I went from an '06 YZ250F to an '09 YZ250 and I never looked back. Just do it and you'll love it. There's stuff about the thumper that's easier and desirable, but overall, it'll be nothing but a barrel of monkeys.

bad ass, straight up bro.

i still hum around on my 2001 YZ250 from time to time, bike is so much fun
I found a guy selling an 01 YZ250 in decent shape needs new plastics has all DMV paper work (title) WITH riding gear (2 sets) for $700!!!!! Dammit if I had the coin i wouldve bought it straight up ......rode it a little to make sure she was mechanically sound, given it some new plastics and graphics, i easily could've doubled my money for a quick sale posibly got close to tripling my money......I still may do it....Be good for an extra bike also.

We just rolled an '012 YZ250 into our garage for my son, he's ridden it stock twice and loves the thing. PC pipe/silencer and VForce reeds will be here Thursday, then we might put a flywheel weight on it. I haven't ridden it (although I've had a lot of fun riding his old '08 YZ125) but from the first lap, he looked like he was born on that bike.

gnarly... yeah clean her up and put a little love into it and it'd be a great bike.

i use mine as an extra and will usually take it on riding trips just in case anyone breaks down. every time i let someone use it for a day i get nothing but compliments about how fun it is.

the 2001 was a great year i agree

Peelout that is EXACTLY what I planned to to with her and I GUARANTEE that's all she would need to look like a million bucks again. What irritates me regarding having 2 bikes are my buddies.....I have a group of friends that maintain their bikes meticulously (i know bec I'm usually there and helping plus they got into riding about 10 years ago So they are all geeked up about riding....they have the WORST Luck with their bikes, all 3 of them have the strangest catastrophic engine failures ....crankcases etc its like a black cloud that follows them.

My point is, since I have 2 bikes EVERYONE and their mother thinks the bikes are there for everyone's use ....I let one of my buddies ride my 01 which is set up perfectly for the hills and trails while I rode my 06 set up for a fast socal novice.....worst exp of my life, it beat the shit outta me! Never again ....I'm not trying to be stingy but my bikes are not for everyone's use esp when I know its gonna be ridden in one if the gnarliest socal desert spots and I wont be there in case something happens annnnd there's the friends that barely ever ride they lemme use your extra bike" ill find them a super cheap deal on a good bike like this "nah I don't want to buy a bike, just lemme use yours" .... Irritating its assumed my bikes are for everyone's use sometimes ill do it if in a pinch but its getting ridiculous being asked over and over esp when I plan on riding the 01 in the hills "you can use your 06" ........no its not fun riding a full on moto bike in the hills ..sorry if that makes me look like a stingy prick its not the case I just don't want to get my bikes damaged and have a repair bill come between me and my friends....happened before a long time ago after a friend used my bike and returned it plastics destroyed and pipe smashed .... Shit got weird "dude its just plasics scratched up and that fist sized dent won't hurt performance" apparently since it wasn't his bike (still doesn't own one buy asks to use mine all the time to the sand dunes of all places) he just let if flip and fall all over the place that day while laughing is what I was told those are the reasons I don't lend out my bikes..... Sorry just needed to vent a little

i hear ya...

here's a quick version of my story.

i broke my shock on my 450 just before a big riding trip in nevada. i borrowed my buddies immaculate 2004 YZ 250. i should have checked the entire bike over more than once before taking it, because 5 minutes into the first ride she seized up the bottom end. tranny turned to junk. upon closer inspection, there was no oil drain bolt. problem is, it isn't like it fell out on the trail because we checked the entire half mile that we made it and there wasn't a single spot of oil.

only thing i can come up with is that it was never there in the first place. ultimately my fault. luckily i had purchased an entire 2004 motor for the top end on ebay the year prior and just tore the cases apart and switched it out. she runs like a top now.

i hate borrowing bikes

I got a brand spanking new 2011 YZ250 in the garage right now that I'm getting ready. Just put a V-Force 3 and Pro Circuit Works pipe w/ a PC Shorty 304. I'm a huge Pulp MX fan and one time Matthes (former Yamaha Factory mechanic) said to go with this combo and your good to go rip it up at the races.I also sent my suspension out to Factory connection to get dialed cause I'm so light on it @ 143 lbs. I preffer Renthal Emig bend over the pro tapers so swapped those as well. Just going to order some renthal intell levers, a gripper seat, numbers, and I'm all set. I did'nt get a chance to ride the KTM 250 SX in 2011 or 2012 so I cant say how they were but I was really thinking of getting the 2012 over the 2011 YZ250 just because of all the updates that bike has recieved. The deciding factor for me was the price of OEM parts....much more $$$ for KTM in case you ever blow up or just your regular top end replacement. Ive never experienced one problem on a YZ250...ever.
Why do people continue to claim that KTMs are so expensive to work on when it just isn't true.

I just got over 4 years out of 250SX (many top end changes) before a crank bearing began to make crunchy noises last week.

The only thing wrong w/ it upon diassembly was 1 main bearing and it needs a new top end but I went ahead and ordered EVERYTHING. Every seal, rod kit, new top end, bearings, misc washers, the crank keys, etc... Total cost from my local KTM dealer w/ 8% sales tax is $529! For a complete and total 'like new' rebuild.

Now I'm building it into a 314cc stroker kit so the Falicon stroked crank is going to add $700 but that's another story.

Great stuff DV! I see you prefer the FMF over the pro circuit exhaust, I would be interested in hearing the differences for you.

My 2010 KX250F is up for sale, found a 2010 YZ250 in good condition i'm looking at now.

got my 04 yz 125 in 08 and been a very solid bike for me. this year i have finally gotten to the brittle bolts and tranny issues and gonna b getting another yz 125 (06-09). but i am surprised at how durable the bike has been. im also small at 147lbs and ride decently fast.

i absolutely love the clean minimal stickers look of a bike. did same to my 04yz 125. what wsa the cost of the Eric Gorr 144 work, and have you had any reliability issues. i am getting a 06-09 yz125 pretty soon and contemplating on athena, gorr, or la sleve 144 kits.

I have had a 08 yz250 & currently run an 09, i have run on both a v-force & a HGS pipe & silencer - this works for me & sounds superb, great bikes & very hard to beat.

Been down the 4t route - totaly uninspiring & just soooo boring to ride, have yet to try a 012 sx 250 but would like to just compare to my YZ.

If all the manufactures that build and or sell 2strokes had a free ride/ test day at their local tracks. I bet a lot more poeple would sell and or trade their 4strokes.. That includes Service Honda/Kawasaki 250/500AFs...

I believe DV runs a FMF Fatty and a PC Shorty Silencer. He's ran this combo since his Yamaha factory days. I am very interested on his thoughts on the combo too.
