Would the TOP 5 guys in MX/SX even qualify for a national or SX on a bone stock bike? I mean right off the show room floor. Maybe tires to suit the conditions but NOTHING else. Adjust the clickers and sag but absolutely no other mods. I'd say yes they could but I'd like to see where they'd finish. Maybe answer the question of "how much is bike and how much is rider."

And how much that would affect rider safety...

Re positions, I doubt it would change too much, 95-98% rider..

Re Safety, I would like to think none at all!!! MXdad#27 - Do you really think we're being sold unsafe bikes???

At a National, all 5 guys would qualify on a bone stock 450, and still finish inside the top 20, probably inside the top 10.

I've always wondered if the top guys setup is so much different than what's available to the public that they wouldn't even have fun on a well setup stocker, or want to ride it.

I don't think rider safety would be too huge of a concern.

IMO we would still see the top 5 running in good positions, but each would attack the track drastically different than how they attack it now. Simply put, stock bikes are not equipped for supercross at the top level. The biggest issues being the motor and suspension. Most stock motors would struggle (250f's especially) trying to triple out of a corner. And for the whoops I would imagine with stock suspension we would see people jumping through them rather than skimming them.

I think the suspension would be the biggest factor. IMO a stock motor would be much less of a disadvantage to factory suspension from FC or PC. To be honest I don't think these guys would ride a pro sx track with stock suspension, that could get nasty...

LOL on that same note that is why many 14,15,16 year olds don't belong on a stock 450! Smile

Interesting question. I remember Desalle apparently being on an "almost" stock bike at Washougal in 09, admittedly not completely stock. As tbanks said I think Supercross would be far more of a struggle than MX.

Motocross I'd expect the top guys to occupy very near their regular position - maybe not so much in the 250f class where power is more of an issue. But in a 450 National, stick RD and RV on a bone stock SXF and KXF 450s and I'd still expect to see those guys battling up front... everyone else would be nearer though, and a rider of similar speed (CR) would probably beat them.

So yes it would make a difference (magnified in SX) but as will all know it still mostly comes down to the rider.

To ask if they'd qualify is silly. They would still beat the majority of the others out there.

This should be a new topic but I always wondered what would happen if you swapped lites and 450's bikes only. For example everyone in the 450 class on a 250f and see how the results add up. That would be pretty cool to watch

Remember that time KW busted out the 250F a few years ago? Went pretty bad...
RV would kill it (I wish he could ride a 250F for MXdN).

Qualify? Not only would they qualify for a National, they would more than likely finish top-ten.

the definition of "stock" has really changed over the years. bikes used to come with steel painted bars that would bend just by looking at them. steel sprockets and chains that lasted one ride. steel subframes that bent in the first crash. graphics that fell off the first time you washed the bike.

this is not ancient history, we are talking late 90s. i remember you had to replace the chain, sprockets, bars (and triple clamps), pegs the moment you bought the bike.

They would absolutely do well, but it would be a scary, dangerous ride. The motors are close enough in the 450 class, but the suspension would be woefully inadequate for national-level pros. They'd be crashing a lot in the first few laps until they realized how the stock boingers behaved.

In 2010 De Dycker went 8-11 at Hangtown on a stock 450 Yam, but he did have his own suspension.

Q: Ken, how did you enjoy your trip to Hangtown for the opening round of the AMA Nationals?

De Dycker: It was okay the weather was okay. You don’t have your own things, just a stock bike and just my suspension, that makes it difficult. Also with it just being Saturday it’s just 15 minute moto for practice and it’s difficult to get to know the track.

Didn't Lechein win a SX on a bone stock Kawi 250 back in the 80s?

suspension and brakes are huge factors with those guys, my guess would be top 10 tough.

Didn't Chisholm just take the King of Bercy title on a nearly stock bike?

Bob Hannah won some Supercross races on a stock 77 YZ 250.

I would be willing to bet that if you put the top 10 guys on stock bikes at a national - at least 3 of them will dnf with a blown motor. The rest will still finish in the top 10. And it it's Barcia, you'll have a 100% chance of a seized motor...

qualify for a nat on a 100% stock bike, absolutely. For a SX, no way for sure. Not on stock forks. The shock on stock bikes could maybe handle it, the forks on all, no way. Not the way the top 5 ride. even if they took it easy, the first time they hit the whoops..... bad things.

now if the question was stock bike except for revalved and resprung forks and shock, absolutely in SX. They could qualify, run up front, no. 15-10 maybe.

I know all the top guys are honed to a razors edge and basically melded to their particular mounts with speed/control the ultimate aim...but I always thought it would be cool to have like a moto version of the old IROC series where every rider is on exactly the same model of bike. Something unfamiliar to most riders....say a 700cc Maico...lol. (I know this is unrealistic and probably downright unsafe but this is just bench racing which doesn't have to follow the rules of gravity).
