Bumb Starting e-start bikes

Edited Date/Time 7/16/2018 7:27am
I was riding my 2019 KX450 and stalled it going into a corner and it didn't bump start like my 2016 would. Is this normal for e-start? Makes me think I wouldn't be able to bump start it if the battery dies on the line.

I stall my 2018 YZ450F sometimes and it bump starts just as well as my 2016 did.

I’ve bump started my dual sport a couple of times when the battery was dead. It’s e-start with no kicker

I dont have a “fix” or answer.. but if you stall, just pull the clutch and hit the button. Might be some switch on the estart to get it to fire. Or if its in gear it wont start without the clutch pulled?

I get that part of it, but it’s nice to just have it bump start, not have to pull the clutch and hit the button. It’s a lot easier than kicking it, but still lose time

Yea but if the bump start doesn't take, you're really losing time. You bought a bike with the magic button, use the damn magic button Smile

Yeah a 2019
So how did you get a 2019 unit before they are even at the dealers?

Some drunk must have told you that. I've bump started my KTM a bunch of times.

If you stall it, learn to just pull in the clutch and hit the button. You can make it so you lose little to no time at all.

But what about doing it without hitting the button? just clutch in down a gear then pop the clutch?

Nope nope. Doesn’t work. Kawi even sent out a notice saying how bump starting the bike will hurt the battery and the starter. I tried before getting the notice down one of the hills at Millville. Didn’t work so well haha

I was told to bump start it, you had to push the starter button to activate the fuel pump before it would start. Alex Ray had a starter problem before the second moto at Redbud and couldn't get it bump started and Yamaha told him that. Maybe that only applies to the initial start.

Weird. The fuel pump on KTM’s are energized by any movement of the rear wheel. If I put my bike in gear on a center stand and try to move the back wheel, the fuel pump kicks on.

Alex Ray had his starter button ripped off and they had to start it with a screwdriver on the solenoid to my understanding.

Kind of makes sense... I never once had to bump start my KTM without a charged battery when you stall you just hit the button....

That was another time. It was spinning the starter, but it just would not engage. I don't know what they found, but it sounds like the one-way starter clutch was bad.
