Why not run electric bikes at the SX

Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 7:22pm
I know this is kind of out there.......

There are several electric MX bikes now on the market. I think it would be great to see them race at intermission at the SX, right after the wee ones on the KTM's.

I have never seen one at the track, so I don't know what all they can really do. I think it would be cool to see a small "go green" effort.

Just makes the race more interesting. Some of these electric MX bikes are supposed to have similar capabilities as our rice burners. They are not just cheap toys, some carry price tags in the $9,000 range.

Here is one brand.

Alright never mind....I just would like to see more variety during intermission.

What are your suggestions? Monster Trucks?

80's or a 125 two stroke class only.

http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/ Here is another. I still think it would make a cool demo race.

I like the idea of the 2 stroke race. Let locals qualify.

Our local "No-Jump" class would be fun to watch on a SX track.

No jump? Sounds like the ktm jr. sx challenge. I say have an 80 class. There are kids out there that would fly around an sx track.

At our SX, they had 5 guys dress up in gear and run around the track on foot holding motorcycle handlbars to "race". Yea, that was really swell. If you want fans to run to teh concessions, why not just set the seats on fire instead.

Yes, I would prefer to watch electric MX bikes, BMX and WMX SX compared to that.

Yeah. Good thing that never happens with regular motorcycles. Wink

The guys from Zero called our office yesterday, and we should get a chance to ride one of their bikes soon.

That would be cool. Then at a big first turn pile up someones battery pack will be in close proximity to Chad Reed's gigantoid ear hardware and zap him impotent. Can I buy tickets yet?

I know I'm just wondering if the same thing would happen on an electric.

Really? I mean, who would want to see those things, totally silent, rolling around a SX track? Come on! Everyone complains about the show at a SX now, what do you think would happen if you put bikes out there that roll all the big stuff and are totally silent? Might as well have a bicycle race.

Jimmy Lewis and Emig did an exhibition race at Mini Moto SX year before last. And then they had another electric race at this years. I didn't pick up on the crowd reaction (or lack there of). The only excitement was watching Emig the year before and then (who was the pro last year? Albertyn?) come from behind.

I'm sure the future is electric bikes, but they are a long way off still.

They need to add more racing to the event to keep fans watching I think it's not a bad idea and some of those electric bikes I bet could jump some of the doubles and such.

I think they should do the pit bike races during an intermission, like they did before the night program all last year. Hell, even the 80's, as was suggested earlier, but don't enforce a no jump rule. I agree, they need more racing. I think dropping the semi's was stupid.

The electric bikes cleared everything on the Mini Moto SX track but that's not saying a lot. The track was really tame this year.

it's a great idea. too bad the Japanese OEMs don't think so, or it would have already happened by now...

umm you guys are forgetting that you would have to listen to terry boyd scream the whole time about scott goggles and monster energy with no bike noise to block it out!

the only problem with 80s Emig brought out at the US Open. It makes the sport lose credibility when 14 year old are doing the triples.

Easy fix for the "no sound" issue:

Put a PA speaker on each electric cycle, run a microphone up to the helmet, and have the riders make "braap", "vroom-vroom", and "whaaaah" sounds while circulating the course. The winner would be based on track position and who makes the best dirtbike sounds while racing.

If nothing else, it'd be hysterical.
