We all have some crazy stories for sure. i know I have my share, both buying and selling.
However some of my all time "favorite" things with people selling on Cl or the like have to be:
A stock photo from the manufactures website or a pic they took off the net, then they write " not my bike in the pic, but looks just like it"
Geezuz is it that hard to take a pic of your bike?
or how about the guy that doesn' put a price on their bike.. you contact and they say "make me an offer".. you must have an idea of what you want? I usually just keep truckin'
My all time favorite have to be the ad with out a pic, or just a blurry small pic, I contact and ask if they can send more pics that are a bit more detailed as i live 500kms from them.. they come back with " no more pics, come have a look at it"... WOW
I spec in various places in bold NO TRADES, and take & post lots of pics. Try to be fair with asking price. I would never post my phone number - but it's unlisted to start with and my wife would justifiably freak if I put it in a Kijiji ad. Emails only, at first. If emails go OK, I'll send my cell number - easy to reply to emails when you have a chance, PITA to talk thru crap phone calls at all hours.
Once the freaks are weeded out thru a couple emails, I have had great luck selling. Last thing was a KX65 the kids got tired of, guy drove 2 hours and handed over the cash I was asking for - even after the thing wouldn't start at first due to a fouled plug (that was highly embarassing).
Here's one you guys might not believe but it's 100% accurate. Those guys everyone bitches about that don't post the pictures etc. Well those ads are the ones that have been the best deals for me. If there is an obvious smoking deal on Craigslist it's hard to be the first one there. Like you said most people just pass over those ads and the little extra detective work has payed off for me numerous times.
Hands down the best deal I ever got read something like this. Free CBR 600 free to first person who gets here. Bike is a 1997 CBR600 f3 and needs carburetor work, the local Honda dealership will not work on a bike older than a 2000 model so I would rather give it to someone who could fix it and get some use out of it. No calls text only. I should also mention the ad had no pictures.
I sent the guy a text saying if the bikes not completely totaled, and has a title, I will give $300 for it and be there that evening ( I was at work and couldn't leave immediately". He replies "It's a beautiful motorcycle, just needs work, and my offer sounds great". I show up that evening to find a beautiful CBR F3 with 1200 miles on it, corbin seat, new tires, new battery, and he hands me a clean title with current tags. I had that baby ready to ride that night. The reason for "text only"? The guy was a foreign exchange student and could barely speak english.

Thats why you always start the price higher than you want to get for it. Cause as a buyer if you pay the asking price your an idiot in most circumstances.
IMO a stock bike is worth more than heavly modded one. Thats why you keep the stock parts so you can sell the aftermarket ones on ebay for bank!
Also on craigslist ad's are super important. Just two years ago I bought a mint stock 06 yz125 for $1850 because the ad sucked and the bike was dirty. I cleaned the bike up, bought new handle bars and rode it for 2 months than sold it for $2500! I made bank just because I know how to sell, I do it on ebay every week with paintball and mx
I make between $500 and $800 a month from just cleaning them up, parting out, and having a good ad.
I had also posted the ad on Facebook's Marketplace, and had a guy that lived nearby call a few weeks later, saying he saw my ad and was interested in the bike. He ended up finding it from Google. I brought it over to his house, and he ended up being a stand-up guy and super easy to deal with. He had a cute daughter around my age, too, but I wasn't about to go there! He asked me to take a quick test ride on it so he could see it ran as I stated, and after talking a little bit, he bought it on the spot for $100 under asking price. I'll list for a little over what I'm really looking for anyway, so I wasn't worried about that.
I agree with what someone else said about not having potential buyers come to your house/where you keep the bike. You just never know. Also, I do two copies of a Bill of Sale, and have M.S.O. in hand (had title too in the case of my 250F) and won't let someone test ride (don't want someone getting hurt and possibly suing me, or the bike getting yard saled). However, I will be glad to start it up or do a quick ride myself.

It gives you more time to fish....quicker runs etc. to spots.
When I lived up up North we would at times on the Columbia make 60 to 70 mile runs to spots (120 -140+ miles round trip)
locking through dams etc.. (gotta make it on time when the locks are open or else you are stuck).Running to different spots depending on the tides etc...and times of day. Most entry fees are from $250...up to $2,000 per event.That tournament there was just a small one...$250 for entry & to get into all the options.But when there is a couple grand or 50k & sometimes more on the line,every little thing counts.
It's kinda like any other sport...you do what you can do to give yourself an advantage.
I'm so sick of people low-balling me by over $1,000 dollars.
1st. When they low ball you and follow it up with CASH.. I'll give you 1,100 CASH. WTF, does the guy think I'm going to take a personal check or something. I wouldn't consider any non-cash offer in the first place.
2nd. When they try to justify a low ball offer with saying - I'll need to replace the tire or something like that. If I'm advertising a used bike at a fair price, why should I be paying to put new parts on the bike - it's advertised as used.
Had someone do both to be a few weeks ago. I had no response other than "this bike isn't for you" & pushed it back in the garage. No counter or anything. A 1/2 hour later he called me up and said he would pay my asking price.
