The Irishman

Anyone catch this yet?

Utterly amazing imo, can't remember enjoying a movie so much in quite some time - like a throwback to the Scorsese classics.

Been on my list of must watch. Saw it’s 3 hours + so haven’t had time to check it out yet. Maybe tomorrow night

I'm a little over an hour into it and so far it's better than I expected it to be.

Just finished watching it. Great movie. Definitely didn't show all the good parts in the trailers.

Massive fan of his other movies so I was looking forward to seeing this.....I wish i hadn't. I couldn't get past the age of the main guys even with the cgi/makeup it was clear, watching a 76 year old guy 'rising through the ranks' just wasn't in any way believable.

Finished it in one sitting. Definitely long, but really nothing was wasted. I can't think of anything that could have been cut and made it better.

Interesting as hell, especially since it's 'based on a true story'. We'll likely never know the full truth, but even this is probably as accurate as anything we've been told.

Worth a watch. I was afraid with all the big names it might come up short, but I think they did a good job with the story.

Liking it so far 30 min in. But I kinda agree they shoulda used young actors for the flashbacks.

Finished it last night and it's a really good flick. As said above, it's long but the detail requires that it be that long. It would've been too condensed had they cut the film down to 2hrs in length.

FYI - I liked Nicholson better as Hoffa.

For all of the hype, it was a big let down in my opinion. There are a few scenes done in slow motion and I had to ask what was the significance of needing to do that. Because there was none other then additional narration causing the three hour run time.

Felt like this movie could have been better had it been made maybe 20 years ago. Perhaps the age of the actors and then trying to make them look young when they still have body movements of 70 year olds. Maybe a different set of actors would have been better. Felt a bit like trying to relive the glory days and well like they say, you can never go home.

I was hoping for something like Goodfellas and Casino and it’s far far from that level.

Overall I’d give it a C. And not something I would likely watch again.

Agree completely. Disappointed for sure. I'd rate a 5 or maybe 6 out of 10.
I just found out that one of the scenes supposedly takes place in my hometown of Fremont, so that makes it a bit cooler for me. haha. There always were rumors of gangsters passing through back in the day due to Fremont's proximity to mafia towns of Cleveland, Youngstown and Detroit.
I should probably watch the last hour or so again. I kept falling asleep and probably missed something.

I think they did a decent job making them look younger, but like TXDirt said, the body movements couldn’t be helped. Watching “young” De Niro kick Joe’s ass down at the grocery store was a bit comical.

I tried. After an hour I turned it off. Dozing on and off for the last 10 minutes. Like others have said, you have to really be in suspension of disbelief mode to stay with it. I'll try again at some point. Not in a hurry.

It isn't a cinematic classic but did showcase some fine acting skills. It kept me engaged and reminded me that, despite current Hollywood trends, a truly bad man may not be a muscled, tattooed, ninja. A gun and a plan.

i watched this last night, huge fan of Casino and Goodfellas.

Irishman was really really good. i was about 2 hours in and hit pause before i realized it was over 3 hours long. it never felt too long. really enjoyed it. the final scene between Frank and Hoffa was kind of breath-taking.

I enjoyed it. It wasn’t Nearly as good as goodfellas or Casino though. The scene where he was boot stomping the store owner for hitting his daughter really showed how old these guys are though lol. I didn’t know a whole bunch about Hoffa other than the average headline over the last couple decades so I kind of wish I’d read the book the movie was based off before watching. I ended up pausing it a few times to look stuff up.

Also, I really liked the length. I would never watch a 3 hour movie in a theatre but with most releasing to Netflix I hope they start producing them with less focus on cutting scenes to save time.

I pointed out to my boys that that scene was more realistic of what a fight really looks like as opposed to the over-choreographed usual fight scenes.....

I can understand being disappointed if one was expecting copies of Casino or Goodfellas. I think that The Irishman was intended to be a bit more like a documentary, without being a full on documentary.

Oh absolutely, but it seemed like “young” De Niro was winded after like 2 kicks, and his movements just seemed a bit stiff, like he has sore joints. Just something I picked up on that reminded me it was an old guy doing the fighting.

Realistic for a 70 year old, yes. Browse YouTube or LiveLeak and you can find plenty of what a "fight really looks like".

Looks like the CGI time-machine can only go so far back....

Finally finished it. I kept dozing off again last night so I finished it this morning and realized why it couldn't keep me awake. It was like watching an aging hall of fame pitcher take the field one too many times.
A much better movie with some similarities is Once Upon a Time in America. You have to see the uncut version though.

Only the "cool" fights are the ones that are going to draw views, but that doesn't represent most of the fights that I've actually seen in person. Most of the ones in person have looked every bit as lame as the one in this movie......

I feel like everything after the restaurant scene just ground the movie to a halt

And no, the old/younger/old DeNiro kicking scene did not look real. Made my hips hurt just watching

I haven't seen it yet but is there something about the fight scene that made them unable to use a younger stand in ? If they can make these guys look younger certainly they could use creative angles and effects to make that possible.

Lol...I can see yall's viewpoint about a stove up old man kicking ass but I've known a few old war vets that knew how to dance. Some fellas just have a little mean in 'm and they know how to use it.

I guess I went into the movie not knowing what it was going to be about, therefore, had no expectations of a Casino or Goodfellas intensity. I liked it but it’ll be hard to watch in its entirety on a lazy, hungover Sunday afternoon.

Agreed. I watched it and it was a decent movie. I can't see watching it like I do Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Lonesome Dove....stuff like that.

Masterpiece of a movie! Growing up a lifelong New Yorker who’s father was a truck driver and chief steward in the teamsters union for 30+, my old man was the real deal with a bookie gig on the side and not some Hollywood made up bullshit. The type of crew that would show up and break your legs if you don’t pay up. That was my dads side hustle to make the motocross thing happen for my brother and me thru the 90’s. That said this movie was amazingly accurate of how these things were and how they can still be now. Side note- At 11 years old In 1994 i was on a picket line with my father in Brooklyn for a grocery store hiring non-union workers “scabs”. Some months later my pic from that day in the picket line alongside my father was blown up and on stage behind jimmy hofffa Jr at a national teamsters union conference.
