After reading about those arena other deaths the last couple days I get one of those phone calls that scare you.
My grandson (15 y/o back home in Alabama ) had a big get off (for him) at a local track. I'm working in California for another month'ish but I encourage them to ride as often as they can. Today's a holiday, y'all go ride. I'll send money
Turns out he over jumped a big "quad thingy" and flat landed it. Both arms broke both are displaced.
From the ER, mom stated he talking kind funny (plenty of concussion experience with my two sons over the years).
Then mom tells me his helmet is broke in the back. That turned it up several notches. See, I work in the ER (rn) so I've seen plenty of tbi's and brain bleeds. Broken helmet (new astars) and we talking funny and they trying to drug him up with pain meds and dragging ass on the head ct.
I have had a couple times when you sedate someone before their CT (depending on the meds) it may be hard to tell if it's a deteriorating situation or just the meds causing confusing. This can make good consistent neuro checks confusing at best. I understand the pain part but I need a head ct now! Normally I'm cool with this shit but reading the latest tragedies here and knowing I lost my youngest son 4 years ago (27 y/o) and I am 2500 miles from home.
Long story story, head was fine the rest will heal up. Mom will be wiping his ass for awhile. I had to do it with my youngest son for the same reason once before. When you have bi lateral long arm splints someone gotta bath you, feed you, hydrate you, wipe you.
I guess just seeing those other posts freaked me out but then add in what I know (professionally) and have experienced it was a rough couple hours for this old man.
Bruised right shoulder, concussion and bi-lateral displaced forearm fractured.
Not sure why that posted all mixed up like that. I wrote the post then added the pics (which took forever). Thought the pics would be at the bottom, not all mixed up like that. At least it looks screwed up on my end!
That’s rough. I’m glad he’s going to be ok.
He’s very lucky to have such loving, supportive family behind him.
Get well soon! Those calls suck and even more so when you are many miles away.
Glad he’s going to be ok

Damn…..heal up
So! glad to hear your Grandson is going to be alright, he's at that age where he'll heal up pretty fast. Motocross is a tough sport, just make sure he has the best protective gear money can buy to try and minimize injuries the best you can.
Glad he’s going to be ok. That’s a rough one (for all parties involved) Strength and prayers for a fast and full recovery sent.
That’s what sucks about this sport. You want your grandkids to experience how cool it is but it makes me cringe to think about one of mine taking that kind of a hit. Glad your grandson is going to be okay. Hope he heals up quick and his noggin don’t have any after effects.
Glad he's gonna be okay. It's a risk we all take when we put on a helmet.
Heal up kiddo! Never good seeing or knowing someone that’s gone down hard. It messes with you for sure.
Those are the calls that make your heart act funny. Glad it's not worse for him. At 15, he'll heal up.
Glad he’s ok hope he heals up quick!
Hope he gets better soon, of course it's bad, but glad it wasn't worse for the young man 👍
Our condolences for losing your youngest son as well. That's rough.
Yikes! Classic “dinner fork” sign. I’ve done that to both of my wrists….but not at the same time. He has my empathy!….poor guy. That will build character.
