It's a good thing Mo didn't get hurt in Canada; he'd still be on a gurney in a hallway a week later.

Our shit is free, for sure, but it's shit. I have a job, work hard, make a decent living and would far rather live in the US, at least as far as medical care is concerned. I tweaked my back slightly riding a couple weeks ago and gave up trying to find a Dr that was accepting new patients here...wasn't hurt bad enough to go to Emergency.

My Dad's wife flew back to Ukraine (from Canada) because it was a 6 month wait for the tests she needed - in the Ukraine she got in right away.

I am detracting from the original post and for that I am sorry - I couldn't help myself. R2R is a great organization as far as I can tell...just don't let ANYONE tell you health care is "better" in Canada!

Maybe you should have talked to Michael Moore. He seemed to be able to get taken care of no problem.

i get what you are saying. The NHS is swamped. It can be hit or miss, sometimes its great, other times not so much. The part that scares me about the States are the guys that are paying out for policies, have piece of mind but when shit hits the fan, the insurers still find a way out of paying. Maybe thats a misconception, but I couldn't imagine dealing with serious injuries and thinking about my new $100k debt.

America is the only first world industrialized nation where action sport athletes face these types of debacles (not to mention the 44,000 who die annually in this country every year due to a lack of health insurance). The average insurance plan for an America is somewhere around $8,000 dollars per person. The average yearly wages are somewhere around $24,000-27,0000. Now lets do some simple math. Do you really think your taxes would increase by $8,000 dollars a year if the government provided a public option?

I know it is hopeless trying to change the minds of some when it comes to political issues, but from an outsiders perspective (wait until the overseas people chim in), American politicians and the medical industrial complex that funds them are screwing the citizens of this country over.

That was just my retarded opinion.

The system is messed up. One of my good friends that I've ridden with since 1982 can't get insurance right now. He's 48, has only been in the hospital once for a femur in '98, has perfect blood pressure, but his blood work came back borderline diabetic. He wants to ride, but because he can't get health insurance, he can't ride.

I am opinionated, for sure, but the only idiots are the ones up here that figure that all of us getting the same crappy health care and waiting months to see a Dr. is the greatest system ever. I have seen stats that show us Canadians to be in the far bottom percentiles in the industrialized world for health care, but yeah dumbass, it's "free".

I did not pull the 2 examples I provided out of my ass.

Had lunch with a customer Monday who got hit in the head with a puck playing hockey the week before - and whose wife packed up the kids at 11pm at ngiht and drove him (concussion) an hour or more out of Calgary to a smaller town to get stitched up. Why didn't you just go to the hospital here in town, we asked. "Fuck that shit - I'd still be sitting in emergency" was his reply.

I was pondering trying to use my EMPLOYER PROVIDED travellers insurance in Phoenix when I was there for the SX to get my back looked at - I have better things to do (work / ride / drink beer) than make 100 phone calls in Calgary trying to find a Dr taking new patients or sit in a Medicentre or emergency for hours on end.

I hear the horror stories out of the US - do I want that system up here? Not really. Would it benefit me if it was? Probably make it easier to see a Dr, for sure, for the same or less cost to me. Granted, I have a job that would provide me with insurance either way. Is Obamacare going to do anything other than waste more of US taxpayers $? Not likely.

I hijacked the thread again - I couldn't resist. I'm sorry.

Yep he can't be denied now thanks to that evil "Obamacare" that everyone bad mouths and have no clue what it is. Plus cost must be in line with standard rates.
The thing that gets me is being denied for being out of network, I have never had to deal with that. Man what a load of shit that is.

First off, I'll chip in a donation to help Ryan out. Solid dude who needs our help, Im in $$$.

Second, I think what we want as Americans is if we pay for health insurance, our decision on which health care facility we go to is based on our health care needs and that we do not have to consult first with our health insurer in a time of need as to which facility they approve of and dissaprove of.

The health Insurance companies seem to accept and not accept health care facilities based on maximum profit motives, not maximum health care motives.

His family should try to get in touch with ARF (athlete recovery fund) they have done some great things and help get around bad areas with insurance

I read Carlos post because he took some heat for questioning how much money riders get so I looked at the financials Road2Recovery posts on their site. The latest was 2009. Bottom line for every 10 dollars given 1 dollar went to the rider.

http://www.road2recovery.com/docs/financials/ROAD%202%20RECOVERY%202009…

From what I can see.

Revenue $237,345
Expenses $253.448
Deficit - .58,678

When you look at their expense sheet it shows a bunch of expenses, The only one I could see related to giving riders money was the Injured Rider program in which they paid out $26,196

They also have listed as an asset, a insured rider Endowment which has been growing from year to year and is now at $280,000 and they bought a vehicle which is another asset at 23,000

By my calculations For every 10 dollars you give, only one makes it to the rider for the year of 2009. I am not an expert either so my numbers may be a little off, but not by much I think.

I don't think carlos is posting stupid stuff. I think someone needs to explain why in 2009, Only 1 dollar of every 10 taken in as revenue went to riders.

