This should be a good discussion.

When my wife got pregnant the 1st time. I really had to "ManUp" and start thinking in a more responsible adult like way. Once a child is here they are yours until you die. I had to start being more consistant with my pesonal time and I had to plan for the future. Until that happened we still lived a very beachy spontanious existence.

Hard work, heartbreack and taking chances followed by either success or failure. You learn from both.

Word to that.

Marriage has challenged to be more understanding of change, and to be more open to changes that I might have previously closed myself off to.

Kids are the same. I can't tell you how often in my day when I get frustrated, or when my son is getting on my nerves, I think to myself "He looks up to me, he's watching", and I instantly regain my cool - like I could be Superman if he asked me to.

Marriage & Kids IMO has definitely brought about the most growth for me. However, I feel it has stunted my growth in other areas as well... for example - our sex life!

Yea good point about marriage, you have to learn to be open more than when you are single. Thing is marriage is work and most people don't work at it anymore. I have been at it for 29 years now and it hasn't been easy. Doesn't mean it won't last either. I just saw that in our family with a 30 year marriage down the tubes. I am definately more considerate of others than when I was single, not sure if that is always a good thing.LOL. And yes when the little shit looks at you like you are the answer it really does get to you. Enjoy it while you can they grow fast.

The birth of my kids. I never thought that I was the "father" type, but that all changed when the boys were born. I can't imagine life without them. I can't get enough of them two little buggers and there isn't anything that I wouldn't do for them.

Mine happened over my whole life. When I was young racing all my dad could ever tell me was that I didnt try hard enough and how I let to many outside stuff disract me or what are you doing letting soandso beat you. When I was 17 I raced the 125 nationals and my dad did nothing but call me a loser becouse this person or that person was beating me and how I didnt train hard enough even though I was training my ass off.
Going into the next season he was all over me becouse of a girl and I told him he could take motorcycles and racing and stick it up his ass. I went on a 6 year selfdestruct mode. When he moved to the mid west to retire I didnt even go say goodbye.

His words huanted me for a long time and to this day I am seriously over driven becouse of it. When I was 27 I woke up one day realizing that while I may have stuff I really have nothing. I realized that no matter what you have or how much you have its nothing if your not happy. I started attending a church and my life has never been the same.

At first I thought this would be an easy one to answer, but the more I thought about it the harder it got. At my age I've gone through so many stages it gets pretty complicated. It's actually easier to say which period has been the least productive in personal growth. I'd have to say since I moved to Vegas.

Very good responses men. I like the part about marriage & children.

From 85-87 I learned some serious financial lessons. It was a painful time. I started my business in may of `85. I also had a Mercedes that we lost 6k on (poor choice on my part). I got a credit card and racked up 3k in debt. Then we got another one and had another 3k. Interest was real high. I paid them all off in late 87 and wouldn't you know it, the day I mailed off the final check we got a credit card offer in the mail !! My wife & I laughed long about that.

This lesson saved us thousands over the next 20-years. We started buying things when we had the money in hand and not before. Still that way.. (except for real estate).

Thanks for the story uptite. We remember those days well, and I'm sorry it happened. Jeremy McGrath had a similar experience sitting in Mitch Payton's office in 92. God is in the business of changing lives through healing, forgiveness and His power.

In high school, I was voted "Most Likely To Be Incarcerated" so decided to join the military. Those 5 years of my life I really grew up and learned to deal with all sorts of personalities. Learned disipline, responsibility, humility, etc...has to be the period in my life where I grew the most...

I dunno about personal growth, but 5 years of abusive and otherwise detrimental relationships and trying to kill myself to escape all the bullshit definitely put some things in perspective.

When my dad got sick and eventually passed away. The concept that life has a beginning and an end, the end of life is a real event, and the time alloted to us is finite has led me to be a lot more engaged in living. Knowing that one day I'll definitely die, the life I now live on the earth will definitely end, makes me more conscious that life is a gift to be used with passion and gratitude.

