Anyone who has ever turned a lap at Red Bud or Dutch Sport Park knew the Akins.
Copied from Red Buds Facebook page:
With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of the senior member of our family, our bonus dad and RedBud’s longtime referee / stager, Drex Akin.
After their daughter, Lisa, started racing, it wasn’t long before Drex and his late wife, Jane, got involved with District 14. No one was more dedicated to Michigan motocross. The rules and classes of the day came from those trips to Everett High School in Lansing for district meetings back when Magic Johnson was their star player.
Drex knew the rules, classes and 50 years’ worth of riders and their families. He cared enough to do things right, no matter how hard that path was. He was brutally honest and if you didn’t like what he had to say, he’d change your mind by the end of a conversation, because he always got it right.
We don’t know how to have a RedBud without Drex. But we’ll figure it out and take that hard road just like he showed us.
Visitation at Hope Church in Edwardsburg, MI: Thursday, Feb. 6, 4-7pm / Friday, Feb. 7, 11am-1pm with funeral immediately following.

Godspeed Drex. My prayers are extended to Lisa and family as well as the entire RedBud staff/family, and may they feel God's loving arms in this suddenly difficult time.
Godspeed Drex, you will be missed by many
hes such an iconic mx dad in michigan. seen him every weekend at the races for many many years. such a good family. RIP Drex
Staging area corral call up won’t sound the same, that’s for sure. We are all grateful for everything he’s done for Michigan motocross and off road. His voice and inflections calling out names to gate was something all of us who race there were so used to, and I know every one of you can hear it now.
“Vets to staging, vets to staging”
