You see ... it's an award based on his basketball ability. It's not called the Nice Guy NBA Award. I've never met him ( Ok, maybe I have said hello a few times but I don't know him ) but I can certainly appreciate his sheer athletic ability. The NBA would be a lot less fun to watch without him.

I think he was awarded the MVP on his career body of work. Jordan had a "gimme the ball" mentality but in a way that made everyone around him better. Kobe has the "gimme the ball" mentality in a way that makes his teammates expendable.
Chris Paul can take over a game as well (anyone watch game 2 against the Spurs last night?), but makes everyone on the floor better while doing it. I like Kobe and can ignore the off-court stuff, but I'd much rather watch someone score 21 and dish off 12 assists than watch someone score 30.

Well, I think the whole MVP thing is so fuzzy. The NBA should publish the exact criteria they use to award it. I've had this argument at work a lot lately. How do you measure or quantify the quality of being "valuable"?

You can't just say without so and so the team would be nothng because you would have SOMEONE in that person's place and you'll never know how the team would have fared with the new guy vs the old guy. Just too many variables and unknown factors. Also, I could start on a team of midgets and claim I am the MVP of the league.

The only thing that's easy to quantify are stats ... and to a lesser degree sheer athletic ability. And I agree ... Kobe is benefiting from getting left off all these years. Maybe a little make-up call involved but he has earned it.

The Lakers were questionable of even making the playoffs this year. Instead they topped the toughest division in a decade. His scoring has actually come down a little as he has increased his assists. His defense has always been great.

I almost wish they would just change it to an award based on all around ability on offense and defense. There would be less arguing.
