I am now 6 weeks post total knee. I am at 135 degrees of flex and have been cleared to start riding. The wife and I got out on the dual sports last night and I am realizing I will need more flex for moto.
Curious what stretching other folks might have done to fight for the most mobility post surgery? Or other tricks?
Felt good being on a bike for the first time in about a year.

Lol, im 18 months out, stuck at 115 rom, im riding no problem, not any good regradless, but im still having fun and jumpi g no problem, of course getting in perfect cornering position on the tank aint happening
61yr old.
I heard, Randy Richardson might know something about it.......
Awesome..6 weeks and riding already…I’m still putting my TKR off until the pain becomes unbearable….my last Acl reconstruction, I did all the rehab that Insurance would pay for…. And I worked hard on my own on the off days…my knee was not ready for serious riding….I found a sports specific rehab clinic and paid fir another 20 sessions of strength training and to get more flexibility…it was worth it….
Have you been back for a follow up to address the lack of full range of motion?

DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
Towel slides to get more flexion much like the CPM machine they use right after surgery to get your range of motion back. Are you still going to therapy?
I am. Doing another week just to be safe. They seem reserved just to have me do the exercises at home.
I was going to ask the same. They can do a manipulation to get more ROM.
Do you guys know what type of knee you have?
Im getting my shoulder replaced next Friday, and my left knee later this year. Are some better than other for riding?
PT ev day in the gym, Stretching, Medium weight leg days 2x week (squats, lunge, press, extens, curls, calfs)
Age 57 TKR Dec '23, very difficult first 6 mo's of recovery, second 6 mo's better than first 6 mo's, started riding at 6 months, now 18 mo's post surgery back to normal riding / racing, 125 deg flexion, 0 deg extension.
Dont wait to get TKR, get it now when you are younger and need a good knee / leg.
You got 45°+ more flex then I’ve got now! Thinking I’m due for total knee replacement within the year.
I have a Stryker Triathlon.
I've got a shoulder replacement four weeks ago. 13 Years ago (when I was 22y old) I got a temporary fix but that temporary one had done his job, and now I've a "real one".

yes I have been through 2 different pt places, the surgery and 1st were done at a navy hospital, the 2nd I paid out of pocket, tried a bunch of stuff, best I could get on my own was 115, 118 with assistance. they pretty much said scar tissue was set and would need another surgery to address, the surgeon said he could do that but would not say that he would guarantee any improvement.
I can Mtb and moto with zero pain which is still great, may decide on surgery later?
135 at 6 weeks is excellent. At 5 weeks I was only at 70 and we had to do an MUA (manipulation under anesthesia). Now I’m at 18 weeks and at 135 and -2. This was my 4th surgery on this knee and the doc said I had a lot of scar tissue.
I’ve got a Stryker implant, that’s all Mayo Clinic will use.
Now, the technical challenge with more flex…. The implant occupies space on the back side of the knee that causes the various muscles to not be able to get out of the way during full flex. So flex beyond 135 is not common.
For reference, a functional 120 is considered a successful TKA. 135 is in the top 2% of all TKA outcomes.
Im waiting for a reverse shoulder replacement. 56 years old. Dr is actually not encouraging me to get one as he thinks I'm too young and active. 3 out 4 rotator cuff tendons are tore in half and not fixable. Whats ur situation?
Normally I always say that Dr. talk sh!t when they say that someone is too young for a hip/knee or normal shoulder replacement. But for a reversed shoulder replacement you need to know that is the end of the road. What your muscles and tendons do together will then be done by only your muscles. That will work (after 6 to 12 months rehab), but not as your original mother nature shoulder, so you will lose some range of motion. Off course if the pain is too much you can always push for that replacement. In optimal conditions it will give you 10 to 20 years.
Thanks, this makes me feel a lot better. Right now I’m having trouble getting my foot on the peg when sitting. But that will probably improve as the muscles start getting back up snuff.

I have very little pain. However my range of motion sucks. Sorry to the OP for getting of topic.
No need to be sorry. Hoping you find a path. This knee for me has been a year long ordeal. Living in pain is a nightmare. And shoulders are harder to deal with than knees.
Yes, this early in the recovery, your muscles are well off of what they will be.
My knee is still hot. And I still get healing pain at night that wakes me up at times…. It’s getting better though and I can now climb stairs without pain. Well, at least in the knee that was done. #2 in October is the plan, but I know a lot more about how my body reacted, so I’m hoping it goes better.
For those thinking about TKR look into the Jiffyknee.com. Seems to heal quicker and less damage to muscle and ligaments.
I am going in for knee reconstruction Monday. I am not looking forward to the long recovery, but I will do everything the doctor directs for rehab and PT.
I hope your knee gets full ROM. It sounds like you are doing great so far.
It's been quite a 6 mos period for me: right hip in November, left knee on Jan 20, right knee on April 9. My flexion on the left knee came along pretty well and I'm at 130/0 pretty consistently. The right knee has been more of an issue, possibly as I had a severed hamstring in there that never got repaired. I've got plenty of bend (125 consistently), but struggle to straighten it. The best rehab tool I've been using - bar none - is cycling. First, it was the spinner, and now I've started venturing outdoors again. I mix up eMtb with analog street stuff. After the first knee I tried some "gentle" track stuff on the motorcycle but found the impacts took a toll rather quickly. The bicycle is definitely the best (and most fun) thing I can do for my recovery. I'm out three or four times per week and hope to be most days by mid-June. I'll likely start riding the m/c again around that time. And, by the way, the hip was a non-event compared to the knees.
At 6 months, my hammy was still week, and stuggled with getti g tbe foot on the peg, so i just cruised around to feel the joy
, now even with my limited rom its much easier, just have to fidget to get on the toes, not racing so just finding my own flow.
I had my R replaced back in 2016 at age 58. My surgeon only uses Stryker Triathlon prosthetic, and I read the ROM is 150 degrees. I wasn't able to start PT immediately due to infections picked up in hospital. That resolved after 1 month and started PT. Therapist worked my ROM a lot but was frustrated I only got to 132 degrees. Had follow up with surgeon after released from PT and mentioned the ROM only being 132 instead of 150 like literature claimed. She yelled at me and said do NOT go any further than that 132 or the knee will be moving off the Teflon pad on full flexion! It will be metal on metal at that point. I accepted that and went back to my normal working out regimen. I started riding after DR cleared me and did a gentle 125 VMX race at about 8-10 weeks with no issues. Couple months later I tried to run 2 VMX classes at Glen Helen on 250 & open and didn't even finish practice as my legs were not strong enough. Haven't raced since then but ride forest and single track once in a while here in CO and have had no issues ever.
Now I'm scheduled for my Left knee in July. Found a great surgeon in Durango. She also uses same prosthetic as my Right has. Says people are getting 25-30 years on them now. My 9 yr old R shows no wear and tear at all. She says checkup at 2 weeks to remove stitches and if all healed then start PT. Another check up with her at 6 weeks and could be cleared for full activity if no problems.
Couple other notes- they don't use those motion machines anymore or the circulated ice water rig either as both proved ineffective vs just walking as soon as possible and sticking with it and completing PT ordered. It's likely a same day procedure now too unless late day surgery and they want to monitor overnight. No crutches or walkers needed and no restriction on weight bearing as soon as I can tolerate it.
Good luck to all of you heading for TKA!
