Yep. And Honda quoted the 1997 CR250 frame as over 4 pounds lighter than the 1996 frame and we know it has only gotten slimmer since then.

"Yamaha alloy frames were splitting and cracking like nobodies business."

Exaggerate much? I've never personally seen one crack and I'll bet most others on here haven't either.

"Find some actual weights of aluminum frames being lighter and get back with us."

TWMX on the 2005 YZ250: Huge changes adorn the ‘05 premier class entrant, most notably an aluminum frame that is a whopping 4.5 pounds lighter than the steel unit it replaces.

MXA on the 2006 YZ250F: The 2006 aluminum frame is lighter, the mass is better centralized, the top-heaviness is gone and, if we were just comparing old to new, the new frame is better than the old one.

MXA on the 2006 KX250F: Not only did the geometry improve, but the aluminum frame also netted the KX250F a two-pound weight reduction that would have been impossible with the old steel frame.

Test on the '97 CR250R: "Other advantages of the frame design are a lower center of gravity, a four pound weight savings..."

De Coster used this system on his works Suzuki in '79 and reckoned it was the tits.

He convinced Honda to start to develop it but they shelved it due to cost.

They were ragging on the KTM "forward thinking" and their chromoly frame, but can't prove the aluminum Japanese frames are lighter. So even though they are still most likely wrong they have to rely on comparing to old technology.....as in rearward thinking for their weight comparisons. And even those comparo's seem to be from the magazine articles that many of the vital faithful refer to as "bullshit". I know, it's funny.....Smile

Back when Yamaha had the YZ400F( or 426), Gary Jones (some of you might find him to be a reputable source)built a light weight project and knocked off about 40 lbs. from the bike. One of the items he had built was a true chromoly frame and he said it was eleven (as in 11) pounds lighter than the stock Yamaha steel frame.

I love how everyone says KTM is so forward thinking. Yeah, that steel frame is sure state of the art. So they slap on some nice bars and a hydraulic clutch. Big deal. People bitch about the 97 CR250 as a failure but the aluminum frame has brought MX a long way. Aluminum frames are about 6 lbs lighter than the steel ones and allow the suspension, axles, bearings, brakes, etc. to be beefier. Put the weight where you need it. Aluminum frames also last longer and look better. I don't miss the days of rusty, worn off paint, cracks and all that.
post of the year, hope to god dungey doesn't get on one.

EL-Bing'Fing-GO! Wasnt that Steve Whitelocks doing? those names were almost as embarrassing as his awkward presentations of the #1 plates to the series champions.