Having our first kid was a key moment in my life, even though it's been about 30 years ago now.
The latest period of personal growth started in '05 when my mother in law suffered a debilitating stroke that left her paralyzed on the left side and incontinent. Since that time my wife has spent 3-4 days a week taking care of her in her home about 10 miles away. At the same time our youngest moved out and suddenly our house got a lot bigger - and empty. I guess they call it "empty-nest syndrome"?
Late last year my father also had a stroke, but not as serious as the mom in law. My mother has had early signs of Alzheimers and she has been getting more and more childlike as time goes on. Dad is likely suffering from depression, as he tries to care for Mom by himself. I spend time with them when I can, along with my brother and sisters who all live nearby. We are reaching the point where we all are sharing responsibility taking them to Dr. appointments and checking up on them etc.
I have friends and family that offer their condolences, which is appreciated, but for some reason I haven't reached the point of feeling sorry for myself and my wife yet. I feel like it's just the next chapter in our lives. It does present a different perspective on life and the things that are important.
I have a feeling the next few years will be a time of personal growth that rivals when we had our first kid.

What good came out of those experiences, SK?

Well, I don't date men who are ten years my senior anymore. I don't move to other cities to date guys who won't stop cheating on me anymore. Let's see... I also don't let guys hit me anymore, throw me around, or control my life with jealous BS.

I don't think any of that is "growth" as much as learning lessons about self-respect, that I probably should have learned long before I had to.

Maybe you should forgive yourself, then your Dad and reconnect. Over driven? Can you be over driven? IMO, you certainly can be fixated on the wrong things but not over driven.

Those are all excellent things to learn. Good for you, some never learn it despite repeated lessons. What's the old definition of mental illness? "Repeating the same behaviors and always expecting a different outcome."

You've got an edgy sense of humor that indicates how bright you are. Learning to balancing intelligence with emotions is an on going process. Hang in there.

How's your father & mother doing?
5/17/2008 4:53pm
My relationships with my parents are pretty textbook for a girl who has a pattern of bad relationships. Emotionally absent father (physically too, he was a civilian contractor with the air force and traveled a lot until I was about 11 years old), very close to my mother, but very little discipline while growing up. I really should have been in more trouble, actually, but my father being an alcoholic the little time he was around scared me into a fear of authority that lasted until I was old and smart enough to not get caught breaking rules.

Additionally, my parents have a terrible relationship and I've been asking my mom since I was thirteen when they were going to get divorced. I wrote a paper on myself for my developmental psychology class in college. Smile And now I've hijacked your perfectly pleasant thread.. My bad.

Uh, and if anyone who reads this happens to meet me and my dad at High Point, it'd be nice if this didn't come up. It's not like any of it's a secret but it's an awkward conversation. :D

I wrote this huge story and decided to delete it. I have had so many ups and downs its crazy. But I am getting a lesson as we speak. I recently fractured my back and was in a nightmare for the last half a year and kind of still living it. I have been riding weekly for so long and really thought I would never stop. In a blink of an eye things can change. All my friends know me to be so active. I do MX, guide, surf, travel the country fishing tournaments etc. These things consume me. I had to give up my position in two major tournament series this year that I have worked my whole life to get to. My recovery is long but I will make it, I am walking. I feel as if my life has changed completely. Before last year I was on a roll for a few. Worked constantly, Flipped a few houses and got our dream home, all time money winner in local poker club for last bunch of years plus took a bit of Vegas money during Open a few years back, Killing it in the fishing tourney's, got to pay off some debts and help my parents, riding great and a lot, wife, kid all great but it all takes a lot of work and now I am broken. I was feeling like I could do no wrong before this injury. Motocross saved me in my teen years as most of my friends didn't make out to well in life and when I got a chance to get back into it after my parents could not afford it, I wanted to get my head right and be competitive and it kept me doing the right thing in all aspects of life. My parents are poor so I am proud of what I have been able to achieve. I wish the best for all of you. We could all go on for ever with life stories I am sure. When local people ask me how I made it out alive, I let them know that motocross created the man I am today. I always get a strange look but I believe this and will always appreciate what this sport has done for me. I pray I will ride again.

I should have a huge post count but only have nine now so this is another start in itself. Noob all over.
