Awesome, I love these! Thanks! I really enjoyed Matthes', Moser's,. and Swizcore's as well. If I find the time I may do one myself just for the fun of it while I still can remember haha.

A cool read! It is great to get your perspectives on the bikes as contrast to the magazine reviews... Thanks

Just finished it, nice write up! Every time I read about the '98 - '99 CR 125's these days it really bums me out that I had to suffer through that slow as bike back in my golden years of racing. This was my first 125 after moving up from 80's, and I wondered why I could no longer pull a holeshot to save my life. Unfortunately my brand loyalty at that age wouldn't have allowed me to buy anything else... Now I'll buy any brand bike, but I still do have a soft spot for Hondas Smile

I shared two bikes with you, the 1987 KX125 and 1989 YZ125. Your descriptions were spot-on! I had the Race Tech shifter on my '89 and '90 YZs, and as atrocious as it looked it sure worked. I don't know how you remember such detail from each bike, I just seem to have "overall" impressions from my line of steeds except the most recent ones.

Nice writeup Tony, you sure remember the details.

I think Larry Ward once said that his 88 YZ125 was his favorite bike of all time, of course Im sure his bike shifted properly.

I wish i would have had an 87 CR 125, damn.

I remember rideing a couple of my buddies 94 RM 250's. Weird bikes. Zingy power with a light front end, but would turn good.

That KTM 250 looks sweet!

Great write up Tony. I never got the chance to own or ride a few of those bikes and it's nice to get a perspective from the common man vs. the magazine testers of the era. Thanks!

Hey Blazier, who did you ride around with in Loudoun back then? (this is Moto East Jason btw). I was there riding my 86 CR125 but by 1990 I was in Harrisonburg. I could never find places to practice around Loudoun except for the orchard in Round Hill, where we always got run off by dudes with radios.
I grew up right down the road from you. I used to race Antietam, White Oak, etc. like a few other dudes on this board. Cool article..

Jason,
In the late 80's and early 90's I used to ride over in Point of Rocks MD where we had a practice track and I still have one in Lovettsville at my parents place. I also used to ride and Congressman Rosco Bartlett's place when his son's Ross and Joe were still racing. I used to get to ride with guys like Billy Schlag and Jeff Yenzer over at Bartlett's track and he have an awesome outdoor track and a cool supercross track too. As for racing I hit the same places you did. Budds Creek, Antietam, White Oak, Aquasco,Happy Ramblers, pretty much all the District Seven tracks of the day. The Picture of me with the KX125 and both the 90 CR125 and CR250 pics were actually all taken at Antietam back in the day.

Rock and roll. I should have been hanging out your way with all those tracks...Laughing BillySchlag would have been too fast for me to hang with though. I was a big Aquasco fan. That place was epic with the sand.
I still get out to Hamilton quite a bit, since I have family out that way. Got my first bike in Leesburg. 79 XR80 at Bob's Honda!

Great read!..we're almost the same age so your stories and experiences in the 80s and early 90s really hit home..I had an 86 KX 125 (I bought it new and still have it - after having owned about 50 bikes in the past 10 years I can't believe I've kept that bike!)...I agree the 89/90 Hondas were probably the best looking of all the long travel bikes, I had bought an 89 CR 500 new at the ripe age of 18, man I wish I had kept that bike!....anyways thanks sharing and thanks for the trip down memory lane!
