to conserve fuel and I've made a commitment to myself to just drive the speed limit. Any body else try this? It's stressful to say the least. I feel as if I'm the only one on the road that is worried about the price of fuel. Everybody is flying buy me like I'm going about 15 miles an hour below the speed limit. It's crazy! People do know that the faster you drive the more gas you use don't they? When fuel is at $5.00 a gallon will they still be driving like they are winning the Indy 500? Diesel went up 6 more cents on me last night and I was like , dammit, I knew I should of filled up. Who else is feeling the pain? Anyone? Nobody here in Texass except me. I know this as they are all blowing by me like they are getting their gas for free! What am I missing???

I have to fill up 2 diesel trucks 2 times a week. I used to drive 85, now its 65-70. I found a website that shows you how to make diesel fuel for .70 which is great. I find out that if you get cought with it its a major fine for not paying the manditory gas tax. what a bunch of shit that is.

You aren't completely alone MT. I'm trying to slow down...tickets and gas prices...

It's tough to drive the speed limit here. I drive to downtown FW every day, coming in from the west. If I get in the left lane, everyone is doing about 70 or more and occasionally I'll get someone that want to go a lot faster....but, I'm trying to slow down, so I move over one or two to the right. Now, you get some folks that want to drive 50 so you really feel like a slug.

Very few actually drive the speed limit (60).

Yeah Ive been pissing off a few drivers myself. I still tend to drive about 5mph over the posted limit but thats still slow enough to piss a lot of people off. And I see people in big trucks and SUVs with their foot buried going up hills. I guess it all has to do with how much money one has.

What Ive been concentrating on isnt so much my top speed though. Ive been trying to get to speed smoother, like leaving a traffic light "more gently" much to the angst of my fellow drivers. Ive added a few pounds of extra air to my tires. And Ive cleaned my MAF sensor.

i've been driving much slower, often below the speed limit. i haven't passed a single vehicle yet. yes, it's killing me but so is my gas bill.

i ride my streetbike much more too.

i read an article recently that said something to the effect of, if you slow to 55 from 65, it's equivalent to paying $0.53 per gallon less.

I just heard on this stock market show that for the past two months that gasoline demand in California actually dropped. 8% and 6% . So somebody out there is cutting back.

My car is at 28.5 mpg average right now Smile
I also dont drive faster then 73-ish. And I dont slam on the gas at green lights. But I still get taken at the gas pump. It sucks.

A few weeks back my wife and I had to make a run to another town and on the way back we weren't pressed for time (and traffic was really, really light) so I decided to try cutting back to 55 instead of 65. Made almost a 6MPG difference! There was a slight difference in elevation, though, so I'd imagine that the "real" difference was probably closer to 2-4MPG. I'll slow down if time isn't an issue, but if I have to be somewhere and haven't left too early, I'll just pay the cost......

That business about fining you for making your own diesel is absolutely loathsome.

I'm going to run out and buy a big gas guzzling SUV with shiny 22's and then do 90mph on the freeways. I hear you can get a good deal on one of those now. Sweet!

I drive a Civic that gets 40mpg. It barely can do 80, unless one of those diesel trucks doing 80 rear ends me. Then I get up to 80 pretty quick.

(my diesel stays parked until I load the bikes on the weekend)

I keep it below 55 unless I'm on interstate highways or the NJTP. My Echo doesn't like going faster than about 75mph anyway.

I live and work on the west side also (w loop 820 and 30) and I was actually telling my wife last week that I have noticed people driving slower. My main thing is to keep it under 70 and not do any jack-rabbit starts.

I've got a sign that says: "Will work for fuel"
5/12/2008 3:23pm
The outfit I work for has us working 6 days a week...5 tens and six hours on Saturday. I keep trying to get them to either work us 5 eleven hour days or give us ten hours on Saturday. I only live about 15 miles from work, but I spend $197 a month on gasoline just driving back and forth to work. If I drove around like I did 3-5 years ago, you'd have to double that figure.

Indeed. I remember scraping together my pennies during my high school times and early days in college... so I could drive 4 hours... race 2 motos, then drive 4 hours home.

Sure, there were closer ones which were awesome.. but almost all tracks are an hour plus from where I lived.

I can't even imagine what that would cost now... the "expensive gas" was $1.35 then...

I take the train to work so gas prices really aren't a bother for me as much anymore. But I still feel it when buying monthly passes for the train. And my wife drives around, so there's still some cost.
I've been urging her to slow down, and she says she has been.

don't remember all the details, but it seems like it was a lot bigger issue than just paying taxes for fuel.
