The land of the free, and freedom of speech is under attack. Comedians like Jimmy Kimmel got suspended indefinitely by ABC, Stephen Colbert his 'Late Show' is getting pulled in May and all due to one man: President Donald Trump, who has now set his sight on Jimmy Fallon and uses all his power to get him cancelled by NBC. NPR calls it censorship by proxy.

Because it is natural that these major television stations bow to the current president demands, especially after his new threat to revoke broadcasting licenses if they do not do what he wants. You know like they do in current Russia, North-Korea, China and other countries where freedom of speech is worth nothing. That the FCC has a Pro-Trump chairmen will make this even a very real scenario. Not a far fetched idea.

Painful that Trump his fragile ego can't take a joke and is willing to take such outrageous actions, to stop the mocking. But stopping the support to a regime that is, as we speak, organizing an ethnic cleansing and this for almost two years already. That is something he doesn't want to take actions against. Same as taking actions against Brian Kilmeade who claimed that mentally ill homeless people should get an involuntary lethal injection. He is speaking about 594.000 voiceless people, but luckily not about President Cheeto. Otherwise he would be fired, cancelled or the broadcasting license of his employer could've been revoked!

Don't want to hear about what-about-tisme. But if you see this evolution, is this the new "Greater America?" Where foreign journalists get threaten that such a critical question won't be good for their home country, threatening and getting comedians fired, threatening broadcasters to pull their license...

Poll

Is this how the new greater America, should look?!

You have no idea what actually happened.

I don't either, but I don't think it came from the administration.

Meanwhile in Belgium, a single sheep has come down with a case of listeria, critically threatening the nation’s backbone of cheese exports. We’ll update you as this story develops.

Just read a very good book about Berlin Germany from 1933-1937 (In the Garden of the Beast) pretty scary to see some of the parallels between our two societies.

Trump talking about antifascism being a terrorist designation right in front of the Iwo Jima statue that depicts the American military engaging in antifascist action against fascist imperialist japan in WW2 is a perfect demonstration of how stupid this entire thing is.

How convenient they are blaming Trump for Kimmel being cancelled. His ratings have declined over 50% in the last ten years. In the coveted advertising range of 22-54 year olds it’s decline a staggering 75%.

Disney was just waiting for a reason to kick that turd to the curb.

Colbert show was losing a staggering $40,000,000 a year.

It wasn’t Trump that cancelled Kimmel and Colbert.

Capitalism cancelled them. Both are bad for business. Both had staggering drops in viewers. Both were losing millions of dollars a year.

Good riddance.

I seriously doubt that ABC would succumb to threats from the Trump admin but notice that I didn't say that I seriously doubt that the Trump admin would threaten them.

When you look at who owns Disney/ABC, and what they want to do in the future you can see exactly why they did what they did. It's all about acquisitions that need FCC approval. The story about losing money is just that, a story.

But keep thinking those shows were losing money. Did you know that on paper "Titanic" still hasn't made a profit?

EDIT: Not directed at you Borg, but more a general comment on the thread.

Only the "deciders" at ABC know exactly why they did what they did.  I sure as fuck don't.  And unless they do the highly improbable and put out an honest press release, nobody else does either. Just like anything else in the "news", both teams will drastically over react and put out a bunch of  bullshit. As blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn, somebody may actually be right but it's by accident.

BTW, nothing about this issue is very important unless you are right and it was done to appease the FCC and then only if their threats were not based on actual cause but political pressure from above. Then it's a real problem.

The Land of the Free has been under attack since the moment The Brave became willing to sacrifice their lives to make it The Land of the Free

The quote "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty" rings true.

We’ve been asleep at the wheel for too long. Maybe we’re waking up, but what are we willing to sacrifice?

Our freedom and our liberty is not something that can be given to us. It is up to us, as men and individuals to go out and capture it for ourselves. Freedom is born eternal within us, but never truly wielded or sincerely possessed without sacrifice.

So, I admit freely that I know squat about the entertainment industry but I don't know what you mean by the shows losing money is just a story.

I have seen ratings comparisons and they both lost a huge amount of share. Are you saying that they are still making money, just not as much, or is it something else?

Just trying to understand.

Hi Karl, I'm glad you're back. This place is better with you around for sure.

There hasn't been one studio movie or tv show, variety or scripted, that has ever "turned a profit" on paper. Not one dam thing. The studios bury every single cost and expense imaginable into the profits that are actually generated by 'insert show here'. Pencils, toilet paper, painting buildings, buying new studio vehicles, etc..., none of which were an actual expense the 'insert show here' incurred.

There is a reason the talent that has actual power gets "gross profit participation", because there isn't ever a backend net profit. Ever. Titanic has earned billions of dollars more than it ever cost to make and market, yet it is still in the red according to Fox and Paramount, who share domestic and international revenue.

Kimmel nor Colbert were losing money in reality, but on "paper" they were. ABC/Disney saying otherwise is just them covering their ass in the event of a lawsuit, which I promise you is coming.

Again, if you actually knew the real details and weren't buried in partisan politics you'd know it wasn't the Obama's, or the Clinton's, or even Mickey Mouse, it was Rosanne Barr's tyrannical attitude towards the cast and crew of her show. She was an absolute fucking nightmare to work with and the entire cast protested her involvement and said we are not moving forward with the Rosanne reboot if she stays.

Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner were more than over her shit and fired her, that's how we ended up with a show called "The Connors". I know all of this because my Assistant was deep in that world for many years.
