I'm a Honda guy. When I raced in the 80's Honda was the best brand and team. Now it seems like the bikes won't start and the riders, well they seem like great guys, but they are not the fastest guys out there. I wonder if Honda thinks they will sell more bikes by having riders that are well liked as opposed to being the fastest? Maybe they do. I know my kids stand in the Honda line for autographs. But when you have to bump start your bike on the line or fall over and get lapped twice before you can get your bike restarted it looks badUnsure

Honda's won't start or restart?

Honda is still the best brand bike, they just aren't chasing the top few guys right now.

Sounds like you are blaming your setup issues on a manufacturer? Unless you are talking about Josh Grant at budds, which was an isolated incident.

Bump start on the line? If you can't start a bike, you really shouldn't be racing one!!!

Fall over and get lapped twice before restarting? WOW, Ya REALLY shouldn't be racing!!

Get an electric start bike. That way, you can still race while putting everyone else in danger...

Motocross is about having the best rider, period, at least these days since all bikes are close.

I will venture to say why I think honda is missing out, but it is purely a theory.

For quite some time, kawi has had the best "farm" system around. They have the most exposure and arguably the best bikes at an amateur level with their team green program.

By supporting promising up and comers as far back as 65's and 85's, they seem to develop a relationship that lasts into the beginning stages of the "next big dude's" career.

AKA carmicheal, aka stewart aka villopoto, stroupe.....etc...

Those kids have been team green a long time.

Now it is Dean Wilson and Adam Cincurillo and Blake Bagget in their upcoming wings.

It also doesn't hurt kawi to have the "best" lites team in the world with mitch payton. While I truly feel all the teams have caught up to his team this year, in the past, he has always had the best equipment and a "program" that works, like or hate it.

That means coming out of amateur ranks, even if your were a suzuki support rider or honda support rider coming up, if Mitch offered you a ride, it would be hard to say no.

That, to me, is why honda is not winning today, because their farm system is not as good, if they even have one comparable team green at all (which I feel they don't)

Honda is like the Yankee's, the most money but not winning anymore because they lost their roots, the up and coming.

That said, others must have caught on to kawi's method, because Factory Connection has stepped into the amateur support program, and in their first year of implementation, it has already won them a championship with canard. I expect Barcia to win too when he turns pro.

That's my two cents.

Honda sells more 250F's and 450F's than any other mcf every year. Winning races no longer translates into bike sales. Stewart and Villipoto have been my favorite riders for the past 3 years and every year I buy a new Honda.

Honda has the reputation of having the best made best all around bike out there. When you have that, you don't need the best rider on your team. Besides, Honda has had all of the greatest riders on the team aside from Reed and Stewart.

I'm not sure how much assistance Honda Of Houston is getting but at 1 time they had a pretty large effort at the National Amatuer events. One thing you have failed to mention is Honda has stopped doing mini's and I think the smallest thing they have is the CRF150.

honda of houston is still huge...I am from texas and they support tons of riders....

But team green seems to nab the best of that bunch. Only conclusion I can come to is Honda of Houston doesn't give the same level support that team green seems to.

Either way, you have to admit that Team Green has had their paws on everyone of the latest and greatest, with RC, JS, RV, and the excellant bunch of riders they have coming up now.

Don't forget, before Factory Connection stole canard, he rode green too....

Sales figures don't lie, people want Hondas. They are an incredible bike and that's why you see tracks flooded with them.

I think it's pretty doubtful to assume that they would sell more units if their factory teams were dominating like in the past as compared to now. While I think the team puts in the same effort as ever, I don't think they are prepared to pay though the nose for a dominant rider like Stewart. Especially when it isn't going to have much of an impact on their bottom line.

Not as much money or they didn't want to do SX only or did L&M offer the same amount of money for SX only?

The reason Honda sells so well is because of people like flynbrian. Honda has people dedicated to them from their glory days of 80' and early 90's.
I know quite a few people who have been out of MX for years and when they get back in it, all they want is Honda.

they hold a much larger market share than any other brand, I think I saw they have 50 percent of the market, yamaha has 25 percent, and the rest is kawi and suzuki.

it was quite astounding really....but I bet their xr market really boosts their stats.

It isn't all about having the fastest rider to them. A couple of years ago I got a tour of their racing facility by one of the head guys - awesome to say the least. Anyway, they have a video room where they meet after tne races, review old footage, etc. I made a remark about probably watching a lot of JMB. He said no, that they were more interested in riders that had the whole package & came across well to the fans. At the time, they were hoping Millsaps would be that person.

Those damn kawi's do seem to win about everything though. I'm on my 4th Honda now in a row. I wonder if I would be faster on a Kawi or another bike but these day's it seems there all set up pretty much identical anyway and I always do suspension on all of them so the stock suspension doesn't matter much to me. I just wonder if ergonomics wise I would feel better on another brand but I don't know because I haven't ridden any.

I'm not putting Kehoe down but look at his teams records to back in the day when Roger ran things. I do realize that they do have to toe the line and the bean counters tell them what they can do and what they can spend but Roger must have the same issues.

I was going to to say that as well. Honda runs deep in the big boy class.
