I have been lifting, biking, and running a lot lately and have become tired all the time, someone told me its lack of protien, he said I should take in as many grams as my wieght, 220 gms seems like a ton, anyone else hear this?

Its been over a month and my legs still do not have it, they feel fine and then into the run / bike they give out.

In one month I have lost 20 lbs
I limit myself to 1500 calories ( slip up now and then with vodka, I know I know )
I am 41, 6'2" 225 now, there is no real # I am trying to get to, I just want to feel better.

Any sites that will tell me how many cals a 1 hr run / bike I am burning.

Thanks in advance.

more rest. Lots more.

you'll burn around 200 cals/mile running. Biking is much less.

Of course, everyone is different, but that's about what the tables will say.

got ya...the charts are pretty much a linear formula.

200# person runs 1 mile (at pretty much any pace) and it's about 200 cal/mile.

100# person runs 1 mile and it's about 100 cal/mile

It's all an estimate. There are lots of charts out there for this stuff. Google calories burned and you'll get your choice.

The protein thing is wrong. The number is 1 gram of protein for each kilogram of body weight. Which is roughly around half your body weight.

I would do at least one gram of protein for every two pounds of body weight. If your trying to gain size then you go one gram per pound. Your body needs a day off once in a while to recuperate

A lousy diet could also be the reason for how tired you are. 20 pounds in one month is a bit much.

I need to work on the diet a little more. I was a little surprised at the wieght loss but it has slowed down. I just can not shake being tired all the time.

Yeah, but that's only part of it. Your body burns calories by you just being alive. Working out boosts your metabolism so your body is burning calories on its own more efficiently when you're not working out.

Gotta think positive!

Another good tip is to do a cardio workout in the morning if you can - before you eat anything - at least once a week. Your body will burn off some fat because it needs to find energy.

When I'm working out a lot I eat tons of non-sugar carbs and low fat protein. I don't pay attention to how much or calories and I don't pay attention to how much I'm supposedly burning in workouts. Seems to work for me.

You need more calories. 1500 is too low for someone your size. Ditto what matt said on protein. Protein intake is hyped by the muscle mags to sell product.

You're not resting enough. I know it sounds obvious, but that's probably it. Also, you've only been on this regime for a month right? A month is nothing - it takes your body longer than that to adapt. You need to find a balance between rest and working out. Same thing happened to me before. Try taking more time off then doing your workout - I bet you breeze through it with energy to spare.

Protein, calories, vitamins...most people neglect the vegetables and fruit and get vitamin deficient.

Don't eat enough red meat and it's easy to get anemic with heavy exercise.

True about the vitamins. I don't eat red meat, only poultry, but I take supplements.

You might be right, I am trying to replace drinking with working out, I have two people that are helping. Needless to say I am working my butt off, but still it is 10:20 here and I just got back from a run and i am far from feeling like going to bed.

I think I might be trying to kill two birds with one stone. Anyway if I am not in bed by 11:00 I am going for another run!!

There's no way I could go to bed right after working out and get a good night sleep. I need atleast a few hours to mellow out.

OHHHH...bad news. Hit it in the morning and you'll do much better. Working out at night leads to insominia unless you cool down for several hours.

I think 1500 caleries may be lite for a guy of your size especially if you are hitting it that hard. Try a little more carb intake (not the liquid kind) sounds like you're running on empty.

Your machine needs a new definition of "hard" or else get a calorie counter that works.

Ellipticals are beasts on calorie burning. I do 250 calories in 15 minutes on "moderate" setting, calc'd for my weight of 173lbs.

I think you need to define your goal there. If you just want stamina in your legs for biking, your program is gonna look different maybe than if you just want to all-around feel better.

Feeling tired and run down might be diet-related, but not necessarily lack of proteins.

I'd start by first defining what it is exactly your trying to get out your exercise, then you can tailor your exercise and diet regimen to that.

Mine is for motocross, so stamina and weight (I ride 125s) is the goal, so it's based mostly on cardio and toning specific groups, rather than lifting.

46 yrs...175 lbs.. Boxing workout for one hour - 240 - 440...I can sometimes get it to 550.

Each 15 minute MX practice session.....215.

2 Hour practice session....950, that;s 3 - 15 minute practices - full speed after a 7 minute warm up and 30 minute breaks. I'll pull another 500 cals on the cool down....easy.

A 12 hour race day is silly....like 4800...I'm scanning restaurants on the way home....just want to eat anything.

I agree with the 1500 calories a day being low especially when you're working out hard. I imagine your base caloric requirement is around 2000 and then you have to add some to make up for what you're burning in exercise.

well.. if you are planning for big weight loss and short time, then you are doing things pretty well right now. Stay on 1500, and tough it out another month if you want to break 220. You are going to feel tired, and loose capacity quick cutting weight like that. I am 32 6'2" and 225. depending on the amount of muscle on your frame, your getting close to what should be target for a 41year old guy. The numbers are going to go alot slower from here!

i think morning runs are a great ROI. that is good advice given.

watch the amount of calories you are getting from fat! That is my biggest problem, I should be around 205 right now, if I could run in the mornings and stop eating ice cream 2 days a week!

Why guess? Get a heart rate monitor. there is an optimal range that burns fat, another that builds up your "wind".

you can chart your improvement scientifically.

this is what I use...Polar F-11

20 lb weigh loss in one month is a bunch. As others have mentioned you NEED more calories. You likely need more rest (and a day off per week) and you need to perhaps back off a bit on the amount of exercise so (1 you dont hurt yourself, and 2) so you dont burn out.. You really need to worry about burn out. Find a program you can keep up for the rest of your life or at least for many years.

Being a bit sore however is just part of the game for those that train daily at various sports/exercises

Im not in total agreement with everyone about the 200 cal burn on a 1 mile run. It really depends on how hard you run. And of course ones weight.

The good news: 3500 calories equals a pound. Either weight gain or loss depending on wheather or not you consumed or you burned 3500 cals. And more good news. As you become more fit you will burn more calories at rest than a person who isnt as fit.

Great advice guys. I worked out this morning to see if I feel better. I played tennis for an hour and half. I really have no goals other than getting to 220, what ever the wieght is I lose I keep that amount on a barbell next to the fridge to pick up when I am browsing for food.
My problem is idle hands at night, but I am hoping that working out in the a.m. will make me go to bed easier at night.

I used to really struggle with finding a good work-out program that included diet. I would always over do it and not take in enough calories. Then my step brother (body builder)told me about a book, "Serious Strength Training." It had work-outs on a yearly program depending on what you were looking for. It broke each week down by intensity levels and a chart showing how many calories, protein, carbs and fat each work-out required based on your body weight. It's not exact but it gets you close to your specific target and you can adjust accordingly.

I'm about your size (a few pounds lighter and a few inches taller) and there were some weeks I took in 3500 calories and I felt like I was starving. It's a really good book and I have referred several people to it who didn't want to hire a personal trainer. It was very informative with how your body works and nutricion. Even has info on the pros and cons of legal and illegal substances.
