hard to believe that bikes were that shitty back then. I mean, at the time, we thought they were awesome and that was just a little less than 40 years ago. Can you imagine what we will have in another 40? The 2052 YZ450F?

I raced a 1975 YZ125 monoshock. looked like it had a tach and speedo on the top of the forks. I'm fairly certain this was the first year of production monoshocks

That would have been the 1976 YZ125X with the nitrogen charged forks. That actually came after the 1976 YZ125C which was a early release 1976 model. It often times gets referred to as a 75 model. The 75 YZ125B was just a yellow version of the 74 A model twin shocker.

I bought all new GE appliances a few years ago. Lets just say I will never buy another GE product again.

The X model 125 was actually dubbed as the 76 1/2 model. The 125 C was out in mid to late 75.

My 1977 Yz 100 looked the same as the 76 yz125C with a little different graphics on the metal tank.

It is amazing that GE being as large a co. as it is, sells such low end products, I'm in the electrical field and would never use their product by choice.

I thought the 78 models with the aluminum swingarms looked wicked trick. At 78 pinetop nationals it seemed everyone racing one was busting off the chain guide, but man they looked sweet.

OMG Newman....there she is... my 74 YZ125A! (:-P
What I'd give to have pics of that bike/me back in the day.
Betor forks up, canted Bilstien shocks out back(ala Suz RMs)
Miller Mano porc head, pipe w silencer to side of cyl(from kart eng design Dave made),
Honda Elsinore seat-other goodies. She was a strong, torquey 125, but no match for the lightning fast
Hondas back then.
All "oldschoolers" reunite! :-) Too kewl.

As far as I know the 1974 yz250b and yz360b were the first production monoshock Yamaha. But they were produced in limited numbers.

Here's Yamaha Motors office site with there company milestones . . .

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/corporate/historyTimeline.aspx

1st Mono-shock in production was in 1975.

I had the YZ100 C in 1976 . . . spent a lot of time cleaning the dual air filters.

Post a reply to: What was the 1st year of the YZ production Mono-shock?
