does is matter which side the master link of a chain is facing? in or out from the bike, and is there a backwards or forwards way to put on a chain? oh and one more question, is it bad to have 2 or 3 master links in a chain? ( i had to add 3 links for my 53 tooth sprocket, i commandeered a barely used renthal gold chain off my dad)

The open end of the master link needs to face towards the rear of the bike.

yes closed end towards front sprocket, only extra masterlinks in a emergency! If you have to use all those masterlinks, make sure its adjusted and lubed properly! And keep an eye on the clips.

LOL....one says toward the front the other says toward the back......and you saying this with the chan on top or bottom rotation?

The reality is the open end should be facing the back when the chain is rotating. If its on the wrong way the open end can snag on the chain guide and pop it off.

one person very clearly said open end towards rear, and the next guy said closed end end towards the front sprocket. crayon eater

To simplify, closed end in the direction of rotation.

One says open end to the rear!  The other says closed end to the front, same thing! Both are correct!
