Not long ago his name came up, and someone said something about him still being around? (ya lots of help that is lol) Might of been in the oldschool section of the forum. Its worth trying a search...

Here's the info I have for Don Serrano:

3501 Soda Canyon
Ceres, CA.
(209) 538-3188

I'm pretty sure Don Serrano is still doing work. He did 2 off-road car helmets for me (1 for my driver and 1 for me, I'm the co-driver) a few years ago and they came out great. I'd post a pic of mine but unfortunately it was stolen at the Baja 1000 a couple of yrs ago. He has done quite a few moto helmets for me and always does great work & is reasonably priced. He has done work for a ton of pros, most notably (that I can recall): Broc Glover, Rick Ryan, Steve Lamson, Danny Sullivan (Indy Cars), Ricky Graham (Flat Track) and a ton of others that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

It's true that many of the custom helmet painters have faded away, I'm sure that is largely due to the fact that the production helmets have gotten so much better. Environmental issues and material costs are other reasons, as well. I have painted a few helmets myself and am starting to paint another right now & can tell you- to make any money you have to have a production line going (painting several pieces at once), either that or your material and/or work will be sub-par in order to make a profit. It is time consuming if you are focused on quality, even for the painters that are pretty quick at it.

Nice stuff in this thread. I really like the stuff Tagger did for Izzi's helmets a few years back. It was really unique then. Many of the regional artists are very good.
I have to agree the production helmet thing is tired, that was posted way back in the first page.

Is Barry still painting helmets? I herd he was doing a bunch of boats and cars. I hope he made some bank off of his Pastranna lid design Shoei mass produced.

Vitals own SND used to do some mean helmets for a bunch of the cactory riders......he did my favorite helmet.

Troy Lee paint isnt what it used to be and way over priced...I just had a MC replica done (its on their site) and I was dissapointed...lots of imperfections.
Does anyone have any pics of that old DV helmet that was painted like Lui Vatton purse?
That's because the "back in the day" TLD helmets of the stars were painted by Troy himself...

Nowadays the only thing he does to them is sign his name the the JapaneseAmerican looking fellow and the others do the rest.

This top 10 list should be, Top-10 Sticker appliers. Not much helmet painting going on here. These guys use plotters and printers more than a airbrush.

Hi guys,
I have read your thoughts about the helmet designs. Let me introduce myself, I am Julia, and I am a helmet graphic designer. I would be very happy if you could take a look at my website, where in the Gallery I have more than 40 finished designs. I would be very interested in your opinions!
Thank you! My website is: http://www.barthdesigns.hu

A new helmet design that I started playing around with. Mostly working on the design of the helmet itself, but kind of just adding "paint" to see what might work. Thoughts from the moto community out there?

Ya know this is something that has really died off in MX. I remember when I was a kid I always looked forward to seeing MC's new paint-job for the year. The magazines even did articles with photos of all the pro's helmets. Wish the gear companies would let guys run custom painted helmets again, it gave the riders more personality.
Couldn't agree with you more. The problem I believe is that in the past the riders like MC were bigger than the sport itself and so he could let his personality take center stage. Now we get glimpses of riders personalities but they are overshadowed by corporate logos the money it brings. If you look at F1, corporate sponsors blend themselves into the drivers helmets allowing for some artistic masterpieces. I believe JMD is today what Troy Lee was in the 90's. I am sure helmet painters don't mind getting paid for painting the same thing every week, but I am sure it drives them crazy not being able to bring out riders personalities through art.