Until this is explained I would prefer to give money directly to the rider via paypal, They will get 100 percent up to 6 to 8 before gift taxes kick in, or 33 percent goes to the government. Better than 1 dollar out of 10. Carlos wanted to help by donating, I do too, does anyone have Ryans paypal account?

As sad as the situation is for Ryan and his family, I really can't beleive what i am reading here.

A professional motocross rider is injured and his health insurance won't pay for his medical care???
WTF???
Either the rider was kind of careless while choosing his insurance company, or the whole medical insurance system in the US is completly f**** up!

God damn, this is really sad, in every way!

Another question (sorry for my lack of knowledge):
Why is there no insurance for the riders coming from Feld. I mean every rider must have a racers-license, right? Is there no insurance included?

I've heard of people being denied because they're involved in a professional motorsport. (I'm not saying that's the case here.)

Like someone else said, you need to read the fine print on your policy.
1/26/2012 7:39am
Every pro rider or every rider for matter should have proper insurance. Proper health, life and long term disability insurance. Its not the insurance companies fault. But since it was an emergency I'm sure they will cover it.

What should discussed you isn't the insurance company, but that Feld pockets at least 10 mill a year and they can't even provide some decent insurance foe the guys they are making money off of. Feld could easily put 500k a year into a rider injury fund and let the funds grow while taking care of guys like Morias

Feld could also afford to help riders build up some kind of simple 401K for guys like JT$ and Kyle Lewis, guys that have spent their lives making supercross a better show.

This stuff will never happen because there's doesn't seem to be anyone with the balls that is smart enough to stand up to them. In the mean time, guy will continue to get hurt and beg for Money. And some wonder what's wrong with our sport.

It can be argued that the riders choose to be there and participate. If they want a job with benefits, maybe a factory job at GM would better suit them?

I'm not sure what the right answer is...and I can see both sides. Calling this a "failure" on Feld's part...is inaccurate though. IMO

Re: the statements on his insurance coverage and this being an out of network facility. Assuming this was an emergency surgery, they most likely be required to cover it as though it were in-network. If they deny it, he should appeal it immediately. I strongly suspect they'll cover as in-network. The only scenario I can envision where this wouldn't be the case is if, after his ER assessment, they (Ryan/his family) made the specific decision to stay at that facility, when he was otherwise clinically stable enough to be moved to an in-network facility. If that occurred, he will be responsible for any additional costs, per his policy.

If you haven't read your evidence of coverage, you should do so. It will allow you to know when/if your covered and in what situations.

Finally, ANY individual riding/racing motocross has a responsibility to have insurance before swinging a leg over a bike....

It's a shit system, the last thing someone should stress about in Ryan's position is wether they have the correct insurance policy to be looked after. In Australia no matter who you are, or how sick you are you'll always be cared for much like the NHS in the UK.

Ozzy, would love for your interprtation of what the US system is...Because you are talking about two separate things. He got treated. Every body get treated in this country. It is against the law to not treat anybody! Has been for a long time. Don't keep repeating lies that people don't get treated.

The real discussion is who will pay. Do you think insurance companies have humans that immediately look at every charge that come into thier system? Very frequently computers make decisions, which then need to get argued about and straightened out. Not saying the system is perfect.

You can brag on the NHS but I know better. Their standards gives me nightmares...Save your commercial for failing government health care systems.

I do know that the Aussie system that you are a part of does spend more money on orthopaedic medice than any other industrialized nation. I do not have first hand experiece with your heathcare systems, so I cannot comment.

And No I don't work for an insurance company. But I have been through the claims game before.

I have traveled the world working with physicians developing medical devices, and have seen many healthcare systems.
STFU Dont tread on Me you absolute moron!

i would like to stamp on you with that incorrect and generalising bullshit but this thread does not need hihacking for personal torment.

I hope the kid get sorted out and heals up soon, shame.

I don't think its a failure on Felds part, but they should offer up insurance, its just the right thing to do. The riders aren't just a slab of meet to sell, they're people with real lives and problems once injured.

Feld has the money to even self insure the riders by starting a fund, IMO its in their and the riders best interest and keeping the riders healthy is in felds best interest.

I don't know how much money they have, and am not in a position to be spending their money for them.

Seems Jimmy Albertson cleared a lot of this up, in the tread that is in the dungeon now...

Maybe someone that is currently an AMA licensed professional can answer this. The AMA had insurance for anyone competeing as a licensed professional at an AMA event that would cover any medical expenses when an injury occured. If the participant had primary insurance, then the AMA's insurance would pick up anything that the primary didn't/(ie ambulance) Is this still the case??? If it is, then Mo's surgery and costs associated with it should be picked up by the AMA policy since his primary is "out of network." Just a thought, maybe I'm wrong.

However, back to INDYMXR's post about a Pay Pal account being subject to taxes. If ths account is set up as a gift, how is it taxable? Does it have something to do with Pay Pal? CA state laws confirm to the federal law, it would not be taxable.

I'm not bashing R2R by any means.
